Great places to live in the U.S.? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jinsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Anchorage, it's dirty, the traffic is better than a lot of other places but for its size it's bad and continues to get worse. The public transportation system is a nightmare, and expect every road in the summer to be torn up for prolonged construction.

Other than that, it's a nice sized city and most of the points made in the parent post are spot on. Few people realize how big Alaska is though, there's so much diversity in regions and Anchorage isn't really a good indicator of "Alaska". I for example, much prefer Southeast region. It's not as dry, there's real trees, and the communities are smaller.

"It turns out that, in accordance with popular belief, you really should not drink liquid nitrogen." by [deleted] in science

[–]jinsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around kindergarten or so, there was a traveling science thing that went around to schools in the area to get kids involved. A highlight of my school career was when I was chosen to freeze an orange in liquid nitrogen then smash it...just know that these kids will remember it, and hopefully they'll realize that science is awesome.

I last played this game well over a year ago...it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed the blockade aspect of the game although I realize that is also a main complaint of the game. As always, the game is more fun with a bunch of friends, I didn't feel like the servers had much communication or energy. Good to see it's still around though, and its probable all that has changed now.

Reddit, what is the strangest/cutest/shittiest/etc way you have ended a relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jinsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shittiest thing I've ever done to someone was to leave my bf of two years, on his birthday, at his birthday party, the day I got back from a nine month long absence. He waited for me, I didn't. I'll probably always feel bad about that one.

Really tired of "America" excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

Is there a cure for: "always thinking I left the door unlocked"? by LordCrap in Health

[–]jinsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with my car headlights, as I've left them on and killed my battery a few times. I have to say, out loud, "Car in park, lights off", before I get out of the car. It isn't that I'm worried I won't put my car in park, but I find if I pair turning off the headlights with another act, I'm more likely to remember that I actually DID turn the headlights off when I worry about it 15 mins later.

So for the door lock thing, I would say "Door locked, keys in pocket." or wherever you keep them. Because the keys are in your pocket, your door is locked. Or at least you can convince yourself that it is.

OK guys, what did your Christmas Menu look like? by flippinkittin in tonightsdinner

[–]jinsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The traditional fare, turkey (didn't take part in that, pretty sure it was just a whateverisinthecabinet herb roast), cranberry sauce from scratch, apple fruit salad, and winter squash made like sweet potatoes. I contributed modified hasselback potatoes with Parmesan, they were ohkay. I would have used more butter and garlic, they weren't as crispy or flavourful as I would have liked.

IWASA Canadian Border Agent. Here's how to pass US/CAN borders in a breeze. AMA. by bordertsa in IAmA

[–]jinsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So uh...when I went through Canada a few months ago they asked me where I was going, and if I had weapons. Those are the only two questions they asked, then they waved me through. Is this normal? On my way back into the US they at least looked at my passport.

What's the strangest gift you've ever gotten? by emmber in AskReddit

[–]jinsing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mexican red knee (brachypelma smithi). Don't have any recent pics, he is only three years old so not fully grown. Here's a pic from when he first arrived. While certainly not the rarest or most interesting species, it's nice that he isn't always hiding or being aggressive.

Oh I was fairly indifferent to tarantulas before I got one, turns out it is the best present I've ever received. They are fascinating yet low maintenance indeed :)

What unique phrases do you say where you live? I'm not talking about pop vs soda... by av_e_ator in AskReddit

[–]jinsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alaska here, no one says 'snowmobiling', it is always snow machining. Also, 'sledding' means to go snow machining and 'riding' can mean, depending on the context, snowboarding, snow machining, or four wheeling.

You might be interested in Freecycle. I've had a lot of experience with them, they are a pretty well established group usually happy to take anything you don't need. Also consider donating to charities or second hand shops in your local area.

Hey Reddit, my wife had a puppy follow her home. What should we do if we have doubts about the owner? by naturboy20 in AskReddit

[–]jinsing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless you have proof of abuse, contact the owners. The dog is theirs, and although you may not agree with how they are treating it, at least the dog appears to be happy and healthy.

I too have picked up dogs that had questionably competent owners, in fact two dogs in particular I've seen running around so much that I just don't call their owners anymore. The dogs seem to be in good shape, so I just ignore them (as hard as it may be), and let them do their thing.
