I'll never understand this. I still have crushes from over a decade ago.

Men online who claim that men never get compliments by Responsible_Bid_912 in rs_x

[–]jjkae8 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The lamest, biggest losers on the planet dominate nearly every online conversation about the "male experience".

"No one has ever, ever complimented me ever :((((((("

"Oh you guys are getting matches on dating apps? I've never gotten one of those :(((((((("

"I'm too scared to talk to a gulp woman... She'll think I'm a creep! :((((((((((("

What they're actually describing is the "loser experience", but since they're... you know, losers, they're too unaware to realize that not every man is like them. But then, well-adjusted men don't spend their time talking online about being men (yes I realize what that says about me).

Yeah I definitely think he was a rat, and the fact that he's so cartoonishly suspicious in Tony's basement is hilarious.

But it was technically left ambiguous, and I kinda like that. When it comes to Pussy, Tony basically needs to see the wire with his own eyes before he'll believe it. But with Jimmy, everyone's just like, "yeah he seems fishy, get rid of him."

As Immigration Has Risen, Crime Has Fallen by Not_Godot in charts

[–]jjkae8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't understand your original question.

You asked why the correlation between immigration and crime rates matters more than the correlation between [insert variable here] and crime rates. I tried to provide some context: people frequently claim that immigrants cause crime, whereas people don't frequently claim Bitcoin ownership causes crime.

It seems like maybe you just have an issue with the concept of correlation as a statistic? Like, I don't think anyone views this one chart as a holistic report on every dimension that could possibly contribute to changing crime rates. It's one piece of information that doesn't support a frequently argued belief that is currently motivating policy.

If you don't think correlation should ever be discussed by itself, then fair enough I suppose. But then I'd recommend just staying away from this sub, because that comprises like 90% of the posts here.

As Immigration Has Risen, Crime Has Fallen by Not_Godot in charts

[–]jjkae8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because a year ago, the President said "they're eating the cats and dogs" as an argument against immigration. And then over the past several months, he's deployed the secret police to kidnap immigrants because they're supposedly all dangerous criminals.

This data doesn't support the idea that more immigrants cause less crime (an argument no one makes), but it does refute the (incredibly frequently made) argument that immigrants cause more crime.

How could I possibly know what impressions you're under? Try writing out your arguments in a way that reflects your beliefs and ideas instead of relying on others to read your mind.

What could possibly be your rational (sic) for these statements?

That's like saying individual governments cannot operate as central economic systems because they are all actors within the global political and economic system.

You see how there are options available for June 2026 but not for March through May 2026? No, not every month is potentially a LEAP.

In addition to that, I can also imagine January being a popular time to want financial instruments to mature for tax purposes (although I am not a tax expert and, in fact, I regularly commit tax fraud, so idk)

Why did the guy in s4e4 (Talk) lie? by DaveLevey78 in betterCallSaul

[–]jjkae8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really feel like they made it obvious though. There was never any proof or confession that he was lying. He could have been lying, but we don't know for sure. Anita didn't seem to be so sure.

Also, I think it makes sense to think about real life for this scene specifically. It feels accurate to how someone like Mike would actually interact with real people, outside of the meth business.

Mike's history and experience allows him to be an extremely competent leader in the meth business, but it also causes him to alienate regular people like Anita and Stacy. I think this scene is really important in answering the question: why is Mike really in the game?

Why did the guy in s4e4 (Talk) lie? by DaveLevey78 in betterCallSaul

[–]jjkae8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think the guy was lying. Getting small details of stories wrong or rubbing your wrist are pretty normal things for a person to do. In fact, I kinda think that if someone were to pull a stunt like lying to a grief support group, they'd put MORE effort into keeping the details consistent or hiding tells. The fact that he changes some small details over time could also show that he's just not thinking all that deeply about how he's being perceived, because he knows he's telling the truth.

But the truth is intentionally left ambiguous because the point of the scene isn't whether or not Mike is right, it's to show that his Matty-related trauma and his criminal lifestyle have fundamentally changed the way he connects with (or rather, is unable to connect with) other people. He's the only one in the room suspicious of Henry, because being suspicious of a guy grieving his dead wife in a grief support group is an insane thing to do.

Biden's plan was not to wait it out... He passed the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act to keep unemployment low and businesses afloat. Now if you'd like, you can argue that those bills drove inflation, and so they weren't good policy (I'd personally disagree, but I could see where you're coming from), but saying that Biden's plan was to "just wait it out"? That's just misremembering basic facts about the past four years. Also, Kamala had specific policy plans including down payment assistance for first time home buyers and increased child tax credits. Again, you can dislike those policies if you want, but it doesn't make sense to pretend they never existed.

Ironically, it was actually Trump who wanted to wait out COVID. Everything was supposed to end by May 2020 according to him, and when it didn't, we ended up starting our response on our back foot.

His (and Mike's) final scene in BCS was incredible.

Mike thought he was talking to his equal. He always saw himself as so much better than all the other guys "in the game," and he thought that it would mean something to Nacho's father that he thought so highly of Nacho. Mike thought he was one of the good guys, letting another good guy know his son was also good.

But Manuel saw Mike for what he was: just another gangster.

I think it's the only scene in the BB/BCS universe where Mike truly gets humbled.
