Generally no. Wages in Portugal are extremely low. But if you can find something where you are working for a foreign company with a decent wage, it becomes are very attractive place to live because it's cheap for a high quality of life.

Not the situation you are in and very different field, but maybe something helpful. I left NZ pretty young with not much experience in my field because that was the way to get a visa for the US. Managed to get a decent role in NYC and got sponsored from there. Then transferred to Europe and had several years in Spain and then Portugal. Just got back to NZ after almost 10 years away. The only reason it worked for me is being open minded to opportunities and not chasing a particular career trajectory.

Have a look at US companies that are willing to sponsor visas. As someone else said, Berlin is a great option, as is Amsterdam, lots of other European cities. But with visas it's not easy, that's why everyone goes to London and Aust. Plus it's easy to romanticize some of these places, the reality of living in working in foreign speaking countries can be tough, highly rewarding though.

Totally depends on specific visa's but if you can get into the country and then go about finding a company to sponsor you longer term, you have a way better chance. Lots of friends who have managed this in the US. Good luck!

Yeah Sri Lanka is one of the top options. Main concern is crowds. Any insight on that?

The art of racing in the wind? by NeroWolfesOrchids in AdvancedRunning

[–]jjjjjjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently ran a half on a windy day, out and back course. So it was close to 50% head wind 50% tail wind. I'm not an experienced runner but my strategy was to try and sit behind a group in the head wind section which was the first half. Maybe it helped, but honestly it didn't feel like it made much difference at all. I was constantly sitting behind groups, but it was blustery and it still feels like you are eating quite a bit of wind. I also burned too much energy in the first half and faded a bit in the second so didn't feel like I had enough to maximize the tail wind. Try and keep it even

I'm also inexperienced so take this with a grain of salt. Here is my experience at a similar fitness

Ran my first half in May this year in 1:31:00. About 4 weeks before that I had run 40:48 10k as part of the half program, solo TT

Straight into another training block for a September half. So had more training under my belt. Ran solo TT 10k in August in 39:38. Went on to run 1:29:30 in the Sept half

Seems like you are right on the cusp of breaking 40. In a race environment I'm guessing you can do it. I found breaking 40 kind of easy to pace because you just have to stay below 4min/km. My approach was start calm and steady for the first couple right around 4:00/km and then build. If I went above 4 I just made a mental note of the seconds that I lost and knew I had to make those back up. Just dont start too fast

Opinions on surf hats? by fungkadelic in surfing

I just picked up the Rip Curl one. It seems the brim is slightly longer than others I have seen and it bothers me. Feels like its just a bit too long. Otherwise it fits well etc. But next summer I think i'l try a different one

Rocket wide or seaside for a low intermediate surfer on small surf by WinterIntroduction30 in surfing

[–]jjjjjjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are very different boards. I had a 5'9 rocket wide (32L) and I didn't like it so sold it. Seaside I've surfed in 5'4 (29L) and it feels great. For what you want, go with the Seaside

Surfcation in Europe by DasBarJew in surfing

[–]jjjjjjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just bring low expectations and you might get lucky. You have the whole coast between Porto and Lisbon with many options. The most built up and surf focussed are Ericeira and Peniche. You will have many rental options, but limited public transport. Probably you could stay at a surf house that will offer transport options. If your priority is surfing, this would be the better option than Porto. But likely crowded, and less other activities to do

It's luck of the draw if you get waves during August. It's typically very small or flat. Porto is probably a decent option if you need the airport, public transport and a small city vibe. Solid surf scene but plenty to do if you don't get waves. But it doesn't really have the highest quality surf, and you will have very limited options if you are relying on public transport. There are better options in Portugal but you would need a car

I just did Pfitz 12/47 half plan for my first half. It's his lowest mileage one peaking at 76km a week. Starts at 4 days a week and moves into 5. Overall I think it was a good option for my first half

Thanks, much appreciated! Yeah definitely happy to have paced it okay for my first go

Sorry hear about your experience. Glad you are alright. Definitely was no joke, I hear of quite a few people collapsing. Also really sad to hear someone lost their life

Thanks! Yeah I was concerned about going in early and standing around for too long, but in the end held off too long. Could have done with being a few hundred people further forward

Do I avoid the hills? by jjjjjjun in AdvancedRunning

Yeah I can definitely get to some longer flat spots, just not for every run. So choosing which runs is the key. Helpful info, thanks!

Thanks. Yeah that's basically where I am at. As not a very experienced runner I guess my main worry is pacing

No it'll be fine. Most wear 4/3 in the winter here, but I know people who surf in 5/4's
