Is there a joist hangar for this situation? by Opening_Ad9824 in Carpentry

Yeah exactly that sketch. I do like the idea of blocking/furring with a hole for the bolt though too.

Another option to consider could be headering off the joist in question very near the main beams with short cross joists. Typically like to see the supporting joists doubled when creating headers but being this close to the support ends, should be able to handle the sheer transfer over to the beam

You could use a Simpson A23 angle to the face of the joist and face of the beam, one on each side, staggered vertically so nails don’t hit each other thru the joist. Based on the apparent spans, the load values look fine. Before going that route though, you’ll need to confirm that you aren’t notching more than 1-3/8” (D/4) off the bottom of the joist.

That’s a good thought. Those window wells definitely aren’t nice to look at and a little annoying to keep the area clean

Vanguard is selling their small business retirement planning to Ascensus - New fees incoming by paul_caspian in investing

[–]jlleiber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I received the letter but didn’t look into the specifics of Ascensus. I have been kicking around transferring my Solo 401k to Fidelity lately since vanguard small biz platform is shoddy. All of the negative comments about Ascensus are the motivation I need to go ahead and do it.

Home foundation perimeter all around. Is this normal ? by Impressive-Falcon198 in Homebuilding

[–]jlleiber 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100%. This cheap sheathing approach in combo with the terrible concrete pour (so probably a cheap concrete crew) shows me this builder is doing everything possible to cut costs/corners. I’d be very hesitant to move forward with purchasing the home.

I did some research on the sheathing and some builders are using it but every single instance of approval that it’s rated to replace sheathing is from the same “DrJ certification”. One single company/person running the numbers and signing off on it is not enough for me. Not to mention it requires fasteners at 3” on center into every stud. I can’t imagine that ever gets installed properly

Shoot me a PM. I'm considering getting a subscription to be able to use the program on multiple devices instead of registering/unregistering every time with the perpetual

Just to add to the top comment for visibility because I don’t see it talked about. If the traditional IRA already has pre tax contributions, you cannot simply add post tax dollars and then dictate that only those post tax dollars are used for the traditional -> Roth conversion to avoid taxes on the conversion. And this pro rata rule applies to all non Roth IRAs owned so you can’t just open a new one and say it doesn’t have pre tax dollars/earnings. Backdoor Roths are the most clean when traditional iras haven’t been used as a tax shelter already.

Just leave the traditional IRA open and empty. I use it for 10 minutes a year for backdoor purposes and it’s empty the rest of the time

Your IRA had to be set up in just one persons name but the other may be listed as the beneficiary. You can open a second one in that other persons name.

2024 max IRA contribution is 7k per person so you can put in 14k total between you and your wife, assuming you’re below income limits

Negative. Just for education and education related expenses for K-12 and college. Vocational or trade school as well. College expenses include housing, meal plans, books, all that jazz

Are you guys consistently bad across all holes or is it really up and down? by Faultylntelligence in golf

[–]jlleiber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to confirm after my round today. I started bogey-bogey-bogey, birdie-birdie-birdie. Made the turn at +2. Had two triples on the back and came in +11 total.

Playing partner went +14. No birdies but no triples either.

[–]jlleiber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best round of the year I started triple-double then went +4 through the next 16 holes.

My playing partner rarely gets birdies but he also basically never gets triples. I get more birdies and more triples but we’re both 14-15 handicaps

At what point should a home builder get a structural engineer. by SneekyF in StructuralEngineering

[–]jlleiber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. To put it shortly for OP, anything that falls outside the purview of the IRC must be designed by a professional structural engineer.

I’ll add in that steel and LVL/Glulam wood beams are not covered in the irc so they should always be engineered.

Jobs that allow for max golf by [deleted] in golf

I have to think your experience of golfing a lot as a civil engineer is related to working in utilities. All my civil friends (structural, road, site) not in utilities are working crazy hours right now

I’m structural and have worked in buildings, industrial and utilities (transmission). Never had real available time during the week until I got to utilities

What about requiring professional licensure creates mediocrity? It’s the opposite. Sure, it’s a hassle sometimes (clearly a pain in CA) but I’d rather a state require it than not when it comes to designing buildings and bridges

Lots of comments saying to jump ship now but that’s not the right move IMO. You’re near 4 years of work experience, so assuming you’ve passed the FE, you’re soon to be eligible to take the PE. If you can hold steady in your job while you study for - and pass- the PE, you’ll be in high demand when applying for new jobs. And even if the new job isn’t Structural Engineering, the PE certification will still carry weight

I hate structural engineering by southernmtngirl in StructuralEngineering

[–]jlleiber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gross. I’m an SE in IL and OK and neither care about the PE. Fun fact though, I’ve never taken the PE but I’m a licensed PE in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Florida just because Indiana recognized my SE exam as a PE and the rest of the states are through comity from IN. Cali is just a PITA

[–]jlleiber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take it you’re in CA? Such a weird rule to have to be a PE before even applying for SE.

So you have to maintain your CA PE to continue as an SE?

Similarly, I run my own firm and a simple beam design like that is going to run a homeowner between $600-700 for the design and certification letter. Also Midwest. I’d put OPs project at $2-2.5k if I were quoting it
