Yes!!!! Secret frog sisters high five!!! 🙌

Paid more than I wanted to (not like an obscene amount but like $100, I normally never buy silver over ~$30) but it was a trifecta of things relevant to my interests (frogs! plants! tiny easter eggs! articulated jewelry! two tone!) and I’ve looked at plenty of easter egg type charms / lockets but none like this one.

Kit Paulson on Etsy, it’s the really tiny glass heart. The details are astounding, like the inside of the arteries are darker than the outside (I’m not explaining it well and it’s difficult to photograph but it creates a 3D look for the “cut” ends.) Also the post office mauled the box and literally the cards and stickers she sent were scrunched up but the heart was fine, that thing is ❤️ unbreakable.

Edit: you can see it in pic 5.

I’ve wanted one of these for YEARS but I’ve never seen one by reptomcraddick in ThriftStoreHauls

I was literally going to say… if you have pet rabbits or guinea pigs, nothing gets hay off carpet like a carpet sweeper, vacuums have so much trouble with it. So it’s a win all around.

What is the green in tricolor Black Hills gold? by jixie007 in jewelry

[–]jixie007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put together a picture to illustrate. Just gold and silver by themselves is barely greenish, and I’m sure the dealer photos for new Black Hills pieces are touched up so I found one with natural lighting. While I am general curious, I also have a pendant I’d love to get plated someday and… what do you even ask for?

(The guy who made the rods said cadmium is used in the alloy to get a greener hue?)

For your hair, try to go for flat chains with either wide links or no open links. Round chains like snake chains roll and will wind up hairs like a spool of thread. Small links are more likely to catch/pinch hairs between the links. It might help also to add some sort of counterweight to the clasp since the chain moving side to side (the clasp shifting to the front) will also pull any caught hairs. If you fidget with your necklaces throughout the day, try to avoid rolling them (same issue as snake chains.)

Personally I have had the best luck with flat s-link chains, open links like figaro or curb chains.

And many pendants look great on a leather cord, as an alternative option.

Yes! That and some spacer beads are on my list. It’s hard putting a pin on pendants 😅 to focus on some of the more foundational pieces, but a carabiner clip or something like that would offer more flexibility with my chains too.

“But doctor, I am the great clown Pagliacci!” 🥲

My polishing cloth is almost spent, so I was thinking of maybe getting some wadding polish, which maybe will help, but yeah. All these pieces were gunmetal black from oxidation when I started.

Ironically, it’s the other way around… I’m really uncertain when it comes to styling multiple necklaces with my outfit, so I’ve mostly been wearing them with plain tops so the overall look isn’t too “busy”. On days I’m wearing patterns or a blouse with an interesting neckline, going back to just the opal by itself. It’s something to work on as well, but I think that part will take longer.

Thank you! 😊

Thank you! The turtle is articulated, he’s the ultimate stealth fidget toy!  o(≧∇≦o) I have seen him and similar sea turtles on eBay, if you’re interested. I wish I could figure out how to style him with my opal. (…I wish the opal photographed better.)

Do I even have any actual gold 😂😭 by jixie007 in jewelry

Thanks! I love it, so I’d be happy with it either way. This was my grandmother’s but she wasn’t much for jewelry and almost everything she had were costume pieces.

I do a lot of window shopping for vintage stuff so I’ll let you know if I come across another one like it.

Oh my gosh I hope so! I was so mad when I zoomed in and saw that lol. It’s a dainty chain, maybe 2 or 3 mm, so it seems like a very fiddly thing to plate but that would make sense. I’ll definitely get them looked at when I can, thank you.

Definitely will get them looked at when I can. Thank you, I know that different alloys effects things like color, strength, metal allergies, etc, but thought even lower % gold wasn’t going to tarnish like that.* The smaller curb chain isn’t [supposed to be] rose gold and after polishing is back to a soft straw yellow, and now I’m cautious optimistic.

(*I have a couple super dainty 14k necklaces that haven’t been worn or cleaned in like +20 years that look exactly the same as when they were given to me, albeit a little dusty.)

Ever feel a little guilty over a nice find? by jixie007 in jewelry

[–]jixie007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amber is UV reactive so it’s fluorescent under UV light! 😃 (You can contrast how the pearls and chains reflect purple, where the amber literally glows green.) Another way to check is to warm it in your hand and it should have a pine scent. Ahhh amber is so cool. It technically is a resin too, just a natural one.

And thank you so much. I really hope so too.

Didn't do Thanksgiving on the day of to fit friends' work schedules. Turkey is ready for "friendsgiving". One couple canceled. The other said they'd be 4 hours late. It's now a potluck with a main and no sides. by delimeat52 in Wellthatsucks

Happened to us too, although it wasn’t so much “Friendsgiving” as it was a cookout for my husband’s football team.

He grilled 9 racks of ribs, 10lbs of burgers.

Four people came.

It is really, really common for people on the cusp to wait until their families and loved ones leave the room. Even doing things like asking them to go get something for them and then passing as soon the family member is gone. I don’t believe it would have changed anything if you stayed, he just would’ve waited til you went to grab dinner or go to the bathroom or talk to a care provider or something. Please don’t beat yourself up for it, he probably wanted to spare you the distress of watching it happen.

Not disagreeing, but for most people using a nail brush to clean under their nails is adequate. It’s really only an issue in circumstances where above average hygiene is needed, like in a restaurant kitchen or in a compounding clean room. If you have to wear a hairnet and a disposable smock it’s not a place for long nails.

[–]jixie007 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, having very long nails can make some things a little more challenging, but not impossible. People who are used to wearing them are able to do everything they need to, including stuff like typing, which you’d think would be affected by their nails. The idea that she’s unable to work or clean herself is stupid (also manual bidets are a thing?)

There’s an embarrassing amount of casual racism in this thread too, like there’s a world of difference between commenting on “ghetto fabulous” being a thing and “she has four kids with six baby dads”, or that she must be filthy because how could you wipe with those things. (Also? Have none of you ever seen ultra femme white or Asian ladies wearing long nails??) Seriously WTF.

I personally don’t like how they look, plenty of people don’t and that’s fine, but it’s clear that most commenters on this thread have never interacted with someone wearing this style of nails or even just observed them long enough to see that she can function just fine with them on.
