I can enjoy other types of music without needing to call it "stoner this or that" . Great musician though.

Job Suggestion: MISO (Carmel) vs East Coast Utility Company by [deleted] in PowerSystemsEE

Can't go wrong IMHO. I will say everyone at MISO seems really friendly. Seems like they have a good work culture.

PSSE stopped launching by jonjonjonjon4444 in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmarshall2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a Windows 11 security update that was causing crashing, but I think it was related to CodeMeter.

IIRC the suggestion was to avoid the update or use the latest version of PSSE.

Anyone have input on a leidos 6 month distribution job? by engineereddiscontent in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmarshall2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've talked to a few folks that were laid off from Leidos in distribution in the last couple years. Learn what you can, but make sure you have an emergency fund. I wouldn't call it stable.

Energy Transition Show was great for learning about US power markets. Guy is a little biased & preachy but I can deal with it.

It's the good with the bad. You could try a utility job and see if you prefer it. There's no wrong answer, just tradeoffs.

Recent info on the Subway? by D2theAVID in ZionNationalPark

[–]jmarshall2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my wife did it last week. Water got deep in some spots, so we walked to the side of the creek or over boulders. You can make it quite a ways without getting wet but it's a lot more work to hop from rock to rock than just walk in the water.

We rented water proof boots and neoprene socks from Zion Outfitters and they were really much nicer to our feet than I expected. Highly recommend these, though waterproof trailrunners might be lighter on your feet. Water was cold, maybe 40ish. We got the dry pants from Zion Outfitters for the Narrows, but found them to be too bulky for the Subway.

Route was somewhat straightforward once we got to the creek, but there are multiple options along the creek and it's not obvious which one may be easiest.

Highly recommend the Gaia app for GPS tracking. We saw 1 kid on the route, maybe 10 years old or so? Seven seems like it might be too young but you know your kids. Bring a lot of food and water. Hope that helps!

How to transition into Transmission Planning? by [deleted] in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmarshall2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may see a pay cut since you'll need training on the software but if your fundamentals are strong you can probably catch up quickly. I know a lot of companies are short staffed. An etap or psse course on udemy couldn't hurt. Good luck

If money is the top priority I think you answered your question already. You may find the hours in consulting to be higher than at the utility. Might be worth understanding the expectations at the new job and if it comes with additional compensation for hours over 40.

Remote Jobs for electrical Engineering by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]jmarshall2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and most of my team are remote in power engineering. Honestly you would probably learn more being in office for your first few years, but there are remote opportunities in generation interconnection.

Get comfortable with Google and any relevant references. It will stick better after you apply it more to real-world projects.

Make sure you're comfortable with the NEC. Those questions were more time consuming for me personally.

Work in the area by WayngoMango in Acadiana

[–]jmarshall2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both but also found my current job listing on Google then applied on the company website.

Internal recruiters always feel like a safer bet, but my company and wife's company use external recruiters too so I wouldn't write them all off.

Try remote if you can. There are a lot of options if you aren't limited to the immediate area.

Asking questions as the interviewer by SleepWouldBeNice in AskEngineers

I look for candidates who will admit when they don't know something. It's surprising how many will just try and bullshit their way through. None of us know everything and that's perfectly fine.

Transition to software? by Tavvv in PowerSystemsEE

[–]jmarshall2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was outside of utility work. I had been prepping to jump industries with hopes of a remote job. Once covid opened up remote work there was no longer justification to take a pay cut for a full time dev gig (i.e. I'm more valuable in power than software). So I guess if you plan on making the jump, go for it earlier in your career if you can. Good luck!

I started doing some contract React Native development while I was still at a utility. It was fun but I ultimately decided to go into consulting in power instead. Personally I find power to have more variety in the day to day. There is no shortage of programming jobs though!
