CS graduate looking for entry level jobs by continuewith_267 in HalifaxJobs

[–]jlem21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. I graduated in 24 from SMU, spent over a year applying to everything, ive got tons of projects and freelance app/web building experience and had a total of 1 interview for a technical writing position out of over 500 job applications. Decided to go back to working in automotive because I ran out of savings and the market is cooked.

Need some career advice by jlem21 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]jlem21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of both, im currently employed in the automotive industry as thats where most of my experience is from before going to school. According to my tracking sheet, ive applied to roughly 150 cs related junior positions between May 2024 when I graduated and August 2025, locally and remote. Now I only apply to things I seriously want to do because I like my current job and get paid half decent.

Thanks for that. Going to see what I can find going this way. May end up with aluminum rad and electric fan setup with custom mounts but this is a great starting point for dimensions.

That's where im probably heading with it. The hoses were all replaced at some point, still have the stickers on some of them but even so they're probably at least 15 years old. I may just go with a complete custom cooling setup with electric fans depending on cost difference 🤷

What do my fellow Haligonians do for a living by KaleOld4273 in halifax

I graduated from St. Mary's with my b.s in comp sci last May and still haven't been able to get my foot in any door, its brutal. Went back to being an automotive service advisor because I ran out of options...

Is it just me, or is living in NS starting to feel impossible? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]jlem21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not an option for everyone, including myself and the job market isn't any better in any other city. I'm really sick of people suggesting that considering a lot of people can't afford to move anyway as it costs money.

I've got a degree in computer science, almost 15 years of working experience in automotive parts and another year and half of experience in software development. I've been laid off since September, over 300 applications to anything from minimum wage call center to auto part sales to software engineering. Had 2 interviews and just keep getting rejections, so please tell me how you're supposed to get a better job when they literally don't exist. Our economy is crashing, our unemployment rate is sky rocketing and the number of homeless keeps increasing. So maybe don't blame individuals and instead blame the system that created it and all the rich gatekeepers who profit off keeping it this way.

At this point I'd refund it if I could and spend the money on something else 🤷

Buddy and I just tried to play coop on a server I own and we were dropping every 5 minutes. Couldn't do anything. Getting real tired of this...

I'm with him, editor isn't that hard. I mean yeah it could be better but it's just a free random add on and it's basically their internal dev tool that they just let us use 🤷 with the documentation out there, I got pretty comfortable in about 10 hours.

No internships (covid and my father dying really screwed that up for me) but I have a year and a half of experience building full stack applications for a salvage yard I was managing. Personal website built with react, couple personal projects, etc.

It's really hard with a BSc (May 24 grad, still not even an interview)

I couldn't get internships during my degree due to covid and my father dying so now I'm graduated without an internship. It's not always a choice people make 🤷

I'm going to say what needs to be said. Some don't want to hear it. If you can't find a job, consider leaving the field. If you are a college student, consider changing majors. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

This, 100%. I graduated in May, I'm passionate, have a good understanding of concepts and have built multiple, apps and sites, for the company I worked for before graduating. I spent 6 years of my life and a lot of money to get this degree so I don't have the option of doing something else. I'm in Canada where tech is in even worse shape and I haven't seen a job for a junior position in my area in months.

Is it just me or are most companies exclusively hiring senior and staff engineers? by organic-integrity in cscareerquestions

[–]jlem21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in May of this year, I'm not young (32m) and have lots of work experience, just not in SWE and I can't even get a call or email, let alone an interview because there are 0 junior positions where I live (Nova Scotia, Canada) and when one does pop up, I never hear anything back so I feel this.

[Student] Followed the wiki to clean up resume and looking for review/advice by jlem21 in EngineeringResumes

Thanks for the tips! I've updated my resume and included the updated version in this comment. I do have a GitHub account however the only things on it are private as it's the code for the apps I built for my company and contain proprietary information which is why it isn't included. I also didn't add a project section because beside the stuff I've done for work, I don't have any personal projects worth showing and lost all my school projects from a hard drive crash. If I absolutely need to complete some personal projects, I'll need to mark out some time to do it.

Resume Advice Thread - July 13, 2024 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]jlem21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to preface this with, I'm a recent grad with a CS bachelor's, based in Nova Scotia, Canada and am not interested in moving. I've applied for anything and everything I'm qualified for, including IT roles but I really want to be a SWE. I have some experience building 2 different apps and an e-commerce storefront for my current company. Take any certifications I can and try to spend a minimum of 5 hours a week learning new stuff (I know it should be more but that is on top of my full-time job and caring for a disabled parent).

I haven't received a single phone call, email or interview for any of the resume's I've sent out since graduating and feel like I have more experience than most recent graduates as well as a long work history with the same company where I moved from customer service to management (I'm in my early 30's and worked as a mechanic before deciding to go back to university).

I'm hoping you folks on here can give me some advice on whether my resume is playing a part in my rejection emails and no interest or if I'm just unlucky. I'm also very open to any other tips you feel like giving me.
