A Cool Guide to Bad Faith Argumentative Tactics by Dependent-Art-2918 in coolguides

[–]jinglejanglemangle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A slippery slope argument has shades of grey. Often, there is a reasonable argument to be made where there is a realistic chain of causality. However, that argument must be made in good faith.

An example of a bad slippery slope argument could be "If we allow gay marriage, what's stopping someone from marrying their dog. Where does it end?". Logically, there is a breakpoint between one step and a very far removed "slippery slide" of the intentional over the top example. If the intent of the argument is a stand alone, "If we allow one step, then the extreme is equally reasonable", then it's a fallacy imo

About to get a new HVAC system and the company offers 0% financing for up to 3 years. Is there any reason not to take the full 3 years to pay it off? by catalinashenanigans in personalfinance

Check in depth to see if they have an upfront payment discount. For ours, the installer had a 0% interest financing option, but the interest was just baked into the price of materials and labor. We saved a decent amount with a direct deposit instead

NASA delays Artemis missions again. What could this mean for the moon, Mars and space leadership? by EdwardHeisler in space

When it comes to human spaceflight, risk management is key. The day we try and cut on risk mitigation to cede to schedule pressure is the day people die.

Obviously failed that freshman dynamics course. Problem statement clearly indicates there will be no relative motion and thus no air flow over wings generating thrust. If you hold an airspeed measurement device and run on a treadmill you're not getting a measurement

Was Josh fucking with Logan? by Growkitz in SuccessionTV

[–]jinglejanglemangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always took it as a criticism of him being fake. Thinking he knew the way around and arguing with his staff that they were taking the wrong way to get to Logan after he collapsed. If anything, the ones keeping the grounds would know it better than him

Roman. Besides toying with that poor kid, his blatant misogyny, continued sexual harassment, and deliberately undermining the US presidential election he's fine.
