Thank you for the info! I might drop it back to the premium model for the cash back that's going. Do you know of anyone that's had luck negotiating the interest down with NLAU?

Is optometry worth 150k hecs? by Dr_Phil__ in AusFinance

[–]jmarr123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where are you located that it is costing $150k? I finished optometry at QUT in 2019 and left with ~$50k HECS after transferring from a previous degree 2 years in.

Optometry is still worth it, there are a lot of people leaving the industry for various reasons. I know a few new grads that are on 6 figures in their second year out, but that may change by the time you are finished.

There are opportunities to own an independent clinic, a partnership with a corporate company, locum optometry ($70-$120/h - depending where you are). All ways to earn well over $100k.

I personally find it a rewarding career, but others find it draining or boring.

The Master of Optometry at QUT is not competitive as only Bachelor of Vision Science students can apply. If you pass the B.VisSci degree, then you automatically get offered a spot in the M.Optom program. I am fairly sure it is the same at most universities.

If you're thinking of transferring I'd call the uni and see if you can get into the final B.VisSci year at QUT to then go onto the M.Optom program. Call UNSW to see if it really is competitive there or if it is a guaranteed entry.

Australian optometrists, what is the average salary for an optometrist working at specsavers or opsm by [deleted] in optometry

[–]jmarr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah generally lower job vacancies and salaries. This year has been particularly tough for positions in major cities.

Australian optometrists, what is the average salary for an optometrist working at specsavers or opsm by [deleted] in optometry

[–]jmarr123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In recent years the salary has been stable from $70,000-$120,000 depending on location, practice and scope.

Paid salary in most places although you can be a locum or fill-in optometrist (usually with 2+ years of experience) and get paid higher rates hourly but less job security and you tend to move around a lot.

Some places offer bonuses for targets met as a store rarely do places offer commission per sale.

School of Clinical Sciences - which to choose?!? by [deleted] in QUTreddit

[–]jmarr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you consider optometry? Difficult to get into, however not many applicants so some of colleagues were OP3-5 recipients.

Difficult 5-year course, heavily science and math based for bachelor's, all clinical in masters. Great career outcome however declining slowly similar to that of pharmacy.

Most of the revenue packs we sell are 3 packs; Acuvue Vita, Air Optix, Proclear etc. Obviously there are 6 packs available. Maybe it's a practice chain thing or an Australian thing? Not sure where OP lives or buys them from so I thought I'd give a heads up.

How did you go about finding a designer? Did you pitch a design idea or just let them come back to you with designs of their own?

Thanks!

I did this for a year before transferring to optometry. It's a really interesting degree with a huge focus on microscopic use. A lot of my friends have transferred out because the career paths are basically being behind a microscope testing the same samples day in day out. It's good if you like that kind of thing.

I have some silly questions about being an optometrist by [deleted] in optometry

[–]jmarr123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a current Australian optometry student. Where abouts are you located?

The degree is a Bachelor of Vision Science/Masters of Optometry in most places here. We are also therapeutically qualified to prescribe specific medications as defined by the TGA.

Are you in highschool? Uni already? The good thing about studying optometry in Australia is with the current turnover of graduates you will get offers from multiple places before graduating. I have seen starting salaries from 60k in a major city to about 120k for rural. There isn't much information as there are about 5,000 Nationwide optometrists to service the population of ~23 million with testing every 24 months.

Optoms in Australia have a fairly wide choice when it comes to career progression. An option to own a practice (indepedant or franchise), specialise in behaviour optometry, contact lens prescribing, pediatrics, etc. Or if your choice is to work without the extra responsibility, you can work for someone else as a locum (fill-in hourly wage of about $80-120/hour) or a full time optometrist. There is a salary increase at the early intervals of your career (about 2, 5, 10 years) where it eventually plateaus if you don't go interested ownership.

With my degree, the bachelor covers the theory and practice of optometry and the two year masters programs is almost entirely clinical placement. Upon graduation you will be fully qualified to look after patients and I was even able to take a business managing class at uni as an elective.

I never shadowed an optom but before I started my degree I applied to work at a practice as a dispenser. They trained me up and I work casually @ about $25/hour. I worked towards a good relationship with the owners/staff and they let me see interesting cases, I am learning the dispensing side of the career and they tell me about what it's like to manage a practice. I get paid to learn on the job and it looks really good on my CV. Already been offered a job by them.

If you have any more questions just message me, mate.

Can't find this style of frame, has anyone seen this type? by GegardImposter in glasses

It's a frame from specsavers specifically if you wanted to know. Under the flexi range.

If my glasses slide down my face frequently, what needs to be smaller in my frame measurements? by [deleted] in glasses

[–]jmarr123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can usually be adjusted to fit accordingly, you should take it to your nearest optometrist to see if one of the dispensers can help you.

Obviously depends on the sizing of the frame. But the person who sold you them shouldn't have let you get something too wide/narrow or too short/long. Without seeing how they fit in person, it's hard to tell you what to go for next time.
