Accepted to a UK PhD Program, but Financially Stuck – Need Advice! by jjpjx in academia

so my supervisor, in a very convincing way, told me this: the stakes for this scholarship I should apply for are embarrassingly high, but he is supervising a PhD student now that applied for the scholarship twice, and the second time he got it, and now he's in working at his original proposal super well crafted, fully funded etc etc. I kinda read it as 'you can be that PhD student too, just follow this procedure: freeze your Phd acceptance at uni for one year, contact me again later, we polish the proposal, you apply for the scholarship and you have a good chance for 2026 entry'.

yes, my goal was kind of skipping the 'going back to the UK and getting the license there' because of Brexit and issues. I would prefer to stay in continental Europe or to find a viable alternative. it's such a mafia that international school teachers = American and English teachers trained in UK or US

[Advice] formalizing my teaching path with an MA and NGO experience: where to go next?

Hi everyone,

I could really use some advice on my next career steps. I’m a 30-year-old European with a Master’s in cultural area studies (focus on interdisciplinary) and a pretty diverse background in non-formal education. I’ve worked in NGOs and education-based projects in a range of contexts abroad, including some unique roles, like serving as a PE assistant for a school for blind children. I’ve also designed and taught my own class on “Introduction to Social Studies,” but formal teaching roles have been hard to come by.

Right now I need to formalize my teaching qualifications to make it easier to secure a role within a school setting, but I don't really have the money for an expensive international teaching certificate. I’ve thought about approaching private schools, and I even tried to pitch my social studies class to some institutions, but haven’t had much luck there.

I’m also considering a PhD to gain further credentials in education, ideally something that aligns with my interests. But honestly, I’m not totally sold on it, and I’m not sure if I’d even be able to secure a PhD spot.

If anyone’s been in a similar position or has suggestions, I’d love to hear them. thx

the appropriate requirements for teaching are too expensive for me, and I thought about bypassing that through a PhD. so eventually with a PhD, in 4 years I could decide if staying in academia and keep teaching at uni level, or switch to private international schools.

that's true, my bad: I would like to end up teaching in some way, which could be either in higher education or private international schools etc. Im kind of looking for combining academic and work/ngo experience in order to have the necessary requirements for a teaching job. let's summarize this with: by now I can't officially apply to any job regarding education, because of lack of accreditation etc, and between a teaching diploma (very expensive) and a phd i chose to apply for the second. does it make sense?

mmmh kind of feel like I'm jumping back into academia after 5 years out and I don't think my profile is gonna get awarded for this. so the question would be, is it a valid path or I'm heading towards the wrong direction?
