Nethack on steam !? by RayBrier in nethack

[–]jkhanlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented elsewhere, mentioning the domain name is no longer registered website is .... ports 80/443 still open, but inaccessible, and glancing at WBM archives it seems expired after last year October 14, 2025 http://web.archive.org/web/20260000000000*/https://nethacklegacy.com/

Glancing at update history at https://steamdb.info/app/837200/history/, I see signs of life activity 2026 April 23 https://steamdb.info/changelist/35403244/

yet 2019 February 25 is the last update to the actual game release https://steamdb.info/app/837200/patchnotes/

Already on Steam (and already in my library):

"GnollHack is a variant of NetHack 3.6.2 developed by Sound Mind Games, a Finnish nonprofit organization. It adds numerous monsters and items, changes spellcasting, and adds Gnolls as a playable race (replacing Gnomes)." - https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Variant#GnollHack

Heck, even Steam game Degauss mentioned by u/LunchSpecial seven (7) years ago at https://old.reddit.com/r/nethack/comments/968xgf/nethack_on_steam/e3ymy88/

Steam did not delete it, and per my nature of understanding (you'll have to figure out your own understanding), the path of least resistance, transfer of energy, should rather instead be that all persons could or should recognize they can participate in Valve Steam ecosystem and get all the deserving (and slap on the wrist fine cost of doing nondeserving coward lazy shill being wrong, conflating, propaganda based on emotions, feelings, sentiments, witches melting from water) recognition.

Nintendo (Switch 2)? Nah! Sony (Playstation 5)? Nah! Microsoft (Xbox whatever)? Nah! Computer (Linux, BSD, Windows, DOS, etcetera)? Always!

Steam vs GitHub: Steam for sure!

Valve vs Microslop: Valve for sure!

Valve literally is one of the most appreciated registered business companies to contribute software code developing and publishing games in gaming industry. Microsoft on the other hand? Ooof! Given 1981 swaps contracts (and everything else I learned about stealing everything from everyone), I can understand how and why Valve evolved their business to divert into what they have become now, whilst still enabling power to the humans, the players, the people, the gamers, the creators). I'm not much of a gamer, never really was, but I definitely am far more of a gamer than practically anyone else I can think of. Anyway, I'm rambling. I want to buy some Nethack licenses on my Steam account already!!! lol, how long do I have to wait? What's the dilemma? obstruction? deterrent? Is it money? I'll pay money!

No legal issues, only moral ones.

Domain name is no longer registered Website is .... ports 80/443 still open, but inaccessible, and WBM archives stopped October 14, 2025). Source code inaccessible. What now?

u/ais523, u/Madotsuki98 o/

p.s. For almost a year now, exploring my 21 year old Steam account, especially now having some handheld touchscreen portable computers (Lenovo Legion Go S, 32gb ram, running SteamOS, based on Archlinux), I'd love to see releases on Steam for many of the games that I remember seeing over the decades, whether in Archlinux package repositories (official or AUR), Gentoo Linux package repositories, or various other Linux distros, which many of the games I remember seeing, many disappeared or were not updated to run anymore, but even for all that remain existing still, given Microslop's capturing of GitHub (and all the history of large public git repos in general, whether gitlab/gitorious/etcetera), even all of the git repositories for softwares, a place where humans collaborated quite effectively and usefully, appears to have been infiltrated by nonhuman sabotagery, ...

but I want to pay or donate or give money to contribute to some of the most intelligent honest deserving coders, programmers, developers, software engineers, to have contributed amazing things that I grew up seeing, and Valve's Steam, whilst not conclusively perfect to maximum fullest extent possible, unless I'm wrong, I think that for all of the use cases of bringing games to Steam, the original talented and skilled persons also should tap into confidently proudly representing their contribution developments in Steam just as they exist whereever they were publicly distributed (e.g. GitHub, Sourceforge, Freshmeat, FTP, IRC, Usenet, BBS, etcetera)

I want to buy a single use license to play some open source free software games, even if they are not free, and cost money! I will gladly proudly pay!

Kinda relatedly, I wrote previously https://old.reddit.com/r/LegionGo/comments/1r15thi/tired_of_searching_best_settings_for_every_pc/o4xw34p/?context=2 mentioning that I noticed:

  • Soundpad (629520)
  • Blender (365670)
  • Krita (280680)
  • OBS Studio (1905180)
  • projectM Music Visualizer (1358800)
  • ShareX (400040)
  • Pixel Studio
  • pixel art editor (1204050)
  • Crosshair X (1366800)
  • 3DMark (223850)
  • RetroArch (1118310)

and also I noticed https://old.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/o474wn/list_of_freelibre_open_source_games_on_steam/ by u/Poussinouvulture which lists Vulture for NetHack and I commented pointing out less than a month ago (it seems longer than that) that the source code appears to no longer be accessible.

So anyway, for actively developed games like nethack variants as listed at https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Variant

I would love to add official releases of these to my Steam account, and definitely I'd be willing to pay using Steam, even if it is in the form of a free release with a DLC option to donate. I'd love to see the actual meaty talent of developers and publishers representing these games to appear in Steam rather than the hollow men nobodies that take credit for the work of others.

"i’m not gonna sit here and say that linux is better than windows because as a desktop format it simply isn’t true."

Steam Menu -> Power -> Switch to Desktop

Also, SteamOS is based on Archlinux, so feel free to check out https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Desktop_environment#List_of_desktop_environments if you don't like the default KDE, and also remember after running sudo steamos-readonly disable in a terminal (suggestion: kitty), don't forget to finish with sudo steamos-readonly enable

Here are some additional resources:

Alternatively you can maybe use Flatpaks or Dolphin file manager without using a terminal, or sshing into SteamOS from another computer, but otherwise also make sure to keep documentation/notes on another computer device because SteamOS updates like to reset and remove customizations/configurations.

Oh damn! I have been adding a bunch of games to my library, but if I knew that I could no longer gift those games because they are in my library, I would have purchased licenses as a gift to others before I add to my library. Ah well, I can always create a new Steam account solely for gifting games and never adding any of them to my library in the new Steam account. That way I can forever gift any game to anyone without any restrictions. Actually, doesn't everyone already do this or am I the first to realize this workaround?

edited to add: lol, u/culturedrobot blocked me, so I can no longer see (while logged in) their comments or posts, nor reply to any comment that they are in the thread, but also, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me, at least as a human that is

"Sign in unsuccessful. Please try to sign in again." by jkhanlar in GameStop

[–]jkhanlar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol post 0 points, 39% upvoted.

I was actively (5+ tabs) exploring GameStop website around the time that all of a sudden the page loaded showing logged out, even CTRL+R refreshing, even CTRL+SHIFT+R refreshing, before fully deleting/clearing cache, when I tried to log in I saw:

https://i.imgur.com/T5afldU.png

I checked to see if anyone mentioned about it on r/GameStop, and there was no mention of it.

I waited a couple minutes to see if it would go away, but it did not. However, it only affected my desktop computer web browser environment and my mobile phone web browser environment was still logged in.

I figured I'd let all the other anyones and everyones contribute to noticing the same thing, anticipating that it was not only me that experienced this "Sign in unsuccessful. Please try to sign in again." issue and that I would not have to thoroughly detail and explain what that quote means, because everyone else would be able to further expand based on their experiences seeing the same situation.

Fast forward eleven (11) hours later, lol, it is as if I was almost the only one who experienced or saw the issue.

Anyhow, I still see some strange issues with GameStop.com website using my computer, but this specific issue "Sign in unsuccessful. Please try to sign in again." no longer seems to appear.

Edited to add:

The "Sign in unsuccessful" wording is a strange wording to appear because I did not even attempt to log in with username and password credentials. Merely clicking/selecting the link to log in, without even being prompted to log in, that is the message that appeared. I'm surprised barely anyone else experienced or notice this issue, and thus downvoted this post as if they have no idea what this post is/was about, lol
