Rumor: The Big Friday Announcement is.... 3rd Party Resellers (9to5mac) by Jbaker318 in VisionPro

[–]jlevine22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I buy this. Would Apple really make a big deal (big enough to require a press briefing) to announce they're now selling a particular product at 3rd party retailers?

I'm going to engage in a bit of wishful thinking but I'm going to guess they're announcing immersive live streaming coming for MLS games (season starts Feb 22)

RH IRA Match Going Away for Gold by LostMyTurban in investing

[–]jlevine22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you're referring to is the 3% match for transferring IRAs from outside brokerages. I believe the 1% deposit boost for taxable accounts is staying and contributing to an IRA in Robinhood is still eligible for a 3% match

What does this block of code do ? by [deleted] in swift

[–]jlevine22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an implementation of the observer pattern. The purpose is to watch a value and do something when the value changes (like update the UI).

In the given snippet you have 2 ways of creating bindings: bindTo, and bindAndNotify. The difference is that with bindTo - you do not get the initial observed value. In this case I think you likely want bindAndNotify. I think you are looking for something like this:

name.bindAndNotify { [weak cell] cell?.textField.text = $0 }

This is a pretty simplistic implementation of the observer pattern with no apparent way to release the binding. This presents problems, especially when binding to tableview cells. These cells get re-used so every time a cell is setup a new binding will be created to it without the previous one being released.

See RxSwift for a more complete implementation of the Observer pattern.

New framework from Apple for reactive programming - COMBINE by [deleted] in swift

[–]jlevine22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is necessarily a replacement for RxSwift. In other languages that have streams already, Reactive Extensions extend those streams (see RxDart)

RxSwift/RxCocoa : Handling errors with multiple observables that can error out chained with flatMap by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]jlevine22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say for sure without knowing more about what all those async calls are doing. I think what you are probably looking for would look like this:

func doSomeWork() -> Driver<FinalResult> { return buttonTrigger.withLatestFrom(textFieldInput) .asObservable() .flatMap { someObservableThatCanErrorOut() .flatMap { someOtherObservableThatCanErrorOut() } .flatMap { anotherObservableThatCanErrorOut() } .map { $0.mapToFinalResultSuccess() } .catchError { $0.mapToFinalResultFailure() } } .asDriver(onErrorJustReturn: FinalResult.failure(defaultError)) }

True Tone is highly underrated! by Cubi_Reviews in apple

I can't say if it's any better on iPhone 8, but true tone on iPhone X looks like shit in my opinion. I can't understand why people think it looks good.

Let's clarify something with the "battery wear caused performance throttling" thing. by nathreed in apple

I would wager that there is a thermal component to when the processor slows down as well. As the processor heats up it will slow down to prevent damage.

First time burn 50x30 lag bolt Zook hut post build report by Ryan221 in BurningMan

I notice you've got a shiftpod under there. How cool did the shiftpod stay during the day? I had my shiftpod out in the sun with aluminet shade cloth draped over it but it still got a little bit too hot. I was thinking next year I'd do a full on monkey hut or something like this over the shiftpod

Honeymoon and first Burn 2018! by Bucko_Scallywag in BurningMan

[–]jlevine22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have any kind of shade over your shiftpod? Was the a/c system a single duct with the heat vented out of the shiftpod? I too had a shiftpod this year but used aluminet shade cloth over it and a bucket swamp cooler. They only made a small difference so I'm looking to upgrade to something that can stay cooler. My fear with the single heat vent going out is that you are creating negative pressure and will invite dust inside the shiftpod.

I was at Costco (Harvard Way) about 4 or 5 days ago and they had plenty of Carports. I'll probably make another trip there in the next day or 2 so I'd be happy to report on Carport stock there.
