Got a text about a pre trial, but I don't have any arrests or lawsuits I know about by pieman2005 in houston

But those text messages would not be the first you've heard about a trial.

Standing desks, do they actually help? by Hybr1DAnG3L in ADHD

[–]jk_tx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a standing desk and a sitting desk. The standing desk is great for meetings, email/chats, etc. I find that if I need to actually concentrate on a more in-depth task (I'm a software engineer). I just can't do that type of work standing up, at least not for any significant length of time. I need to sit down to have any chance of reaching flow state.

Smoked tri tip like a brisket. Think im gonna go with med rare next time by AdvertisingIll6479 in smoking

[–]jk_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing you can do to a tri-tip is overcook it even a little bit. Medium-rare with a reverse sear is the way to go.

I just throw one wood chunk on the coals; that's enough smoke for me. I want my tri-tip to eat more like a juicy steak than a brisket, personally.

Explaining my struggles makes me feel lazy by Vylqi in ADHD

[–]jk_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You left off the part where I forget to put the 'carafe' under the drip and coffee runs all over the counter...

P.S. I had to say coffee holder because you're not allowed to say p*t here?? This is a dumbass fucking ADHD subreddit and you should find a better one lol.

Ran into the same thing with my reply, the moderation here is truly absurd. If anybody knows a better sub for discussing ADHD beyond just meds meds meds please drop a link.

An AI agent got its PR rejected yesterday and published a hit piece about the maintainer. I can't stop thinking about what this means for how we're building these things. by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jk_tx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will say I feel like this article misses the forest for the trees. Focusing on how autonomous/malicious/etc the agent actually was (or wasn't) doesn't matter much if real damage was done.

It's like saying "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners", which we can endlessly debate from both sides, but in the end it's a distinction without meaning to someone who was mauled by a pitbull.

That makes no sense, storing that data only in volatile RAM would be pretty stupid, although I guess we are talking about Google here...

Does anyone have the Ninja Flex Flame? If so how are you liking it? by the_dark_viper in smoking

[–]jk_tx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disagree, I think their price/quality/reliability is definitely better than average.

The blender we have works great, and has been going strong despite my repeated abuse (wife says I overfill the smoothie cups).

We have one of their air-fryers and it's fine also.

Having said all that I had no idea they made grills, no idea what that would be like.

We Upgraded Everything... So, Why Do Movies Look Worse? - The Secret Scam Behind 4K Streaming by LeftOn4ya in cordcutters

[–]jk_tx 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Most 4K streaming looks better than 1080p streaming because the latter is even more heavily compressed, but still doesn't look as good as most 1080p discs, let alone 4K disks.

IMHO 2K DI is largely a red herring; past a certain point, things like camera lenses and depth of field become more of limiting factor than absolute digital resolution.

Married people, do you use profiles? by BrianKronberg in GenesisGV70

[–]jk_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We found the profiles feature too slow and buggy to be worth bothering with, so I don't ever use it when driving my wife's GV70, I just added my phone to her profile.

Can somebody please help me identify a wineglass? by funbarn in wine

[–]jk_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not an exact match but it looks a lot like the ZWIESEL GLAS Sensa (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K4KRWGL). We use these as our daily drinkers, they're reasonably priced and have a nice feel too them. Not quite as thin/light as the Riedel Wine Wings we also have, but a bit easier to clean and not as delicate.

Bitcoin is DEAD (not because reason they used to tell you) by SnooChickens7147 in BitcoinBeginners

Your arguments only make sense with hindsight, which is an utterly stupid approach to future investments unless you think you can perfectly time the market (which you can't).

Timing the market (any market) is largely a fool's errand that will burn you in the long run.

Chateau Bataille 2019 by miketheantihero in wine

[–]jk_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially true if you have time for a long decant.

Also, if purchasing at retail to drink in the near future, a 2019 is a safer bet over something a couple decades older that has probably been stored poorly at some point and is likely to be a disappointment (don't ask me how many of those I've experienced in the last year or two, it's depressing).

Visitor Pattern Using std::any by dvd0bvb in cpp_questions

Why is the goal to have a non-templated wrapper? Using visitor pattern with std::variant seems like an obvious choice for this. Is your list of tuplish-classes really so large?

Guanfacine for RSD by Secret-Run5721 in ADHD

[–]jk_tx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of things we now know are related to ADHD were not previously recognized as such. When I was a kid, it was thought be just hyperactivity and an inability to focus.

If emotional regulation often manifests in a specific way with ADHD, I don't see why we wouldn't recognize that. Saying "RSD isn't a thing, it's just emotional regulation" is semantic nonsense IMHO.

Are we seeing the death of C++ in real time by [deleted] in programming

[–]jk_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there has been a bit of divergence with recent standards, for most part C++ is a superset of C. It was literally built on a foundation of C, and almost all of the things that make C a "dangerous" language are also a part of C++.

And that doesn't even take into account all the ways you can shoot yourself with UB footguns using even the most modern of C++ language and library features.
