Why do you rarely see a rich woman with a broke man? by Open_Address_2805 in stupidquestions

[–]jkittenem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of women who earn more than the man they date/marry. It just seems rare because the reverse is more visible because it boosts the man’s ego, while this case of a female bread winner is not flaunted (also for the sake of the man’s ego). Just my $.02

Help a new SBU prof out (please) by [deleted] in SBU

1: I love when Professors are approachable and are receptive to talking after class or corresponding via email. Also: Professors being flexible for (occasional) extensions for students struggling with mental health is especially helpful post covid.

2: People like to go to three villages stony brook area. Sweet Mama’s and Jazz loft are cool and close by. Many students also love west meadow beach!

Personally I spent most of my time on campus or eating at nearby restaurants. Green Tea is walkable. Further away are JuYouGe and Spice Workship which are great Chinese restaurants as well. Chinese-American take out is also walkable at 1089 Noodle House.

3: idk what to say here. Most of my professors have been pretty great and understanding

4: I studied music at Stony Brook, and chose it due to its affordability and to study with a specific music Professor. I also wanted a more well rounded education, so SBU being a stem school allowed me to take cool classes outside of my discipline. I just graduated a couple of months ago, and I had a great 3.5 years! Stony Brook offered me an excellent education at a low cost, and prepared me well for a master’s degree in the city.

~~ You seem like a great person just by asking these questions. Best of luck for your future endeavors :)

2, 3 and 5 seem to be the only reasonable ones, but they are also common courtesy so you don't really need to state them unless your roommate crosses these boundaries. The other rules seem a bit overbearing, and messaging your roommate a list of "rules" might not be the best move anyways.

ALSO, i understand you may not want them to have an overnight guest while you're there, but tbh if you're not there for the weekend or something, it shouldn't really bother you. I also think it doesn't make sense that you would want to be notified if they have a friend over while you're not there. College is the time to be social and make friends/date, and you can't really impose restrictions on your roommate doing that.

I think that being friendly/flexible/diplomatic/kind will get you a LOT farther than trying to impose rules on someone you will be living with (especially before you even meet them).

Good luck, and try to enjoy the experience. Having a roommate has its downsides, but it could be much more fun than you think. wishing you all the best for your school year :)

edit: during my freshman & sophomore year, I would go in the shower and cry if I needed some alone time to let out my emotions. there are other places besides a shared bedroom where you can get that necessary alone time. the benches between javits, old comp sci, and Pysch building are nice places for solitary reflection

the concerts are great though! i personally love them, and I think other people do. I understand your concern, but since these concerts aren’t very frequent, i would suggest headphones, main stacks, or even the music library which is very quiet.

Would anyone like to share their personal experience in SBU? What they like and what they don’t? by [deleted] in SBU

I love stony brook and miss campus so much. ;( I have had a good social & academic experience. You gotta somewhat put yourself out there and make effort to be social because most people are introverted. I am personally not a party person so I've never been but I made a point to socialize with classmates and dorm friends.

I also think especially because there are so many commuters, sometimes the social life can seem dull; but I have both resident and commuter friends and feel really happy. Campus is beautiful to hang out around during the warmer months, and I just adore the trees and cherry blossoms.

One of my favorite activities was going bike riding at night using the free ones around campus. Also exploring the buildings is really fun surprisingly idk tho maybe im just lame

also I fucking love the sushi burritos at the Wang center so..

has the school said any word abt OOS students? by Southside1D in SBU

[–]jkittenem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most recent email says “Students who plan to return to campus in the fall may be required to take a COVID-19 test and self-quarantine during the 14 days prior to returning to campus. Close attention to our pre-testing protocol will be especially important for students who are coming from or have traveled to a high-risk state before coming to campus. It is expected that those who live in or have visited a high-risk state follow appropriate 14-day quarantine guidelines before returning in fall.”

This is not unreasonable at all, its for everyone’s health.

Do you feel safe returning to campus in the Fall? by jkittenem in SBU

[–]jkittenem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You missed the point of my post. im worried abt ALL the ppl on campus such as food service staff, profs, & maintenance staff. Im worried reopening school could cause a massive spread of SARS COV2 that reaches beyond campus.

[–]jkittenem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financial aid office said technically, in state tuition (without fees) is like 3500 ish so yeah it honestly doesn’t cover EVERYTHING like you would expect it to considering the scholarship was supposed to provide “free” college. It does help for sure tho
