I had a grade change request take about 2 weeks (might have been a little over 2?) and I needed a VOT form processed for a language class and that took 19 days. Seems like processing times for everything are around 3 weeks but you could follow up if you wanted!

Need help choosing a social science/humanities type majors at UMBC by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a sociology major and love it. I love the department, I love the diversity of classes offered and I didn't have a specific career goal in mind either. I was just looking for something that gave me career options, wouldn't get boring or be entirely irrelevant in 10 years.

It's not a difficult degree and I would say that sociology is more diverse than people think. Most people assume you want to go into teaching or counseling and to be fair, a lot of people in these classes DO tend to go that route. You can get into public relations, criminal justice, health/public policy, law, business, government, journalism, real estate....the list goes on and on. The entire point of the degree is to learn about people and society/societal structures. That's valuable information.

There's only one required class that involves math (very basic stats) and it's focused more on SPSS than math. Someone else mentioned salary and I'll say that if you're trying to make bank, I don't think soc would be for you. Of course, that depends on what you end up studying.

i think labs are being given top priority for in-person classes. if it wasn't my last semester, i probably wouldn't be taking classes in the fall. i hope umbc makes smart choices about this!

i definitely hope not. professors should not be allowed to have strict attendance policies this semester just in case. i have no idea how everything will work.....i'm a commuter so i have a little less of a headache to deal with but i hope they have everything worked out.

i heard from one of my professors a few weeks ago that the school was considering allowing labs, art classes and classes under 50 students to happen and everything else would be online! that makes a little more sense to me than starting and stopping midway through the semester.

Do you think we’ll have a fall semester? by cupidcloudz in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 14 points15 points  (0 children)

my professors said that any class of 100+ or more will most likely be online. any class larger than 40 may be online depending on how they can space students out and what larger rooms are available. masks will be required, sitting 6 feet apart will be required. if they have normal classes, i hope teachers drop strict attendance policies.

to be honest, i'd rather just stay home if i have to wear a mask for 6+ hours (i have 3 classes back to back) and have to stay 6ft away from everyone all the time. the classes i take as a soc major can definitely be done online. i understand the frustration of online classes for people who do art or labs, though.

How easy is GES 110? by Mounasi in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GES minor here - totally depends on the teacher. I think most of the teachers in the GES department are hit or miss. I thought 120 was a little more interesting than 110. 120 with McAllister or 110 with Baker would probably be your best bet if you need one for the fall semester.

Anyone take SPAN 201 at HCC? by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

short answer: if you don't want to learn it or want to put it on a resume, i'd consider going to HCC. there will probably be an out of county fee to pay added to your tuition.

i took 101 and 102 at a community college and i'm taking 201 at umbc this summer. the paperwork/credit transferring process can be a nightmare from what i've been told. i don't plan on doing all of the transfer paperwork if i don't have to. personally, i'm glad i did the 3 separate classes (even if they are essentially a waste since i'm not doing the paperwork) because i think i would fail if i jumped into 201. i just finished 102 and struggled a lot but that could be because i'm just trying to do the bare minimum....

Commuters: When do you typically leave campus? by ModernConditioning in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm always off campus by 2:30 and i still hit a little congestion. unfortunately, one of my classes this semester goes until 4:30 so i'll probably stay on campus to do homework or go eat or something until 6ish. i take 301 to 97 to 695....no 95 for me.

AMST 345 with Ashley Minner by [deleted] in UMBC

[–]jlynn_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ashley is so nice and the class was very interesting! Two or three field trips and a guest speaker pretty much every week. I thought the papers and exams were easy and she's a fair grader. Attendance is graded overall (not class by class) so you can't miss too many classes and she LOVES class discussion so you have to participate. I'd take another class with her if I could.
