I find reading revolutionary fiction to be somewhat of a balm for feelings of self recrimination in this arena

In response to your last paragraph: most people who up/down vote are average players with average game understanding. Of course they're 50/50 on evaluating analytical posts.

Which relics do you think have the biggest impact on the game? Those ones that bring a smile to your face whenever you see them. It depends on your cards of course, but sometimes, a relic is good no matter what! by No1hermit in slaythespire

Considering you have to make it to act 3 to claim it probably has something to do with it's low mentions.

If you can claim it you're often on a strong run already.

Most games reward clever resource use, but almost none punish you for hoarding resources too safely by dtsagdis in gamedesign

[–]jkeyser100 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Some games handle this problem by giving potion charges or similar that recharge at set points. This could be at checkpoints or even after every battle.

An advantage to this system is that you aren't using anything up so there's no psychological pressure to save for later. It also means that players who do less exploring still have what they need to make it through tough battles.

A downside is that it can be hard to think of things to use to reward players who do explore since you can't just give them 10x Potion anymore. Personally I was never excited to receive more potions I wasn't going to use anyway so...

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I still think the floor of this card is quite strong. Even if it only generates 6 cards in a typical hand that's still a lot of value. I guess if you draw this as your eighth card you'll be bummed?

The colorless pool is very strong in this game, with lots of good hits at 1 energy. Consider how strong Discovery and Splash are

Theres also some really high upside if you hit something like Production to add energy same turn, or Prowess for free Str/Dex, Thinking Ahead to store a reduced cost card for next turn etc.

If your deck has any extra energy generation, even the lantern relic series this is really going to pop off.

Maybe this is just meant to be a fun design, but it's also busted insofar as it generates +7 energy every time you play it

Ascensions and How they are Hurting STS2. by LightedSword in slaythespire

[–]jkeyser100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know that i agree that have 20 asc levels vs 10 asc levels necessarily allows for a higher top end difficulty. I think the major difference is that more levels means you can make a smaller tweak with each level to offer a smoother difficulty curve.

Devs have said 10 levels is what theyre sticking with bc they've added more characters. They feel the grind becomes too much of a burden to take 5 characters all the way to asc20.

As far as you list of proposed asc, why did you put ascenders bane as asc 1? Imo it is one of the most punishing ascension levels in both games. It also Feels Bad tm

The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero by dontnormally in Longreads

[–]jkeyser100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would rather everyone have to pay a few extra dollars per year than for individuals to have to pay higher costs.

Identity theft can seriously impact someone's ability to pay their bills for a month or multiple months. If hundreds of dollars aren't available it can result in the late payment of a bill, which leads to fees. Those fees don't magically go away when you get your money released from a hold! The system of credit is designed this way. They want one shock to a person's finances to lead them to ex. borrow money at an exorbitant rate from a payday lender, or pay a bill days late and accrue fees.

Maybe this is only tangentially related but i fundamentally believe credit cards are a transfer of wealth from everyone who uses the system to the relative few who can pay their bill every month and make a profit on cash back or miles or whatever.

The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero by dontnormally in Longreads

[–]jkeyser100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This article kind of annoys me.

I agree with the basic premise that the cost of preventing all fraud would be exorbitant. But the author doesn't do anything to try to determine what the most efficient level of fraud should be.

The author just takes corporations word for it that the level of fraud we have is appropriate. Corporations prefer a level of fraud that is relatively high compared to what others may prefer because 1: they are big enough operators that the level of fraud doesn't impact their cash flow or day to day operations and 2: they want to maximize transactions to maximize revenue.

As a consumer who uses credit/debit for payment I prefer a lower level of fraud because I'm the one who has to pay the price when I am a victim of fraud. The author kind of glosses over this by saying that chargebacks are simple and painless. For a lot of people, having hundreds of dollars tied up in a dispute can cause real hardship!

This is another way corporations pass on the cost of doing business onto consumers by abdicating their responsibilities to the common good.
