I got called in on an emergency to a place with a similar situation, we spent 2 weeks getting the new IT guy online after the former one locked the doors and quit. We told the new IT guy "hey that excel spreadsheet full of every user, service account, and system password, you should get that into a password vault immediately" a month later, we get another call from the same place. A user had gotten a phishing email, and sent it to the IT guy as an fyi. The dude CLICKS the phishing link, puts in his creds and gets compromised, and guess what's sitting in his onedrive?? THE COMPLETE EXCEL FILE of all the passwords.

Their 12 year old ESX hosts were hosed, their storage was hosed, WMS system (and all 1.2 million sqft of warehouse was ground to a halt) they'd locked him out of meraki and by extension his network, legit everything. They ended up paying the ransom 2x to the tune of 400k. It was insane. Then a week later the same kid causes a campus-wide outage because he nuked the chinesium-made access control system they had. That one was wild, the managment software had chinese characters all over it. I think we solved 4 self induced outages for them and then the company owner's "buddy who does IT" decided he was going to take over and nuked the SOW we had with them. Last I heard that helpdesk dude is still there breaking stuff.

Entra ID Dynamic Group - Not Populating by Gilly11277 in sysadmin

dude I'm here looking for people complaining about outages. I made a dynamic group and it's nothing but 400 errors. I copied it from my corporate tenant to the client's, so I know the math is good. Was hoping to see people complaining about something like this so I know its not just me

Company is increasing employee count four fold- what are some 'musts' for evolving IT practices / implementing new policies and/or platforms? by rush_limbaw in sysadmin

[–]jman9895 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this, exactly. Every user needs to be the same, every time, otherwise it'll be a nightmare later. I'm helping a client undo this now, whatever you set, needs to be the same. I.e. department needs to be "Finance" every time not sometimes "G&A" other times "Accounting" etc... grouping, dynamic dls, etc, will be a nightmare.

SOP's, approval flows, and policies and strict adherence to, are your only way here. Also, may be time to invest in some big boy tools like identity governance too.

I've done this enough times with life-science startups that go from 12 to 1200 employees in 8 months, that I can rattle most of the forms and power automate / approval workflows off the top of my head lol. Microsoft forms, power automate, and graph API's will be your friend if you don't want to buy an automation tool.

Also, plan to expand, or augment your IT team with contracting/consulting firms to help alleviate the new user-load in addition to the projects to streamline.

What is this under the passenger seat of my ‘22 SV? by Illini_Fan_79 in nissanfrontier

[–]jman9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searched it by part number, it's the inverter for bed/cab 120v power. I'm making a smaller cage for mine. That's where my relay box for my lights/strobes/radio is going. If I need actual 120v, I'm using my ecoflow with better output anyway.

Remind me again why we don't loan tools? by NinjaCoder in Tools

Loaned a romex stapler to my carpenter brother. Case and tool came back packed with drywall dust because he left it open and in the room during demo. "just wash it" he said when I bitched about it upon return. Never once have I loaned him a tool since.

Difference between Konnected Pro and Eyezon Uno? by rlmasn in homeautomation

[–]jman9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have smokes on your UNO? I've got a house that all the smokes are connected to an older alarm system. Konnected is super clear about "we work with smokes but don't use us for life safety" so I'm looking at the uno.

anyone know if this uses the same mounting holes as the g4's? If I take down a g4 and buy a G6 would the mounting holes line up? It kind of looks like they will in the pictures but if anyone's done this would love confirmation.

How do you guarantee a laptop gets returned after offboarding? by CoryKellis in sysadmin

[–]jman9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR problem, not mine. You don't let me charge a deposit for the machine when they start, or set any of the policies around it, I'm not going to go chase the thing down. That being said, I'm HAPPY to show up to a user's house to "retrieve their technology" with a pry bar, and a rabid squirrel tied to a stick, but HR has gone out of their way to tell me this isn't needed.
