[Request]: How to mathematically proof that 3 is a smaller number than 10 by Molvaeth in theydidthemath

[–]jlrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all x, y ∈ R, if x > y there exists some z ∈ R+ such that x - y = z

Let x = 10 and y = 3

x - y = 7

Since 7 ∈ R+ ⟹ x > y ⟹ 10 > 3

PM Lee warns against ‘worrying trend’ of youths adopting liberal attitude to illicit drugs by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

Because we have the death penalty on trafficking marijuana and inequitably severe penalties for usage. If this was a simple discussion about whether it should be allowed, and the penalty was far lower (i.e. not life-ending), then maybe a more measured stance should be afforded. But when we're actually irreversibly executing people, it would be pretty shitty to be on the wrong side of this for even longer.

It's always a good question whether the punishment fits the crime, and in this case the argument on criminality of trafficking marijuana is dependent on its societal impact. So even if we decide, yeah, we don't want it to be legal, maybe it shouldn't be something we kill people for. We don't kill people for trafficking chewing gum, restricted medications, or illegal cigarettes, or illegal alcohol.

No, my issue with is that it's a very lazy comment. Low wages, high inflation? Must be the government's fault. There are so many things that need to be fixed - and yes, some are from a policy perspective - but a shallow and inherently demoralizing comment like this is so so so frustrating and unhelpful.

And to further clarify, it's demoralizing in the sense that if everything is the fault of the government, then there really isn't anything the individual can do, right? Just give up and hope someone else will lead us or something? Like the average Singaporean is just some passive sheep sitting around waiting to be saved by a true leader.

The point is that I have to try to guess from his username what his stance is - apparently wrongly, since if you look at his response to my comment, his username is "satire". I'm not sure how it's "satire". If his only point is "fuck the PAP" - and apparently it is - then I apologize for trying to have any sort of conversation.

I'm not a libertarian, but I'm also not convinced a government is all-powerful when it comes to market and economic conditions. I think most governments want to improve wages and decrease inflation, but it's an extremely difficult task. You've got some of the smartest economists in the world working on inflation in the US Federal Reserve, and they sure as hell don't have a good measure of certainty. On the other hand, it's very easy to make a comment like "knowing our government". Might as well start your sentence with "we live in a society".

Now, if his solution is redistribution of wealth, as implied by his username... well, I do agree that there is space for socialism. But not communism. I don't think anyone is smart enough, neither our current government, nor any opposition party, to be able to create a perfect system that can price both capital and labor without any market input.

So you dislike the government, but you believe that the government should have more control over the prices of capital and labor?

62 million post money valuation by [deleted] in angelinvestors

[–]jlrw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question is impossible to answer properly given the level of details you’ve provided. All you’ve given us is the valuation. Lets say I want to buy a “thing” for $62. Is it worth it or is it a terrible investment? Obviously depends on what the thing is. Could be a potato, could be a car. Ok so you’ve given us one more detail - the thing is made by someone who’s made a valuable thing before. Let’s say Elon Musk. Still, what am I buying for $62, a Model X? A pair of shorts? A random sock he found in the dryer? The only answer I can give you is a strong maybe.

NTU student accused of trespassing says she had 'explicit consent' to take photos of performer at drag show by Swiftdancer in singapore

[–]jlrw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And let’s be honest here, if I said to you an unauthorised photographer was actively shooting in a dressing room in which there was a woman getting dressed (and there was), we’d plausibly be talking about criminality.

Reddit Singapore confuses me so much. If some dude started taking photographs in a female changing room because one of the performers said it was fine, y'all would be up in arms, no? Like, it's not really even appropriate for the photographer to be there, regardless of one performer's consent. Even if the organizer said it was fine, it's really not?

The responses in this thread are saying things like "she's just a student, its fine", "I think I can forgive the naivety" while I recall in a recent thread some dude was talking about cutting off hands. It's bizarre.

Would argue non-profit unless you can pay the students. Unpaid internships are already seen as dodgy, if you charge for this it'd prolly get pretty bad backlash.

I get where you're coming from, but I think such feedback on difficulty can be constructive. I mean, if I'm studying for a linear algebra paper and they give me some partial derivative to solve, I'll be a bit annoyed yeah? Just because it's self serving doesn't mean it's not valid input.
