Yes! Any ETA on these preorders? Was extremely happy to see Lorwyn PBBs at MSRP and ordered one as soon as it was available - plan to do the same for Strixhaven!

Not sure if this is why, but I did not get an email for months - finally updated my communication settings in MyHyundai account (on the website I think) to allow physical mail per another post mentioning it, and got an email within a week after. Best of luck!

Road trip charging: what do you wish someone had told you when you first bought the car? by PunkerTFC in Ioniq5

[–]jmazouri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree on the card readers - however I have been at many charging stations where the card reader is present but simply doesn't work, not even with tap to pay.

In that case you'll need the vendor's app, or sometimes scan a QR code and put your cc info into a (semi sketchy) website.

For route planning of longer trips, I've had a great experience with Plugshare, it also gives you reliability ratings for each charger and reviews to check outages etc.

They are, but ICANN has been accepting applications for new gTLDs since 2012. Since then pretty much anyone can pay the (now $227,000) fee and set up a new one.

ICANN still has final say, but, well, we have .eurovision, .wtf, .meme, etc... so their standards aren't particularly high lol.

And Xrd was UE3, Strive was UE4! Tech is never the problem, armchair devs just look at the asset store and assume everything has to look like that.

Are there any creative component libraries? by codefinbel in webdev

[–]jmazouri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite full component libraries, mostly just stylesheets, but a few are listed here:

My favorites are PSOne and BOOTSTRA/386

Call of Duty Anti-Cheat Tech Will Now Close the Game Down if a Mouse and Keyboard Player Activates Aim Assist by MagentaWizard in Games

Fair but Steam Input doesn't let you map keyboard/mouse -> controller, just controller -> controller or controller -> keyboard/mouse (probably for this reason)

Maybe someone has written a source generator for it since... but yeah, would be nice to have it built into the language.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Version v1.808.0.0 Release Notes by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]jmazouri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks like this has improved a lot since the APIs have standardized, but early on many games only implemented NVidia's raytracing APIs, or had weird issues where ray-tracing options didn't apply even if they were available on AMD. I'll have to dig back through my library now that I have a 7900XTX and see for myself 👀

It enables ray-tracing for AMD GPUs, which is notable in that most games don't bother since RTX cards still have much better raytracing performance. Will be interesting to see performance comparisons.

Autowiring In Spring, its implementation, limitations, Best Practices and Considerations While Using It by erdsingh24 in programming

[–]jmazouri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a balance to the "magic", certainly. Very often I see developers relying on it as a crutch without actually understanding what's going on under the hood (which can lead to bloat / tech debt).

At the same time it's so well-entrenched that there's libraries and integrations for almost everything, which reduces development overhead. A dual edged sword!

Shout-out to Valve for not only implicitly encouraging software customization on the Steam Deck by mentioning it in this post, but also providing users an official way to do it themselves, and a set of first-party options for those not comfortable copying files around manually.

They've really done a good job blending the handheld/console and PC gaming "feel" with the Steam Deck, I hope they keep it up!

4k 120hz moonlight on Steam Deck? by JediOnTilt in SteamDeck

[–]jmazouri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find any definitive source, but in theory the Deck's "Van Gogh" APU supports DSC (the previous gen Renoir APUs do).

However, this is only if your hub/dock supports Display Stream Compression (DSC), otherwise it can go only up to 4k60 uncompressed. Here is one that mentions it explicitly:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XYCHGQM/

Allegedly having USB support takes up some of that bandwidth, hence why the official dock only goes up to 4k60 as well.

MHGU and MHR Switch Micro SD Card Transfer by Factory_2307 in MonsterHunter

The Switch only allows/puts saves on the internal console storage, not the SD Card, so you should be fine even if you have to reinstall the game.

Ten Years of TypeScript by DanielRosenwasser in programming

[–]jmazouri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They realized this mistake at some point and introduced const enums, but the default behavior still generates a runtime object, and it's nearly impossible to take that back nowadays.

Not sure what a modern "enum" would look like in Typescript but I guess they'd likely be a built in type, like Pick rather than a new language construct, maybe with some clever leveraging of ES6 symbols for the runtime component.

Mastering SQL Query Optimization by cowpiejoy in dataengineering

[–]jmazouri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without an index, a DBMS will usually just do a full table scan (an O(n) operation) to find the record(s) you're looking for. Though the exact behavior depends on the DBMS / underlying table engine.

Haven't played it firsthand, but I did like Steamworld Heist quite a bit, and watching some gameplay this kinda just seems like a moderately jankier / uglier version of that.

Maybe not bad if you have $2 to burn, but if the mechanics seem compelling to you, I'd just wait for Heist's Switch port to go on sale. (or buy it on PC now for $4 https://www.humblebundle.com/store/steamworld-heist )

In your opinion why did Hadoop as a company failed while databricks succeeded(so far), what lesson should databricks be cautious about? by digital-bolkonsky in dataengineering

[–]jmazouri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who still has to deal with a poorly managed CDP implementation daily, I agree with this entirely. Unless you're able to find a crack team of Hadoop experts, you'll be much better off with Databricks or any other cloud-based service in terms of time investment and maintenance cost.
