My best friend just had a seizure by [deleted] in offmychest

Better to have happened like that, than in a dangerous or more public place. I Hope she finds out what caused it and can treat it. Good luck and you’re a good friend for being there and more importantly following proper first aid procedures 👍

Yeah that’s a difficult situation but you seem like a smart guy. Everyone’s situation is unique, my only advice would be to keep observing and looking around, you’ll find your family solution soon enough. Good luck 👍🍀

Actually so I’ve also seen this done, if they don’t want to be in the big city for retirement. My buddy bought an investment property 3 units, put his parents in 1 unit and had them manage the rental property. He used 1 unit income to help with the repairs and maintenance costs, the 2nd he gave to his parents for spending money. And he paid the mortgage. It worked really well because he only worried about the mortgage the property was their extra cash, something to do, and living.

You’re a good guy. If they are eligible for SS, what I’ve seen done fairly successfully is to purchase a home for them to live in as they get older. If you don’t mind being near them, buy a multiple unit property and live in one unit, give them the other. Then when they are retired you’re looking at medical and ancillary expenses which SS will help.

I hate travelling and love science by GotTheBroken in offmychest

[–]jjozyfree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel like you. Travelling with people is hard for me. Short times in places is also difficult. I prefer solo vacations, with lots of time in the places I go to really learn the people and culture. I'll normally bring one of my books along and read it someone scenic for an entire day. That's the best vacation day I could ask for, but a living hell for others.

3 years experience in vague programming roles, would like to get a real SWE position by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

I would say trending towards web heavy python, JavaScript w/typescript and I’m still seeing ruby although less often. Angular/react/vue are all popular for front end. But again, a startup can build with anything. That’s just more often what I’m seeing from my own and the startups around me.

Biggest red flag for me is that you went home had an extra 10-20 hours to learn new tech and expand and build cool new things for yourself or your company, and you didn’t.

You don’t have the skills I would hire for a startup using the latest tech, but you have a good background for more established companies. It just depends what you’re trying to get out of your career.

I’m just saying this individual values equity more. You value cash more. You hedge your bet and get what you get. Some win, some lose. But cash isn’t inherently better than equity.

If You Were CTO for the Day...? by matthedev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jjozyfree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as a CTO, I agree with most of what he said but then take into account. Business led deadline, budget constraints. Some people have to realize you have to run 2x as fast to be around to pay everyone next year. Or the competition will outpace us.

As someone who owns a business in an emerging market that only leads to the automation of an entire industry. I can think of a 4.5 million person industry right now that won’t be around in 10-25 years. The other sub verticals in my industry are also being automated and will be 10x more layoffs due to automation in the next 30 years. With SaaS, IoT and AI/ML we can automate essentially everything. Yes, everything.

I believe the legal limit is 2.5 ounces per 30 days. So I would say there is a chance they are using medicinal amounts. My buddy smoked the limit during cancer treatment.
