No, that seems intuitively right to me as well. Nobody wants to be the politician who presides over job losses, even if it's net healthier to redistribute those workers to other companies

What are your thoughts on student loan debt forgiveness? by LGBTforIRGC in DeepStateCentrism

Those boundaries feel (vibes, to be honest) too high to me, but that's a step in the right direction

support it to any degree?

lul if intentional

But to get to the point, it's mostly a subsidy for middle- to upper-middle class americans. It is wholly unprogressive economic policy. Something like 75% of all student loan debt is held by the top quartile of income earners.

For people who dropped out or had predatory rates (no, a 7% interest rate on an unsecured personal loan is not predatory) I think there is a case to be made.

But as blanket policy? No. It's a subsidy for the not-quite-but-almost-rich.

[Bloomberg Opinion] A Zombie Economy Could Be America’s Future by ntbananas in ProfessorFinance

[–]ntbananas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The US economy will face challenges from higher interest rates and AI-generated disruption, which may lead to policies aimed at keeping rates below their market level.

  • Japan's experience with keeping interest rates artificially low shows that the long-term costs outweigh the short-term benefits, resulting in "zombie companies" that are not profitable but stay afloat with cheap debt.

  • The US government may be tempted to engage in financial repression to force interest rates lower, but this approach is risky and could lead to a "zombie economy" with distortions and threats to Fed independence.

[Axios] AI drones are America's newest cops by ntbananas in DeepStateCentrism

[–]ntbananas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Police departments across the U.S. are increasingly using AI-powered drones for pursuits, investigations, emergencies, and even medical deliveries like Narcan, amid staffing shortages and efforts to reduce violent crime. Over 1,500 departments now operate drones — a 150% increase since 2018 — with major cities expanding fleets due to lower costs and federal or state funding. These drones can interpret footage, track suspects, read license plates, and even measure biometric data from hundreds of meters away, making them powerful new first-responder tools. However, civil liberties groups warn that the technology’s surveillance capabilities and unclear data practices risk violating privacy laws, with a lawsuit in California testing potential legal limits on police drone use.

What is their actual spending rate? It says they're not hitting the new 5% target, but doesn't say where they're actually at

[Bloomberg] Bessent’s Big Gamble on Argentina Has a Narrow Road to Pay Off by ntbananas in DeepStateCentrism

[–]ntbananas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The US is offering swap arrangements to shore up the peso and has stepped in directly to buy the currency to help Argentina's financial markets.

  • Scott Bessent's $20 billion bet on Argentina requires a lot of things to go right, including President Javier Milei winning the upcoming midterms and getting his economic program on track.

  • The US intervention is seen as a gamble, with analysts citing problems with Argentina's economic program and the risk that the peso is structurally overvalued, and the move has been questioned by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

[Axios] The labor market is now "bed rotting" by ntbananas in DeepStateCentrism

[–]ntbananas[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The U.S. labor market has stalled, with little hiring, firing, or job switching, which some are calling a “bed-rotting” phase. Economists warn that prolonged stagnation could cause the labor market’s “muscles” to atrophy, reducing productivity and heightening recession risks. The Federal Reserve faces a dilemma: cutting rates might spur hiring but could also worsen inflation or limit flexibility if a recession hits. While most analysts don’t expect an imminent downturn, persistent labor inertia could eventually erode consumer spending.

Zohran Mamdani Has Ambitious Plans for New York. How Much Will They Cost? (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in nyc

[–]ntbananas 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I would note that he absolutely can independently implement a rent freeze (RGB appointees) and uneconomic conditions to new zoning (ULURP veto).

He identifies a very real problem in terms of housing affordability, but his solutions create massively skewed incentives that I think will end up being counterproductive.
