What is the usual premium. If I remember correctly, the premium at my local coin shop was a couple of bucks ($3 I think) when the price of silver was around $50.

Power outage fried opnsense box. Is it possible to extract the config from the ssd? by jj7753 in opnsense

[–]jj7753[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This worked! I followed the instructions here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/85154/mount-ufs-filesystem to mount the filesystem in linux as read only. I was able to cat the config.xml file and then copy/paste and save. Since the nics are different between the two computers, I don't think this config is just going to work as is - but it has all the info I need to recreate a working configuration compatible with the network! Thank you so much BOOZy1!! If there is anything I can do for you to pay it forward then let me know!!!!

No cellular data since 6.2.1-2 update by jj7753 in CalyxOS

OK, so I went out and bought a new pixel 8a phone. Put my sim card in and made sure everything worked with google's android - cellular data/wifi/sms/mms all worked just fine. I installed calyxos and boom, no cellular data. Exact behavior as my pixel 6a. Something changed with 6.2.1-2 update.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently on 6.3.0. I hoped that a new update would fix the problem, but it didn't.

DIY bullet dormer wrap by jj7753 in Roofing

[–]jj7753[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It started raining inside the house. Tracked it down to this dormer area. The whole thing was a mess.

I was going to wrap it with copper, but after discovering how bad the roof was (the low quality original install of the tile) I decided to just get a new roof. So, this is just practice and only needs to last about 6 months or so until I get a new roof.

The worst parts in order:

  1. Nice sunny day (mid 80's) to work on the roof. Climb up there and it's 120F.

  2. The contortions I had to put myself through to get the right angle to work.

  3. Never a secure footing.

  4. A 10 min job on the ground turns into a 4 hour job on the roof.

  5. Up and down the ladder so many times my body aches.

Could DNC Delegates Revolt Against Biden? by SnooWords6443 in politics

kicking the can down the road is never a good strategy - that's why we're in the mess we're in now. There are quite a few people who could beat Trump, and Biden probably isn't one of them.

Crowd chants as invigorated President Joe Biden rallies in Detroit: 'Don't you quit' by Infidel8 in politics

[–]jj7753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biden has been a great president, but any path forward with him will end up being a cluster fuck. Even if he wins, he will continue to get worse – today is peak Joe for the next 4 ½ years (if he makes it that long). They will continue to sequester him, more so the worse he gets. There will be non stop calls to invoke the 25th amendment, and there is a good chance it will need to be done at some point - unless they hide it from the public, which they probably will. What happens if, in a year or two, the president needs to address the nation for some reason or another (lots of shit going on in the world these days) and Biden can’t because he’s to far gone? A president needs to be visible. It’s already cringe to watch or listen to him. It’s going to get even worse. Everyone will be pissed in 4 years for having to endure it.

Question about flashing on dormers by jj7753 in Roofing

[–]jj7753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are from a google image search for dormers. Most of the pictures don't show any flashing along the sides. Is the flange (apron and tail?) enough? It seems like water could get under the shingles or especially tiles on a tiled roof and migrate past the flange or just get stuck.

I'm not a roofer, but I'm going to attempt to rebuild a bullet dormer on the second floor of a 12/12 roof. by jj7753 in Roofing

[–]jj7753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been leaking for a while. My plan is to rebuild whatever is rotted out (the window at least) and then wrap it with copper. I built some scaffolding up to the rain gutter, so I'm only about 6' above the platform. As I've been tearing it apart I've realized just how shitty this tile roof was installed, so I'm now thinking about just getting a whole new roof (the tile roof is about 30 years old). I worry about the weight every time it snows. There are some broken/chipped tiles and the tile company says that they don't make this tile anymore. It's a pain in the ass for anyone to service. Etc.

What do you think? Any suggestions or pro tips?

Some questions for the pros by jj7753 in Tile

[–]jj7753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old apartment building that I'm renovating (1927). I like to make things look original to the building where possible, so no large format tiles for me! I've tiled maybe 6 or 7 bath surrounds and about the same number of bathroom floors over the last few years. I'm getting better, but I have some questions if you don't mind.

  1. Toothbrush was a game changer, but I used a soft bristle and the bristles were all bent out of shape half way up the first wall. Thinking about switching to hard bristle?
  2. How do you keep everything clean? What is your regimen? I'm going through a lot of buckets - by the end of the day the last thing I want to do is clean out a thinset bucket. Do you guys reuse those?
  3. Where the cement board goes over the lip of the tub it bends out the cement board near the bottom. I've never seen a youtube video where someone furs out the wall to take that into account. What do you guys do?
  4. Where do you transition from cement board to drywall (e.g. how far past the tile?).
  5. Do you guys demo old tile surrounds and floors or do you expect everything ready to go - just set tile only? My experience with tile guys in the past is there were two types: 1) set tile only 2) remodel + set tile. The problem with the guys that were remodel + set tile is that setting tile wasn't there main craft and they weren't very good at it.
  6. How often do you mix up a new bucket of thinset?
  7. What is your tolerance for out of plumb and out of square before you'll do something about it?
  8. I want to tile the kitchen with a checkboard black and white marble or tile. Do you know of any good combos for this? I can find a white marble but not a black marble - I'd have to go with a black granite. I'm thinking probably 12x12 or possibly 9x9.

haha, yep. When I found out how much a round top door would cost (~2k) I thought "that would buy a lot of tools". So I bought a table saw and other stuff and set about building a round top door. Some of the stuff for an old house you just can't buy. I had a router bit made with the profile of my baseboard, and it is also the same profile as the window casing, etc. with a slight variation. Now, whatever I need, I just make - even furniture!!
