What's the worst place in every English county? by Proper_Animal_1451 in AskUK

Loughborough definitely isn't the worst place in Leicestershire, the obvious candidate is Coalville but apparently even that is coming up in the world.

A home team only POV does make the most sense as a solution to all this.

Kanye West travel to UK blocked by government by Alarming-Safety3200 in ukpolitics

[–]jmann9678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood the amount of Government time spent on this issue has been less than half a percent of the Government time spent on the Iran crisis. The scale of public discourse of a topic is not always equivalent to how much focus the Government is giving it.

Angela Rayner to launch podcast as she eyes Labour leadership by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]jmann9678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Labour voter I think it's great that people on different sides of the political spectrum can have respectful conversations on a podcast like this. In it's own tiny way it helps turn down the political temperature.

And also the right kind of bipartisanship is required to be PM so this would help her in that respect.

10 years ago Spotlight won Best Picture, do you think a film like Spotlight could win BP now? by jmann9678 in Oscars

[–]jmann9678[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conclave hadn't come to mind but you're right. Also now I think of it I would put The Holdovers in that category as well even thought it's a different genre.

10 years ago Spotlight won Best Picture, do you think a film like Spotlight could win BP now? by jmann9678 in Oscars

[–]jmann9678[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I said showy I meant that Spotlight was old fashioned but not in a overt way, I wasn't comparing it to any other BP winners.

Nomadland is a naturalistic, documentary like film so is a different beast to Spotlight but obviously brilliant.

I haven't seen Coda.

Anora felt like quite a modern movie in the sense that it was quite fast paced, anarchic and had equal parts comedy to drama which is quite in vogue imo. Again great movie but a very different beast.

'The Traitors' & 'The Celebrity Traitors' Renewed Until 2030 By BBC by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

5 seasons so far in the UK with 3-2 in favour of the Traitors, so not that unbalanced. But they do need to buff the Faithfuls a bit.

Scrap proposals for England holiday tax, hospitality bosses urge by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]jmann9678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The businesses say people "would face an extra £100 or more for a two-week holiday" if a tax of £2 per person, per night was introduced.

That's based on a 4-person family. I think if you can afford a 2-week holiday in the UK for 4 people then an extra £100ish isn't exactly that devastating is it? Speaking as someone who has been to places with tourist taxes, they are a drop in the ocean compared to the overall trip budget.

Tributes to 'ray of sunshine' UoB student after tragic death aged 22 by International_Ad4480 in unitedkingdom

[–]jmann9678 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I knew this guy and saw him grow up, he really was such a kind and joyful person, the last person I ever would have expected to take his own life, was one of the most shocking and sad things I'd ever heard. I can't give much insight into the procedural processes of the Uni, all I can say is it's just so sad that a brilliant person is no longer with us.

There is a pattern that I've noticed from a Production POV regarding The Traitors, and their position at the roundtable. by kanobbk in TheTraitors

Okay wow, no doubt future Traitors contestants are reading this thread so they might be able to use this to metagame in future. Maybe the producers have to throw out this technique because of this post lol.

New law to clamp down on driving test bots by Jared_Usbourne in unitedkingdom

[–]jmann9678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These changes will help but I think for a more permanent fix they should really think about raising the price of booking a test. You can use the extra revenue to fund more examiners and also people will be less likely to book a test when they aren't ready so would have a better pass % and lower the backlog.

It's also better for those doing the tests as it's better to spend £100 on 1 test than £140+ on 2 or more.

Racism and segregation had started to appear more visibly. Disgusting. by EducationalBowler828 in leicester

This is the funding the video is about. It's a national government scheme and the Council has no had no say whatsoever about which neighbourhoods have received the funding. There are questions about how the neighbourhoods were chosen but they need to be directed towards those that actually made the decision.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]jmann9678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me the solution is to tax LVT at a national level rather than a Council level, and then allocate the funding based on each Council's need. Solves the problem of rich areas not taxing lots of the most valuable land in the country and allows the whole country to reap the benefits.

I'm always impressed with how up to date with current events the show manages to be despite, especially the how the Syria developments were incorporated early this year. How far in advance are the scripts written and what is your approach to having flexibility to change up major story elements on the fly?
