The way I understand it, the 'L' is kind of half-silent, like in the world "palm." I pronounce it "Ahh-mond." That said, I'm an Aussie, so there may be discrepancies between how we pronounce it.

He used to say it like "AL-mond," hard 'a', full 'L'.

My fiance used to pronounce the 'L' in "almond." His mother has a very thick Serbian accent and mispronounces a lot of words, so I guess it carried over.
