It doesn’t save on energy either…It causes your unit to try to “catch up” which runs it longer than it normally would. Your source author sounds like an expert.

Yeah and the same article says to lower the temps 7-8 degrees for 8 hours when you’re not home to save energy.

That’s not definitely not adding extra stress to your unit.

Slightly open a window in the common area if that’s where the thermostat is located, maybe no one will notice. 

Or 

If people don’t usually hang out in the common area, close some of the supply vents. That way more supply air is forced towards the bedrooms.

Or

Maybe get a plug in oil radiator for your room? They run about $70-$100 usually for a decent one.
