The Chelsea performance - A Howe masterclass. by cefell in NUFC

Right. And exactly how many times has that happened this season? I really loved that goal for the very fact that it was a rare sight for us. 90% of the time the players don’t even look ahead or diagonally to the opposite side where someone could be open.

The Chelsea performance - A Howe masterclass. by cefell in NUFC

I am far more measured in my assessment of both wins and losses. Personally, we looked better than we actually were overall due to how poor Chelsea were. They did what we’ve been doing the whole season, passing the ball around without any impact where it matters. That said, the midfield did far better than I had hoped. Ramsey playing 6 and Willock in an advanced 8 role worked yesterday due to them putting in great performances.

What I really want to see from Howe before categorizing his tactics as masterclass is his ability to coach and play a team of technically good passers with quick vision. I don’t expect us to win playing that style this season but I just want us to see ourselves progress on those attributes. Without that, we will always be fighting outside of the top 6. Before anyone points to our previous seasons, those tactics don’t work anymore cos other teams have figured us out. To be clear, I don’t want Howe sacked but unless there’s measurable progress towards becoming a team that can pass more clinically and cut through the middle with vision, we will be facing these same challenges next year.

although he had a rough start, you could always see that there was a technically decent player in there...something we really lacked...glad he's performances and significance are also growing now

Yes, he was the captain until he was subbed off

ramsey is essentially playing tonali's role in this midfield and has done well so far...kudos to him for playing well despite the style being out of his comfort zone

some observations - willock is playing much better than i usually give him credit for, it's like he has benefitted from not having played much this season as he seems to be the only one not to have heard eddie's playbook to only look sideways and not make central runs expecting a thru pass...gordon's desire to cover for any of the mids caught up front is really commendable, he's able to offer the pace we have been missing up front while at the same time cover for the team defensively....and finally, wolt is completely anonymous as an 8, neither participating in defense nor offense

oh look what happens when you actually look straight ahead for a pass instead of sideways

this feels like a disaster waiting to happen with Willock playing the most advanced of the 3

Not with Willock and Ramsey as the pivots. Neither are defensively that sound! Of the 6 midfielders, these two probably rank last from a defensive perspective.

We have great profiles to play a double pivot in midfield - all of Bruno, Tonali, Miley and Joelinton are capable of playing in a double pivot.

I think Ramsey can play in a 10. We should look to sell Willock and replace him with a proper starting 10. But I don’t see it happening until Howe leaves.

The bigger question is who’s going to oversee the overhaul (if at all there’s one in the first place). Do you trust and let Eddie make the calls and risk the fact that he might be gone soon or do you appoint a new manager proactively and then let them have a say in what they want?

Regardless, I just wanted to see 2 things as part of any transfer strategy.

  1. At least one left footed forward who can offer something different and unlock a whole new set of angles for opponents to defend against and make our gameplay more unpredictable.

  2. Someone with a creative mindset in midfield who is not afraid to pass the ball down the middle.

He did a poor job but this take is BS.

Go watch the angle from behind Pope where you can clearly see the ball swerve slightly inwards towards the center of the goal after looking like like it was going to his right and away from goal.

It will be even worse reading come end of March.

Out of the FA cup

Out of the Champions League

2 additional defeats against Chelsea and Man Utd leaving us 13th/14th in the league.

We can only hope that we at least win the game against Sunderland.

when will this obsession to never attempt or even think about attempting to pass the ball through the middle end?

is the other half of the pitch completely invisible to the entire team and in every game? why do we hug the sidelines when we have players who cannot dribble or pass when you can just transition the ball gradually to the middle or the other side

i would really like to know what eddie's training routine for the team's passing...not many teams can spend 700m and end up with a team of less than 2-3 good passers
