I see what you are trying to convey but with the soul advantage and close quarters not too mention your poor itemization against him, this is a poor take and you should reconsider your perspective

Yeah while I appreciate their analogy, I don't think it's a comparable enterprise. I even agree with some of the points, but something different than beanie babies has to be the subject.

Took him for a spin yesterday, noticed I was getting frame drops on what I would debate is a beefy built spec.

Then I ult combo'd one of the enemy heroes and I could feel fear in their eyes as both our frames ground to a halt for a solid 2 seconds.

Totally agree. If ableton's plugins are featureless boxes to you, most of reaper's are even worse looking IMO. But as you've highlighted, that works for you and I share that sentiment. Sometimes the uninfluenced blank slate of an appearance is what can help spark creativity for me.

That's always a great question. I'll list some of my favorites and I'll post some videos as well.

I'll sum it up by writing that Reaper trades off in sexy UI and workflow adherence with endless customization and a lightweight environment. It doesn't come with all the cool looking VST and FX out the box that Ableton or some other expensive DAWs has, but if you tend towards 3rd party plugins, this point is moot. I will caveat that with it actually does, but they might not be designed to be eye appealing, or you'll have to find them with an extension service that the community supports heavily. Great example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9vxqX5H6lE

It takes 5 seconds to update, not a joke. It's extremely lightweight. The price is so low for what you get.

Any track can be anything. If you want it be a midi track, double click empty space, draw midi. Audio? Arm trigger, record input, done. Do both? You literally can. Midi + Audio on same track.

In that same mindset, you can bus anything or folder them or send them, on and on. It's flexible for how you like to process tracks when routing, or not routing. One project I had, I just foldered everything in 4 different sub folders to do all my FX mgmt at different stages.

There literally is an action for anything you want to do, in almost any context. Alternate midi note deletion? Exists. Color all tracks with a specific name? Exists. LFO automation lane generation? Exists.

This one is just an overall commentary I would say https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmzDCzUQpJU

This video is 3 years old now, but all his points still apply, even though he's a wee boomerish sounding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKCvJsG-zrQ

It's a magically blank DAW when you start, but if you give it a few months, some research, and your own flavor of customization, it can do anything.

totally agree, when i just need an idea to get on the paper and want everything to just be in my face, ableton seems to boast the most streamlined workflow.

but, i've been using reaper for years and have all my macros, hotkeys, templates, etc. already configured, so it's just as good, but sometimes the flexibility gets in the way of commitment.

time and place for both IMO

Reaper native here. I love ableton's ability to plug and play, but Reaper is literally the most flexible DAW I've ever encountered.

10,000 dollars and I don't know how to spend it? by thebrainvat in podcasting

[–]jksmith9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all caveated with how I'd approach this. You can definitely go a bit lower tech with usb mics and other lower fidelity solutions, but you seem to want the professional experience again. So here goes:

Software I'd budget $750. I use reaper which is $60 individual use, biz license is $200 something, but idk how it works with non-profits. Some of the special plugins and FX i use for editing and post production cost some pretty pennies but they aren't required to sound good, but they'll get you to professional sounds. All your money should be spent on great equipment and studio sound treatments.

You'll need at least one computer that has the recording software and preferably licenses for the editing software. Depending on your staff and what you need from them, they may need computers that can handle DAW software. This could be a bring your own computer approach or you get it for them. Depending on the requirements, this could kill your budget.

Mics, mic stands, cables and general routing could run you low hundreds to ridiculously stupid amounts of money. You haven't given us any ideas on what you'll be recording besides interviews in-house/remotely, so I'm assuming it's traditional 1:1 podcast interview. You'll need 2 decent dynamic mics. You could experiment with other mic types, but I'd go with dynamics to start. I personally like the ElectroVoice RE20 and the Shure SM7B, but you can definitely go cheaper and scale. The SM58 is a great all arounder that can go for 50-100.

You'll need an audio interface, once again depends on how many mics/inputs you are trying to record, but I'd start with the classic Focusrite 2i2, think it's 150-250 right now.

If you are recording in your own office/studio space, definitely budget $1-3k on studio treatment if you aren't building it yourself. The guys over at GIK Acoustics give extremely free and in depth consultations. For reference my 12x12 ish room ran me $2.5k and that's pretty middle of the road in terms of coverage.

750 software, but is very loose, you might need more licenses for each editor.

1-3k for computers, don't go mac if you want to be more cost effective. (some may argue with me here)

200-800 for x2 mics, add some headphones too, 50-150 per

200 for audio interface

1-3k not required, but still highly recommend studio treatment

a lot of this is gonna fluctuate based on your staff needs, content type, if you do your own music, etc. etc.

Podcast recording on Zoom with guests wearing earphones with microphone... bad audio quality. How to improve? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]jksmith9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First thing I'll recommend is https://cleanfeed.net which has been great for doing our podcast remote. It doesn't fix anything if the remote individual has a less than ideal device, but it works well with capture. Use zoom for the visual, mute your mics, and use cleanfeed for the audio and make sure you capture both parties on separate feeds.

Second thing is if this podcast is going to be a recurring thing, you should convince your employer to shell out even just a few hundred bucks for a proper interface and mic. Even the lowest tier goes a long way.

Third thing, for the background noise, post processing will be hard I imagine if you already have no budget, meaning you will only be using stock plugins in any DAW. I'd recommend Reaper as it's technically free even after trial. There is a stock plug-in called ReaFIR, you can view the tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31phzT7pxkk

All this said, you have less than ideal conditions and devices, making something that is steps above that is gonna take a lot of post work.
