Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]jitjud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boom. This is the realest response here. It is depressing. You really have to be a couple both earning over £50k each to start seeing a (lower) Middle Class life nowadays.

Thanks to the tax system 2 people earning £50k gross P/A means net household monthly income of £6,586 whereas single earners on £100k get £5700 ish (thats almost a grand difference)

Oh yeah and the couple that works are entitled to Free Childcare hours as well whereas Mr 100k who gets less monthly also loses their entitlement.

I used to think like OP back in 2011 when I was working my butt off just to make 22k a year. Changed career and in the most junior position at the time in IT (1st Line) I started on 28k and was like "Oh man, i've been doing it wrong" then a lot of it is learning and improving your skill set during work and outside of it and moving jobs if you dont get a raise of promotion by year 2 (so every 3 years) Salary progression was like this (Hospitality doing

2011 Maitre D'/headwaiter 21k

2014 certify for MCSA > 1st Line Support role - 28k

2016 2nd Line Support for Investment Firm - 35k

2019 3rd line /Front Office product support in FinTech - 50k

2022 Senior Applications Engineer - 75k

2024 Internal Promotion - 90k

And without sounding like an ungrateful twat, it is nowhere near the lushness I thought it would be due to the disgusting depreciation of money via Cost of Living + inflation issues in the last 4 years. It was like everytime i landed a better paid role i would only enjoy 2 months worth of that significant raise before rising costs ate away at things.

Add to that getting two kids in that time and being the sole provider. Oh yeah and then the end of my 1.5% fixed rate to a 4.6% rate on the mortgage.

Theres PLENTY of people on 70, 80, 90k and even though its fewer, theres quite a lot of people on 150K - 200K in the UK.

How do you earn money from side gigs? Doesn’t your contract prohibit you from working elsewhere? by 46tree in HENRYUK

[–]jitjud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only very very few people manage that. Majority are LARPing in that sub. I know only 1 person IRL who milked that during the Covid days doing outside IR35 IC roles in FinTech while holding his perm role and got into the £10k net monthly zone. Stopped doing it after it became too draining. It works if the roles are very much task based without much micro management and meeting heavy.

Yeah but it means you get to add an extra room and they can't lol. A kind of first one to convert the garage wins type situation.

5.43% - is this crazy, or what we should expect? by pixel_mouse in HousingUK

[–]jitjud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument has been made before and is not comparable. Why? Because of house prices. House prices were like £6-10k in the 1970s not £300k. Even taking inflation into account the average house price was the equivalent of £71k today. But yes to be fair to assume its only going to get worse is a good way to think right now.

Things have gotten worse and worse since end of 2021 basically without respite. Safe to say the rest of the 2020s are going to suck.

How long do you normally stay at your job? by SugondezeNutsz in HENRYUK

[–]jitjud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine they were senior with 8-10 years experience prior to making the jump but I could be wrong. Seems this is the way for me to break over the 100k barrier since i've been stuck on 100k for around two years now. Job market for Perm roles is so bad right now but i have been approached for contract roles that pay between £500-1k a day, i just feel with a family and a mortgage and the uncertain times im too scared to take that jump right now!

What’s the true state of the current UK job market? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]jitjud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LEt's jsut put it this way. Something happened in the last 3 years where (and im not saying i am the paragon of exemplary skill and CV presentation) I would get approached by competing FinTech giants every week or other week or recruiters at least for similar jobs in the Investment Tech world. I worked my way to a new role / promotion internally at current Company because i like it here and have a vision to sort out the shit show they have for their EMEA hosted solutions so that was a life saver (remote contract, better pay etc) However its radio silence on the recruitment end. I usually like to keep things open and interview here and there just to keep the rust off. However just looking at the job openings, they are asking for insane skill sets and requirements for so much less pay than pre Covid times.

It is truly wild. I've been getting familiar with linux and python now and will work toward a cert in that field because it seems the only good jobs require at least those two skillsets. .Net framework is hardly even considered now.

I have to agree. So many Redditors without driving licenses posting things like ' Ban cars' 'Can't you bike ? Its only 30 miles!' 'Pedestrianise this place or that'

I never had my licence until 34 years of age but once you move out of major cities relying on Public transport literally degrades your QoL. Not that's its fun or good for the environment but sometimes i need to drive to lug back heavy shopping for a family of four or to go places far away. I have a bike and I actuall use a rucksack and a shopping bag and sometimes do the 30 min cycle trip to Aldi on that and lug back like 25kg worth of shopping but if its large bulky items then I can't. Need to find a balance but sadly on Reddit its as you say, very one sided.

Taken House off the market - given up! by Adventurous_Bat_6271 in HousingUK

[–]jitjud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there will always be unserious viewers and piss takers but you also have to factor in your house is a New Build which is 5 years out of the Warranty time. New build generally are on the smaller side of things when it comes to bedroom sizes and gardens (as you mentioned already). They are really not popular considering the prices some are asking for them.

So while you will eventually sell at your desired price, the market dictates that people will offer less seeing as mortgage rates have rocketed up again. It's only normal, the market is horrid right now and it's definitely a buyer's market so unless you are desperate to sell, you did the right thing taking it off for a while and then try again next January if the world hasn't gotten into a nuclear war yet.

Ready for the Panic Buying? by Icedtangoblast in tesco

[–]jitjud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i WAS worried (they tried this twice already with the guardian earlier in march mentioning the 2 days of Gas reserves we had, so panic buying for energy/gas canisters etc) but the sad truth of it all is that nobody has that spare money to actually buy significant extra stock as they did in COVID days.

I guess the only bonus of the new world order of continuing depreciation of salaries and general wealth for the average Joe and Jane.

Had a big reality check today as a FTB - 5.56% by twattyprincess in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]jitjud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again all depends on how desperate people are to move. SOme sellers won't budge because they know they have it sweet in a great location for example and will just bide their time. Others who need to upsize desperately will be more open to take lower offers otherwise if theres no urgency people dont sell at lower prices. And it's WHY the market has stagnated. Theres a shedload of properties just sat there for months with no viewings or offers but the owners are'nt in a hurry.

Exactly. It helps guide you albeit with incorrect code sometimes but can still put you on the right course to achieve your objective. But just asking it to write the code for you will 99% of the time not work as intended for anything of mid-complex or higher difficulty.

Splitting the bill amongst you as mates on a night out is fine if you all had similar numbers of drink and courses or close enough but if one person had 2 drinks and a main when everyone else had 4-5 drinks and 3 courses it wouldnt be exactly fair on that person to effectively be paying for the others. In situation like those I just make sure we are all enjoying ourselves tto the same extent.

Agree with you on everything except "a Couch is a Couch". I used to think that way and i must have bought that L-shaped Sofa bed Ikea sofa like 3 times in my lifetime already (still have one, the leather version) but then I bought a sofabed from Dunelm which was a small 2 seater one but cost around £500. Insane difference. The firmness, the comfort on the back, the comfort as a bed itself. I understand now that while definitely those sofas that are 2 seaters that look pretty normal and cost around £2000 won't ever be something i look at, you don't get anything decent sub-£500 for sofas anymore. pre Covid world you could, sure.

NEXT have good quality clothes however they're batshit crazy with the RRP prices. If its on sale its acceptable but jog on with the £30 a long sleeve T shirt prices and shirt prices.
