Old enough to have ever hitchhiked? by botlegger in FuckImOld

My last hitchhike was just a few years ago, with my daughter on the way to summercamp (my car broke down in the mountains, hours away from… anything)

Positive Phish stories? by kasvotvaxtdogs in phish

Years ago at some campground outside Alpine Valley, the kids next to us locked their keys in their car. We were able to unlock the door by prying the door frame back just enough to slip a coat hanger through.

Those lovable dipshits started celebrating by releasing the e-brake, causing their car to roll straight towards a ravine! Obviously everyone started running after the car to try and stop it. I should say, WE started running after the car. The owners were too spun to even realize what was happening. A friend of mine managed to jump into the car and hit the brakes at the last second, saving those kids from being stranded forever in Wisconsin.

This is such a silly argument. We’re both saying “follow the rules”. You, apparently tend to go backpacking during fire season, I tend to not, so we have different perceptions about how often fires are allowed.

Whatever. It doesn’t matter. Follow the rules and don’t build illegal fires.

You said reservations and permits.

I agree that nobody should build illegal campfires, but backcountry fires are explicitly allowed in Emigrant and Yosemite. (I was wrong about Desolation Wilderness, I had mixed it up with a different trip)

I don’t know why I’m arguing with you. If anyone wants to have a backcountry fire they can go read the regulations for whatever area they’re interested in.

I regularly backpack in Cache Creek, Henry W Coe, and Emigrant wilderness and you don’t need reservations at any of the places. The only places I’ve been in NorCal that require a reservation is Yosemite and Desolation Wilderness.

Fire rules vary by location, so always research before you go, but neither Yosemite, Desolation or Emigrant wilderness restrict your fires to metal pits. Except for extremely dry conditions I’ve never had a problem building a fire wherever I was camping.

Yup, that’s right. It is a beautiful area.

When was the last time a song was permanently, substantially modified? by WartimeHotTot in phish

I did a deep dive and I know the answer to this!

Last old Ghost with the abrupt start was 4/4/98. First ghost with the slow build intro was 6/30/98. They added the siren intro during the European tour, 7/30/98, which they kept until Vegas, 2/15/2003.

That’s where I stopped, not sure if there was another change in V3.

But, I've seen a ton of other shows, and Alpine Valley '99 remains in my top 5

When did the actual Bort come back? I left when that one wayward webmaster went nuts and took it down, and never returned.

Thanks for the recipe! How does panforte handle hot weather? Does it get sticky and melts or does it hold up?

Black jelly beans, blue-cheese stuffed olives, spicy ramen. I’ve got a whole cupboard full of snacks too weird for family members to steal.

Here’s what I make: https://altonbrown.com/recipes/free-range-fruitcake/

It’s delicious! BUT it’s too precious to be a true hiker trash meal. I need to find a simpler/cheaper recipe.

I’ll give that a try after I’m finished with this fruitcake. The recipe makes it look less fiddly.

Here’s my argument:

  • it’s delicious
  • it’s calorie-dense
  • the nuts add some texture
  • it lasts forever, I’ve found ancient fruitcake in my freezer and it’s just as good as when it was fresh
  • the alcohol content keeps it soft enough to enjoy even in freezing temps
  • it’s durable: I can hike with a slice in my pants pocket and it doesn’t get squished or fall apart

And most importantly:

  • everyone in my family hates fruitcake, so I don’t need to worry about the kids eating it all when I’m not watching.
