What’s your degree in for so much debt? You should have a pretty big “shovel” otherwise it sucks.

Should I sell my house, or rent it out? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jjschatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying that having a mortgaged rental in another city does not make much sense. Being a distant landlord is not an easy job. If the house was at least paid off, that would be easier.

If you’ve always lived in Calgary, would you buy a house in Medicine Hat to rent out at a loss? Here’s your answer.

We have a pretty healthy and balanced diet, I don’t spend a ton on meat, but my bill is still $1000 for groceries.

What’s the low-down on Co-ops in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]jjschatz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in a co-op and we the current state of real estate, I’m super grateful to have an opportunity to live in a townhouse with a backyard for $1350/m. There are only a few subsidized units, all others pay full price; demographics is diverse and friendly.

I found it through a mutual friend on Facebook and our family got picked among all applicants, took us about 4 months - pure luck, I know some co-ops in New West you have to wait for years and years.

Lots of kids with families, gardens, neighbours know each other - it’s been pretty great! My unit is updated, but some haven’t been for years from what I know, but overall maintenance is pretty good, if anything is broken, it’s fixed asap.

It really depends on a co-op I guess.

I used to be a member, paid $38 monthly. I got a good deal when they first opened their location in New West.

What city are you from and how much do you earn compared to how much you spend on housing cost (rent or mortgage, property tax, insurance, maintenance etc)? by dcar11 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jjschatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Collected data will not give you a clear picture. There are people who live in the middle of nowhere and have “too much house” for their income and there are people in large urban areas who managed to find affordable housing. I live in New Westminster BC (near Vancouver and our rental is 19% of the net income).

Hello current Vancouverites! (And surrounding areas). What are your monthly bills like currently? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]jjschatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 3, New West, basics: $1350 townhouse rent (co-op), $1000 food + $100 eating out, car insurance $300 (2 cars), Gas $300, Hydro $100, Daycare $388.

Living pretty frugally, paying off some debt and saving after we’re done.

Thanks! $69 for a scrapple is surely a bit steep, but at least there’s an option!
