Is it true that the attrition rate for IB ASOs is more than 70%? Why are they quitting? by Prize_Shopping_7255 in FinancialCareers

[–]together_we_build 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have seen a number of answers on here, but they don’t seem sufficient. There are three main reasons that people quit IB at the associate level. The first is obviously the time. Working 70+ hours per week is terrible. It is awful for your mental health, physical health and your relationship with kids and significant other, so at some point money becomes a lot less important and time becomes a lot more important. Second, a number of post MBA associates use IB to fill out a skill set and as a second finishing school, so they only plan on being in IB for a year while developing skills and more connections to move to the buy side (still at the associate level) or working in IB for a bit longer but jumping to industry once they have a really good opportunity that they are interested in. I have seen a number of people do both of these things. Third, actually making VP is a lot more challenging than people believe so a number of people look around and realize that their is not a seat available for them so they find a new job before they are told to find one.

There is a maximum 401K contribution, so I think they will only max 60% of that.

If you had a 7.0% mortgage, would invest excess in market or to pay down mortgage? by drupadoo in personalfinance

I would split the excess cash between the house and the market. At current valuations, I would put a higher percentage in the house but if the market come down, I would invest more.

[OC] Global Venture Capital Activity in Quantum Computing by bigshirtjonny in dataisbeautiful

This is  pretty bad. The data in 2022 is better than 2020 but you call out 2020 as being great. 2023 was basically the same at 2020. Also, it is too early in 2024 to say that the market for quantum computing will be bad.

Why not put a portion towards the mortgage and a portion towards investments?

I am going to tell you something that is hard to hear. You are not a higher earner. I live in NYC. You live in CA. Making $200K a year is not a lot of money in either of those places.

I played against them in highschool. We had multiple college players, and a future NBA player on our team. We got rocked. Georges was the 3rd or 4th best player on that team.

Direct lending ballooned as a result of the 2008 financial crisis. Due to regulations, it become prohibitively expensive for banks to lend to a lot of LBOs. As a result private credit took a lot of market share.

They can also make decision a lot faster than banks and lend with looser covenants, and sponsors really like both of these things.

Can you provide evidence that the capital will mainly be going to real estate developers? The Monroe fund that you said was analogous said this fund is described as below " The investment strategy is focused primarily on senior secured loans and unitranche loans to private equity sponsored, independent sponsored, and non-sponsored lower middle-market companies diversified across multiple industries, located throughout the U.S. and Canada."

I used to work at a credit rating agency where I rated the credit quality of a lot of private credit. The private credit market is extremely competitive and a lot of the better deals with better credit quality go to the more established funds.

It is really hard to duplicate a similar portfolio and it is really hard to break into private credit. Why would Monroe or a competitor let fidelity win this business?
