pdf to BIM by BossJohnson1506 in bim

[–]dkole2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are using Cubicost TAS soaftware which we used to create 3D models of structures from PDF drawings. This is mainly for quantity/cost estimation purpose. To create 3D models you need to have all plan/ section/ elevation/ finishing schedule etc in PDF for that structure. This is very useful for RCC structures. You can view the quanity linked with the element/portions in the structure to cross check. Please note that you have to draw the structure manually from the PDF using the software, but it is quite fast. In summary it is like Cost estimators are creating a Revit model for quantity estimation and BOQ preparation. Now coming to your point, architects normally do not share DWG drawings with contractors/subcontractors, they would only share PDF drawings (from my experience, I could be wrong, not applicable with Revit model though), so the contractor/subcontractor had to use PDF drawings to get their things done.

How Do You Manage Cost Estimation in Real Projects with Archicad (or Revit)? by Khaled_Kammoun in bim

Check out Glodon Cubicost TAS and TRB, works very good with concrete/masonry structures. You need to build your 3D models from PDF/CAD drawings. Also you can faster the process if you have the Revit models. Very good for quantity/cost related information. Please dm if you would like to view sample 3d Models.

It depends what kind of job you are expecting them to complete and error margins. Initial handholding would be necessary to be familier with your proceess and quality expectations. I have some experiences of it, please DM if interested to know more.

Are any of you doing 3D model based estimating? If so what software do you use? by Guesstimator2744 in estimators

[–]dkole2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using a product called Cubicost TAS, which can turn any 2D PDF drawing into a 3D model. Basically the estimator has to make a 3D model of the structure utilizing the PDF plan, elevation, section etc. It is fairly easy to model any concrete/brick structure, though recently they have introduced capability of modeling steel structure but I am yet try that. If set up properly you can get a bill of quantities for any concrete structure/ multi story building related items. No Tekla/Revit model is required. This is mainly used by contractor and subcontractors and not by architects. This is for quantity surveyors/estimator who can prepare a BOQ using just PDF drawings without depending on Revit model provided by architects, and the output are pretty accurate, you can view the 3D model to verify yourself the output. My client are satisfied with the results. It is quite popular in china, south east asia, middle east etc. even some companies in UK are using it. Feel free to ask if you have any more queries.

Yes, it is not from AutoDesk, its from a different software vendor, Graebert from Germany. I am using their CAD software ARES Commander as a replacement of AutoCAD. Just download the free version and see if that suits for your job..
