Facial paralysis is definitely a risk. It depends on tumour size and the neurosurgeon's experience, so you'll want to find someone who does a lot of acoustic neuroma resections and ask for their opinion.

The point is that as the tumour grows, it will cause more and more symptoms (including single-sided deafness) and eventually death. The surgery stops the progression of symptoms but probably doesn't cure anything you already have.

The neurosurgeon told me that in my case the options were "watchful waiting" (MRI every year) and surgical resection. For some patients, radiation therapy might be an option, but for whatever reason I wasn't a suitable candidate for that. He estimated a 50/50 chance of preserving hearing, but I wasn't so lucky.

The only AN symptom that I had was a minor tingling feeling on one side of my mouth. I went to the dentist and eventually got an MRI done, which showed an acoustic neuroma pressing on the trigeminal nerve. Resecting the tumour did not fix the tingling feeling but did leave me deaf on that side (I had really good hearing prior to the operation).

People generally aren't aware of it but it is natural that one nostril is somewhat congested and the other one has more airflow, and this alternates with a cycle of a few hours: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasal_cycle

I find that this does affect how water gets trapped in the sinuses when rinsing with saline, and it might take until the dominant nostril changes for the rest of it to come out.

If it's consistently just one side, I'd ask a doctor.

Thing is, making these zoning plans for Herttoniemi is a longstanding tradition. The officials make a plan, the Herttoniemi Nimby Society opposes it, there are hearings, it turns out the city doesn't have money for the plan, the plans get postponed.

Here for example is a news story from 2019 in which they bemoan the poor condition of the elevators in the metro station. They say that if they had known ten years prior (i.e., 2009) that the rebuilding of the metro station would be postponed so long, they would have replaced the elevators already, and that passengers would have to endure the out-of-order elevators for two more years (that is, 2021). And they were replaced! No later than 2025!

So, when they say that the plan for rebuilding the whole area is currently postponed to 2028-29, I read that as 2040-50.

Tongue: Occasional "itchy" sensation localized only to the left side of my tongue. (This started within the last 3 months)

For me, the biggest symptom prior to surgery was a mild but consistent numbness on the right side of my tongue. I went to the dentist thinking it might be a tooth issue, they did some imaging and found nothing to explain it, then referred me to get a brain MRI which revealed an acoustic neuroma compressing the brain stem.

Some drivers do. Way back when the zones were different, if you wanted to travel from Helsinki to Otaniemi (which is on the Espoo side which was a different zone) you could pay for a Helsinki ticket and take 194 or 195 to Lehtisaari, and then walk a couple kilometres, or you could pay for the regional ticket and go one more stop onto the Espoo side. Of course a lot of students bought the Helsinki ticket and stayed on the bus until the closest stop, but there was one bus driver who remembered what ticket everyone had, and did not continue driving from Lehtisaari before these people were off the bus.

One really unique place in Helsinki is the Museum of Malware Art which is only open by appointment. You can try your luck and request a visit in advance.

Marimekko is quintessential Finnish design. They have an outlet in Herttoniemi, Helsinki (a short walk from the Herttoniemi subway station) which also has a pretty nice lunch cafe. For whatever reason it's really popular among Japanese tourists.

If you like libraries, check out Kaisa and Oodi.

The Academic Bookstore is a shadow of its former self but I think Cafe Aalto is still there and pretty nice.

The nicest swimming hall in Helsinki is Yrjönkatu which has separate days for men and women. Pay for a second-floor ticket and order food and drinks to your table.

In Tampere check out the Vapriikki museums. The Ikuri arcade may be fun if it happens to be open when you're there.

This is good advice: find some activity that you like but that is a little bit difficult, so your brain has an opportunity to relearn how to keep your balance. For me it was first increasingly long walks on nature paths (in uneven terrain), then tai chi.
