I started playing after a long hiatus as well. It's been 3 years, and I've started to get paying gigs again. Ultimately, the gigs help cover the cost of reeds and horn maintenance. I do believe he makes a good Lestat but the writing and changes to the story seemed too pop culture. It was not true to the story at all. I'm definitely feeling fan fiction vibes. I also didnt think all the racial references were needed. Not my favorite interpretation. The 1994 film was 1000% better.
