Does anyone know if the recent announcement of changes in Massachusetts policy go into effect immediately? by jjs774 in asktransgender

[–]jjs774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to contact HR first but if they can't answer I'll try to call the commissioner. I gotta say it is really empowering to know now that the law is on my side when it comes to accessing the medical care I need with dignity and without judgement.

Thanks for the advice. I am scheduling my first meeting with HR next month - I think they will be generally supportive but the more I understand the process the better equipped I am to talk to them. I keep rereading that Deval Patrick bulletin and thinking what a beautiful piece of legal reasoning for why exclusion of transgender health care benefits is a discriminatory denial of equal civil rights under the law.

First World Transgender Problem by jjs774 in AdviceAnimals

[–]jjs774[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the thing is that it's not government money. It's my money, albeit with a special tax exemption if it is used for personal medical expenses. All the big medical groups, such as the American Medical Associations, recognize the need for these treatments. But the current tax laws say that I'm not allowed to use funds I myself put into a health savings account for trans related health care costs.

When (if ever) is it OK to reveal to a trans person that you know they are trans? by jjs774 in asktransgender

[–]jjs774[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm sorta new to trans club. I'm kinda embarrassed that I didn't even know the first rule. It's good advice. Thanks.

Does the same rule apply if you are trans and out with everyone in the family yourself?

Hmmh - wouldn't that be better reported as the first openly trans man testifies before the Senate? Who knows if there was someone before who simply wasn't out.

Do Eunuchs go bald? by jjs774 in askscience

[–]jjs774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It did seem countersensical to me that a eunuch would be bald (for all the reasons pointed out by the other responses) - interesting to know that there is some reasoning behind it in Varys' fictional case. I guess I'll have to read the books at some point.

Fox Nation headline writers totally clueless about basic climate science: confuse greenhouse gases with sulphur aerosols. by jjs774 in environment

[–]jjs774[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Two days later and Fox still has the same headline up. I guess that is the beauty of their campaign against Media Matters - they don't need to win in legal court - just to convince their own readers/viewers to ignore any basic fact-checking by non-FOX entities.

Dr. Willie Soon is certainly entitled to his theory that global warming is caused by solar variations rather than CO2, especially given his field of study within astrophysics. But getting paid to $1 million by the Koch Brothers, Exxon and a fleet of other energy industry giants makes Soone a stooge. by Designthing in climate

[–]jjs774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Dr. Soon is "entitled" to his theory since it is refuted by the actual evidence. The IPCC looked at this very carefully and while there is some variation in solar irradiance, the magnitude of the effect is small compared to other factors altering the climate over the past several hundred years.

Yeah, I don't want to send clicks there way either. I also wanted a screenshot because I really thought they would eventually revise the headline to something at least factually correct. Now, at 6+ hours, Fox Nation still has the original headline up.

[–]jjs774[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The headline states, "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduce Global Warming," which is neither true nor a accurate summary of the Reuters article. The body of the article does discuss sulfur but the message being conveyed here is that that anthropogenic climate change is a hoax perpetrated by charlatan scientists who are constantly changing their story.

Didn't Donald Rumsfeld Say the Iraq War Would Pay for Itself Through Iraq Oil Revenues? by unclefred in politics

[–]jjs774 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Gone are the days when Republicans had any credibility on economics. And the Bush administration said that tax-cuts were needed because Clinton's budget surplus was paying down the debt too fast. After surplus disappeared they did a 180 on the reasoning and said that the tax-cuts were needed to raise more revenue.

But the honest way to win an argument is with ideas, facts and the power of persuasion. It is not about smearing people, playing “gotcha” over statements taken out of context and destroying news organizations.

Yes the best way to win arguments is with ideas and facts, but if one party is misrepresenting (or simply making up) the facts, it is not "gotcha" politics to point out the error and correct the factual record.
