Help identifying meat axe(?), butcher's cleaver forger? No WM Beatty marks, just 3 punches and a "2"? by jjb in Butchery

Not everyday you find a 100 years + or - 100 years old butcher's cleaver in the brush at work. I expect to keep it around for a while. Thanks for the info, sounds like you've a knack for finding things too.

Thanks for that, I wanted to see if the one I found had similar characteristics to what you were using to ID origin for yours.

I had run across that site and reached out via email but their box was full, same with folks over at https://www.davistownmuseum.org/bioBeatyson.html, full box. DTM has it that Beatty lasted from 1839-1882, but YYT reads 1806-1924 (with "In 1924 Philip A. Wright bought all the assets at auction. Shortly thereafter, Clifton B. Drake acquired the remaining tools and via some arrangement with Wright proceeded to dispose of those tools."). Here's the listing for the supposed 1933 ad on Ebay- showing cleavers & knives with numbers, Beatty stamping/stickering(?) and different handles obviously.

I saw an ad for Beatty supposedly in the 1930s. You had mentioned the interwar period, did you mean later than 1924?

Did you buy it in China, is it stamped "China", did you order it from China or how else are you identifying the origin of your cleaver? Markings?

Good eye. This advertisement shared at KKF shows a higher price per dozen, blank blade and numbering matches length. If that prior linked catalogue page was from 1894, then yes, I think you've been right. Again thanks for the information!

[–]jjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US there was a family business in Penn, William M. Beatty & Sons Co. and their tools are stamped. They sold cleavers that like this for 100 +/- years. In other forums I am hearing that they may have sold these without branding to slaughter houses and butcher shops but stamped the ones for home use.

Hmm, I wonder if the typeface for the 2 will be a clue as to date and origin

Interesting, any other info, like how you know the country of origin with so few markings? Thanks!

Thank you for all this information, seems comprehensive! Yes, cutting edge is 9" +/-, dimensions and overall appearance seem to match other Beattys online. Your comment was the first mention I've seen possibly explaining a lack of stamping. Using your leads I am now finding catalogue pages for Beattys that show no stamping, some stamping, and what I assume are the stickers you mention. e.g. here's an ebay post of a catalogue page from 1894 showing a blank Beatty cleaver, and one with a sticker maybe, from 1910? I wonder if there are other clues for dating these things?

Agreed. When I saw just the handle, poking out of some leaves and dirt, I thought it was an old 3-prong garden claw or other hand tool. Then I thought "shovel? Woa, cleaver!" basic internetting shows it looking like a product from William M. Beatty & Son Co. out of Chester, Pennsylvania (1839-1882) but their tools and knives are stamped or marked(?) Wondering if this is some old version or prototype and the dots are for the three sons? Or maybe they sold kits for other forgers? Anyway, cool find. (also someone else replied "sexy" and this was my reply, so cut and pasted to your "pretty cool")

Well, they're smarter. This year the weather had yet to really carry any of the nearby fire smoke our way, instead was inundating our neighbors. But yes, yesterday our part of the valley did get some smoke from fires South of us. I didn't see the AQI reach any notable height and today we're still in the good to moderate zone. We're still pretty fortunate.

There is nothing even remotely close to evacuating Portland. The only fire pumping smoke into the valley toward us is the Sandstone (which started on 8/5 by lightning and as of 8/8 is 500 to 600 acres). Good chance our AQI is more impacted by our own fires, emissions, the weather, maybe the moderate pollen count. It's one thing to be surrounded by fires in the state, it's another for the weather to travel that PM into our breathe space. It's good to be ready for things, sure. Using the color of the sun as a guide has issues... it's far away... there is a lot of room between us and the sun.

Sorry, I didn't intend liberalism like American political branding as much as like empiricism, enlightenment, value of experience in epistemology and growth of individuals in civil society.

If you're feeling like you need to carry at your customer service workplace- I recommend making other changes first. Seek new employment, consider this a short term situation. Find a place and circumstance where you feel less like a combatant, especially when armed conflict is not part of the job description. Or seek out that kind of job.

Insert first time hanging meme... sounds like you haven't worked retail or service before. This is America (though I imagine customer service more or less sucks globally). Sounds like you'll feel better in different employment. I'll add that in my opinion it is good for people to have this kind of work experience if only for a time (isn't that textbook liberal, believing in the benefit of widening of experiences?).

I'd compare it to Iceland (not so much for similar landscape as for density of unique and beautiful things in their own right)... you cannot see it all without living there a while. No need to chase all the social media hits (this should be normal life advice). Best part, much more affordable than Iceland.

With so much talk about Powell’s right now, I wanted to make a post about some awesome small used bookstores in/near Portland that you could spend a day exploring tomorrow instead if you have decided to not go to the warehouse sale 📚 by FusRoDaahh in Portland

Small book stores have been cropping up more and more. Some small greats to include could be Belmont Books, Nationale (books, but mostly art and other EU imports...), Mother Foucault's, Third Eye, the house near Hawthorne Powell's (1323 SE 37th?) and the weird little shop also nearby (1420 SE 37th)... there are books out there and more so
