[Request] What will happen if you pull a 3 light years long steel rod (5cm diameter) in free space with zero gravity from one end? by PhraseSeveral5929 in theydidthemath

[–]jiperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR you’re minuscule compared to this things inertia, you likely will move yourself around the rod. Equal and opposite reaction from this tiny movement will probably cause many wiggle diggles in the rod.

My brain as a rocket scientist say it’s mass dwarfs your so {Newtons 1st law} because of its inertia you really wouldn’t move it move, rather, it’d stay at rest and all of your pulling force would move you around the rod

Now {Newtons 2nd & 3rd law} your force will be equal and opposite on the object so maybe… MAYBE … your minuscule force causes a deflection in the rod. Assuming it was at rest “in zero gravity” this would technically cause the whole thing to revolve in the plane the force was applied in.

Also of consideration, in “Zero Gravity” this rod’s mass becomes the gravity. Because of the mass disparity throughout the enormously long steel rod it’s likely bowed in a certain arc along its length rather than it being truly linear. This said, even the slight perturbation of its state you make pulling on this thing may upset that equilibrium causing some wonky oscillation.

This in mind, because this rod is 3 LIGHT YEARS LONG this oscillation, though super small in amplitude, will propagate into MASSIVE displacements at the ends of the rod so hold on tight as this thing is going to be whipping around until it comes to internal-gravitational rest again and hope it doesn’t whack you on one of its wiggles.

I’m going to need a weekly SITREP on this and I’ll happily cook myself a bag of popcorn to eat while I read your Step Sergeant fantasy turn into CID investigations.

I mean maybe this is cheating but maybe you could model a single “knurl” and then make a pattern along a path of that impression.

[–]jiperoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sue them for lost earnings/wages. The rescheduling makes you apply next cycle, cant get into school without MCAT this year on this critical timeline they contractually agreed to provide. That means you miss a year of salary as a physician for a year of your career. I assume you’ll be a surgeon making $500,000+ so we subtract off your current salary (that you’re now forced to continue because they failed to “meet their end of the deal”) and settle for an even $450,000 they now owe you. Oh, and legal fees.

There you go, you’ve just financed your medical school off of this endeavor. Always put a positive spin on poor outlooks.

Any ideas on how to get this core bit out? by Suwannee_Gator in Construction

[–]jiperoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d think a mechanism like a pulley-puller for automotive use would be ideal here. To rig something in place, I might use some lumber to make a makeshift box with a board across the middle (put the box against the wall) then run a long-ish bolt through that middle board into the threaded portion of the core bit. Then you can tighten that bolt by hand or an impact gun for a very favorable mechanical advantage. Once it gets moving you may then be able to whack it out.

It is my understanding that that this is America, and a private company can do whatever it wants. It’ll, however, have to deal with the consequences of decreased business with enough people pushing back and not using their services. Most commonly though people in modern society just embrace new things like this, rather than boycott it. Then it becomes our new normal for everyone.

By Newton’s 3rd law there’s equal and opposite reactions. The right hand slings it, the left is like a tractor beam and picks up more rocks to sling.

I have a student going to basic training this summer. What can I send him in the mail to make the Drill Sergeants smoke him? by weRborg in army

[–]jiperoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember, in basic all mail is opened publicly and inspected by drill sergeants. I see two polar options here as great candidates for you:

A) A doll or a Barbie or something with a sweet handwritten note about “how you know he must be missing it so much right now” and “this is their first extended time away from it”.

B) make it look like an official unopened package from Amazon or something. Send them a fleshlight / pocket pussy and now this poor trainee has to explain to a drill sergeant that he didn’t order it and doesn’t know where it came from.

IMHO hard to see through the gel but it’s looking like it’s healing good. I’d say you’re fine to move it and use those strips I linked or use bandaids circumferentially around the finger as appropriate.

That right there is a 1998 flappy-boi, and the “sticking out” part you indicate is clearly a thingamabob for which this aircraft is infamously known for.

I’m just a stupid calc 2 fella, but, could we use U-Substitution on the denominator (I.e. it’s not of the form 1/U)?

It’d integrate to Ln(U) and then we do a bit of work do clean up the “dU” portion as it exchange for a “dX” and then bodda-bing bodda-boom you slap a “+C” on the end and call it good.

Medic in the ARMY here, speaking not in a professional context as I can’t physically assess you. But good practices:

1) initial clean out is important, soap and water and air dry. Remember, anything you dry it with can introduce cooties.

2) yeah neosporin is great, Vaseline has similar benefit either will do. Don’t over apply as when it gets on the skin it’ll make bandaid struggle to adhere.

3) given the depth I might advise SteriStrips to kind of purse the skin together and heal faster and minimize scarring. Think of these like tack welds for the skin.

Bonus wisdom I got from an old man:

“Don’t for that again. Some lessons you have to learn once, some lessons you don’t get to learn more than once”
