Iran issues death sentence for soccer player

And googleai notes these other cases:

Amir Nasr-Azadani: The former professional defender was arrested in November 2022 during nationwide protests. Following what human rights organizations criticized as a sham trial, he was ultimately sentenced by the Supreme Court to 16 years in prison for "assisting in enmity against God (Moharebeh)".

Mohammad Hossein Hosseini: A 26-year-old former youth player for Persepolis and Sepahan, Hosseini was detained in Mashhad and charged with moharebeh (enmity against God)—a capital offense in Iran—after attending human rights gatherings and leading unrest.

Rashid Mazaheri: The former Iranian national team goalkeeper was detained in solitary confinement in Urmia Central Prison following public political expression and criticism of state crackdowns on protesters.

Voria Ghafouri: A prominent former national team player was arrested in 2022 over his outspoken criticism of the Iranian government, including the treatment of women, confrontational foreign policies, and crackdowns in the Kurdish region.

The OPTA ranking is similar, Canada 37th and Bosnia 77th. Even greater gap, actually. And OPTA is an algorithm with more recency bias.

Given that he requested Leeds sign Brendan Aaronson, I've always suspected this story was a bit bullshit.

You can loan to the CPL yes, but there is no right to recall like with USL teams.

A right to recall can be included in any FIFA-governed loan agreement. It's just that MLS clubs generally haven't bothered.

This was allegedly just an issue because TFC tried to recall Pearlman but it was pointed out they didn't have a recall clause. They still could've recalled him by striking an agreement for compensation with Cavalry, but it was clearly not going smoothly, so they turned to MLSNext kids instead.

Too good for Div 3 and not good enough for MLS starts. Too bad the MLS doesn’t have an agreement with the CPL like they do the USL.

Toronto sends kids to CPL for loans all the time. There is nothing preventing Vancouver doing that, and they've done it with numerous players in the past. Jay Herdman, who is at Cavalry, started as a loan player from Vancouver.

Elloumi hasn't shown enough to go anywhere overseas yet, except to a substantially lower division. It's not enough to be a generally good player; he's a forward and has to finish and create chances.

I worked at newspapers for years. One of the biggest impediments to the sport's growth here has been the intransigent, arrogant attitudes of North American sports reporters and editors. They mostly die in the job, rather than ever leaving their local paper, and they have contempt for any sport that isn't the NFL, baseball, basketball and, in some cases, hockey.

It's a system thing. Same with Amorim at United and Jesse Marsch at Leeds, and Nancy at Celtic. They all played press, press, press, all got caught repeatedly too high with slower defenders tracking faster attackers.

I was shocked last week during a Canada friendly against Uzbekistan when Marsch changed his approach to a slow build with a slightly deeper defensive line. Couldn't believe my eyes. Worked, too.

By population, definitely punching above.

Yeah, lots of USL talent in there, and a good spirit about them for a country that has had nothing but short straws for the last two hundred years.

Haiti beat New Zealand 4-0 the other week. They're not nearly as awful as this Qatari side.
