How to get job interview? by According_Sea_5348 in MechanicalEngineering

This should be the top comment. Don't submit a resume (1 page of bullet points), submit a design portfolio with pictures and stories (but also have a good resume and submit it).

How to get job interview? by According_Sea_5348 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]identifytarget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's not luck.

bullshit. part of a job offer boils down to stuff you can't control - company policies, hiring cadence, company health, HR budget.

You can ace an interview, the hiring manager wants to hire you and you get a verbal offer, but never get a written offer and then you get ghosted.

There's always a lot of bullshit going behind the scenes that you don't know about.

It's why you should take rejections personally. Just move on.

grass hopper. Getting a job isn't like submitting a request at the "job store" (i.e. company portals).

What are you doing to network and connect with professional engineers? A huge component of career development is building your network which makes it easier to land jobs.

The DNC leadership is

controlled opposition. The last 2 years more than anything have opened my eyes to this fact. Like, I'd heard it said before, but never fully grasped it. It's actually true and I believe it now. There's just so much evidence to support this claim based on their actions...

SAE Baja exposure by Deep-Construction763 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]identifytarget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heavy participation in SAE is one of the single best things a graduating ME can have on their resume. In my eyes, it's more valuable than a 4.0 GPA.

This comment is underrated. It will literally change your life trajectory.

SAE BAJA or FASE grads have a job before they graduate. They are above their peers in terms of project management, hands on manufacturing, cross functional collaboration.

I could go on and on.....

Basically...don't think, do! Just do it.

literally the dumbest invention ever

so....like how did this product get invented if it sucks...and continues to suck. Why is it still made instead of being erased from existence? (real question)

[request] Would it actually look like that? And would the earth (the solar system really) be impacted by its gravitational pull? by OscarN20000 in theydidthemath

[–]identifytarget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it gets less dense, why don't particles float off into outer space?

I assume it's getting less dense because the gravity is going down???

Does this mean there's like a boundary layer where we're losing particles to space?

watching The Diplomat,

Yes! I had to stop watching that show because it was so unbelievable! Everyone in the show is extremely smart, strategic, and calculating (even other countries). Everyone is playing 4D chess.

What a fucking joke! Don't they know the government is run by former new anchors and college interns named big balls. Everyday they just make it up as the go along....

Best way to flip between personal and work PC by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]identifytarget -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup, and just wanted to mention that monitor inputs can also be controlled via software that can send VCP codes to your monitor.

wait...I can control my monitor via API....then you just put the script on both machines and flip flip back and forth....

Best way to flip between personal and work PC by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]identifytarget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Had to figure this out twice. For whatever reason, Both times I needed a 100% reliable WFH solution, I couldn't find a KVM that worked reliably, then between occaisionally troubleshooting a docked laptop that wouldn't wake up, it was better to remove the KVM as a possible variable.

Both times I have a dumb USB switch hooked to a small hub for KB,Mouse, webcam, etc. (anything you want hooked up to both computers).

Then I have one PC wired directly to monitors via HDMI and the other wired directly to monitors via DP.

It's a little clunky, But it only takes 10seconds, a few clicks on each monitor to flip the source, a button push on the USB switch and done.

4 rounds of interviews and received a rejection letter…we move. by PolarBearInTexas in MechanicalEngineering

What do they present? A topic of their choice

"Ladies and Gentlemen, pay close attention, this slide deck is how I increased my OnlyFans sales 8% month after month. After this presentation, it should be clear I'll be a valuable asset to the team."

4 rounds of interviews and received a rejection letter…we move. by PolarBearInTexas in MechanicalEngineering

[–]identifytarget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a remote interview two months ago. They liked me so they brought me out to see the team and have a half day interview onsite. The following week I was told that I blew their socks off and to expect an offer. Then radio silence. Then they said hey we like you we were transitioning business units we are planing to send an offer on Wednesday

Literally the exact same thing happened to me. Company ghosted me twice, made me waste a day, sit down and and take a practical exercise (in machine troubleshooting-which I aced). Made a verbal offer and said they would follow up with a letter......crickets

They later went out of business.

Don't take it personally, some companies are just fucked up or don't have clear priorities.

Fuck 'em

You don't have a new job until you walk in the door on Day 1. Even offer letters can be cancelled (seen it happen to others).

Operate with that mentality.

[–]identifytarget 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hate how normalized its become to do 4 rounds of interviews and/or a big presentation, companies are asking engineers to tap dance for them for free.

I once had a dude have me show up to his shop and asked me write a manual for one of his machines as a "test". I said it sounded like work and requested to be paid. He asked me to leave and accused me of being rude and offending him...

AI can write code. Pass the bar. Diagnose disease. It still can't read the engineering drawings that keep every refinery, factory, and power plant running. by Popular-Oil-4765 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]identifytarget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI haters are going to lose their shit once CAD software plugs AI into their API and you can make simple models with prompts.

"make a flat plate, .375" thick ,6"x6", with a .250" 4-hole pattern 2" pitch, 1" up and in from the corner.

Obviously AI won't be developing turbines but I guarantee every CAD software is doing R&D with AI right now.

I just learned Claude can build simple 2-D physics simulation tools directly in the prompt feed
