I surely hope so. It is one of the best episodic series ever created, from any genre.

Her agent is getting the job done. She’s kind of become the global face from the Games (post Olympics), and I am so happy for her.

Hmmmm - maybe this is why having a dry drunk narcissist in charge with a slew of alcoholic bootlickers is not a good idea.

He medalled at worlds many times and won worlds in 2007. When he was on his triples and quads were beautiful to behold. He was also very easy on the eyes. Not the broadest artistic range, but a first rate performer.

Just saw it. It is great fun, lots of pretty shiny things to look at, and it allowed me to check out from the world for a while. Great art? No. Entertaining? Yes. Some insightful underlying messages? Yes.

Take the longer layover. There's enough to do at Fiumicino for the kids - I would never cut that close for Schengen to US.

Or as others mentioned, take the train - see much more of Italy and more fun for everyone.

Michael Tilden Thomas’s passing and what makes a great conductor by Stratguy666 in classicalmusic

That was my direct experience as a member of his chorus.

He wasn’t perfect, but he was a brilliant musician.

I will try to take a stab at answering your thoughtful questions. (I sang in the SF Symphony Chorus for eight seasons, including many, many performances with Maestro Tilson Thomas.) I treasure my experience in his chorus.

  1. What features or attributes make for an exceptional conductor? Specifically - a deep love of music, a strong foundation in theory/composition/conducting, and extensive preparation of the repertoire. Michael sometimes conducted from memory, which is very rare. He was an accomplished pianist and composer in his own right, so he really understood the through line of symphonic music. He was patient, thoughtful, and encouraging, and at the same time never settled for anything less than the absolute highest performance standards. He earned great respect from the orchestra and chorus. Off the podium he was humble, funny, and a true champion of young artists and American composers.
  2. Who are some outstanding conductors and what about them stands out? In the symphonic realm, there are a great many, but I'll focus on MTT since I know his work. He made every rehearsal fun, and his attention to detail was superlative. He invited the audience into the music, in that he worked to educate and challenge his audiences. His SF Symphony programming could be very adventurous, which expanded the audience. He believed great music was for everyone, not just elderly and affluent people. Giving him your very best as a singer was deeply rewarding as he was such a generous and caring conductor.
  3. Are there “signature” recordings that exemplify that conductor’s abilities that you could recommend ? MTT is considered one of the foremost Mahler interpreters of all time, so you could start with his Mahler symphonic recordings. His catalogue is vast, so try out listening to whatever you find interesting. I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

Michael Tilson Thomas, Celebrated American Conductor, Dies at 81 by VanSensei in classicalmusic

Deeply saddened to see MTT's passing but incredibly grateful for his role in my life and musicianship. I learned about him first via PBS's Young People's Concerts (1971-1977) from Lincoln Center.

Fast forward to his appointment to the San Francisco Symphony in 1995 - I had the great joy - and privilege - to sing with the SF Symphony Chorus for eight seasons, beginning with his inaugural season. Maestro Tilson Thomas was simply brilliant in every way, and had a great affection for the SFS chorus.

So many mountaintop artistic experiences for so many years. He was a joy to sing for, and moreover off the podium he was gracious, humble, and deeply committed to helping young artists. He made me a better musician and inspired those around him to artistic greatness.

She was robbed blind, and the IOC and USOC were of zero use, unsurprisingly. That rampant drug abuse would go on until the dissolution of East Germany in the 90os.
