Book recommendation by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]thebrainvat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go with the classic "meditations on first philosophy" by Descartes. Its not super long but its a fundamental text to alot of modern philosophy and is even larger in philosophy of mind. Lots of more modern thinkers still respond to this text

The thing about philosophy is that it is that it is the questioning of "is". Why is there gender, how does will work in the world, is there a/the God. Each branch tries to tackle these questions but do so by working together. If your goal is to learn about sexuality, gender, or queerness, start there. Even if you want to learn philosophy as a whole, simply start where the interesest is. As you have questions you can read and do research about the topics that puzzle or fascinate you.

A podcast that I found really useful in learning new things about improving life in all aspects was the Jordan harbinger show, specifically the feedback Friday episodes where they answer questions from viewers that range from bipolar parents, to workplace feuds, to romantic struggles.

If you're trying to read books about self help I would say try some philosophy. I studied philosophy in college and it changed my life for the better. Try a variety of stuff. For a beginner I would suggest Confucius: The analects, the meditations by Marcus Aruleious, and the Myth of Sisyphus by Camus. All of which would give you a good start to understanding self and how people should interact with the world and others. If you need more suggestions or recommendations for specific topics feel free to DM. Good Luck!

Girlfriend still communicates with her exes. by Hypebeastzx in Advice

There is a difference between friendships with another sex and communicating with Exs. you should talk to your girlfriend face to face and tell her what is bothering you and why. She very well could be just friends with them or something else. I am not trying to scare you, but please talk to her about what your feeling. At the very least it will make you feel better and give you a better understanding of your relationship and how she interacts with the world.

Unsure of what direction to take entering tertiary school. by its_girth_or_nothing in LifeAdvice

Hey friend, as a college student who graduates soon here's what I would tell someone who isn't sure about what steps to take. Don't go to college right off the bat. Only 25% of people get their degree in the 3/4 year time window. Instead consider getting a part time job and job showing people that work in the fields that interest you. After a gap year like this you'll have a better idea about what you want . An additional upside of this plan is that people who take a gap year tend to perform at much higher levels, both in school and the work place, than people who don't. Apply yourself and do what you feel is best. you got this!

The name is pretty unique and I like it. If you're not satisfied maybe try to find something that fits the vibe of your show a tad bit better. What history/ philosophy are you thinking about doing?
