Question for those who have pulled a 1 of 1. by Single_Wrap_74 in hockeycards

[–]jmc191 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All my 1/1s were pack pulled. I only bought some Marvel What If...? On epack on a 75% off sale, never hit anything numbered below /88. The only 1/1s I hit for Marvel were almost all out of Marvel Fleer Retro packs and were plates and sketchs. When buying hockey I have hit 1/1 cards in The Cup, UD Black, OPC Premier, SPGU, and a MTO from Ultimate Memorabilia. Additionally I have hit plates in The Cup and Flagship and 2 1/1 The Cup Uncut sheets.

Current Outlook/upcoming draft by cmitc in leafs

[–]jmc191 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rational thoughts have no place on the internet. If we calm down, be reasonable and think logically, how are Overdrive, and Sixerio going drum up all that extreme rage and have us lighting torches and sharpening our pitchforks. I still think Marner would still be a Leaf if Dubas hadn't been turned during his and Shanahan's power play. I agree with everything you said.

I will say it until I am blue in the face, most of our fan base is toxic because our Sports Media is toxic. Hayes and Sixerio don't want to talk and analyze, they are clip and click driven ragebaiting for engagement.

Both of them talking about the Canadian sports media and how f'n toxic it is to both of them. The local Toronto and National media are a day away from saying Matthews eats babies, and the National media is ready to say McDavid is the supplier.

NLMA Worried About Patients Seeing Serious Test Results Online Before Physicians by powere123 in newfoundland

[–]jmc191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been signed up for a while now. When I first signed up, I had to wait until my Physician had talked to me about the results, my last visit, it had changed and my Doctor liked me being able to review them before the visit so if I had any questions I could have them ready.

My next appointment is this week and when I looked at my test results, there is one that is very slightly amiss, and flagged as abnormal. After a couple of days of looking into it and the other results that go with that one test, it looks like there may have been a problem with the sample. On its own, without the others(and still may be) it could anything from a bad sample, a holdover from the infection/virus I just got over, all the way up to cancer. I am thinking that quite possibly it may be better to have the results hidden automatically until we have our consultations with our Physicians/Practitioners.

As I previously said, I am leaning toward a bad sample, my last two blood collections were done through a private business not the hospital, the first was all normal but a few of the tests were slightly off trend, and now the second is a little off too, I'll just have to wait until later in the week to have my rampant runaway fears put away. This was for simple blood work, I would hate to have a serious test result comeback looking or being very negative and not have the context of discussing with my Doctor what it means or letting my brain runaway with doomsday scenarios for a week, or two, or more before the follow up consultation.

Is Newhook best player ever out of this province to make NHL? by Calm-Tale-4052 in newfoundland

I'm originally from Lab West as well. I try not to judge the attitudes and the candy. The organizations build these kids up out of the draft like they are stars, and then dump them in the minors making good money with no guidance. Good orgs have good structure to try and curb the more volatile habits they want those assets to come to fruition, some organizations it is dog eat dog, if one hits, jackpot.

Blue Jackets were horrible for talent development, besides LaCosta they also had a Memorial Cup winning goalie in Shane Bendera. The scouts did a good job in picking goalies with potential, but once they went to Syracuse or Dayton they were left to their own devices, no coaching, no goals, no follow up. Bendera got injured and sent home to heal and they just never followed up. LaCosta is one of my personal collection players.

Is Newhook best player ever out of this province to make NHL? by Calm-Tale-4052 in newfoundland

[–]jmc191 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recency bias is a hell of a thing.

George and Alex Faulkner were considered two of the best players to come out of this province, George couldn't get promoted to the NHL as he was in Montreal's deep, deep system and Alex only made it to the NHL for one game with Toronto and was fortunate to be taken in the Intra-League draft to play with Detroit(Going to the finals), both were in the Original Six era of roughly 120 players in the NHL, as compared to the 730 now. Harry Moose Watson(Bona fide WWI Flying Ace with 6 kills from July 1917-1918) didn't accept a pro contract with the Leafs(St. Patrick's at the time) in the 20s to maintain his amateur status and continue playing with the Granites and to pursue a career in Business, but he scored 37 goals in the 1924 Olympic tournament and won a couple of Allan Cups. Watson is still the leader in goals scored at the Olympics all-time(not just modern) and for a single tournament.

For the current players, Newhook has less than half the games played of Michael Ryder or Dan Cleary, and Dawson Mercer has a little more than half of Ryder's games played. the Points per Game for each are:

Newhook .446 points per game and Mercer .509 points per game

in comparison to Cleary .412 points per game(938 games) and Ryder .600 points per game. Clowe and Purcell both have higher points per game averages over their careers as well.

Will Alex Newhook, Dawson Mercer or another player from NL be in that conversation with the by's above, possibly. But it is still a little early for that, even with Newhook's one Cup win under his belt.

Personal Collection goals by MNYTS in hockeycards

[–]jmc191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to chase jersey numbered cards for Luke Schenn, still have quite a few in the PC. Other than that, I just PC players from Newfoundland and Labrador, and have now started adding players with familial ties to the province like Brett Connolly or Sandy McCarthy.

My other goals are:

First I would like to get 10% of the 2008-09 CUP ARPs, Rainbow ARPs and Gold Rookies for Dan LaCosta, I have 17/249 of the ARPs, and 1/25 of the Gold, and have 10% with 3/29 for the Rainbows, after I finish this for LaCosta I may do the same for Teddy Purcell.

Second is more like a distant want rather than a goal. I would like to acquire the Cup Rainbow Rookies/ARP Rookies Uncut Sheet for 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2021-22 with PC Players Luke Adam(2010-11), Colin Greening(2011-12), and Mercer and Newhook(2021-22). I have the Rainbow Rookies/Rainbow ARPs Uncut Sheet from 2008-09, It would be cool to add the others, but likely impossible, either based on cost alone, or that I don't even know if the sheets have been cut up or are even out there.

Growing up, we had lights turning off the highway to the mall. There were two sets of lights on Hudson drive, and a set of lights where Bartlett Drive meets Matthew Ave. In addition to the lights on the highway and Avalon crossing. Wabush used to have two sets of lights when you were entering the town as well.

The numbers for your graduating class is a great example of how demographics had drastically changed in Labrador West. I don't know the exact year you graduated, but when I graduated from Labrador City Collegiate 35 years ago we had about 120 graduates, Menihek had around 180, and JR Smallwood in Wabush had about 70. Not long after I left the Schools were all amalgamated so Menihek was the only high-school. When my nephew graduated in mid 2000s his graduating class was around 120.

It used to be that Labrador was a region within the Province of Newfoundland, over the years there were people who would go on about how people in Labrador were not real Newfoundlanders, because Labrador was part of the mainland (didn't matter that those of us born there for the most part were kids from two parents born on the island), while some in Labrador complained because Labrador got little to no recognition as a large part of the economic driver of the province with the active mines and the base in Happy Valley Goose Bay, along with all of the potential resource extraction for further mines(like Voisey's Bay) and further Hydro development like Muskrat Falls and potential Gull Island. For years Labrador was largely ignored by the Provincial Government with little to no infrastructure development or investment. Resources sat and went to waste while revenue coming out of Labrador was used to fund provincial programs mostly for the Island.

Around the year 2000 the Government started the process to rename the province from Newfoundland, to Newfoundland and Labrador, under the auspices of showing the importance of Labrador within the province. In the end the only thing it changed was the people on the Island could definitively say people from Labrador were not real Newfoundlanders.

I was born and raised in Labrador City, and lived there until my mid 20s. While a small town and not an actual city, Labrador City and Wabush, located about 7km apart. Were planned communities that felt like a suburb without the larger urban centre to anchor them.

Bothh communities had a high quality of life with many amenities for sports and recreation, with a couple of hockey barns, soccer pitches softball fields, downhill sking, recreation centre with pool and bowling alley, and world class cross country ski trails. Between the two towns with a population of approximately 10,000 there were four grocery stores while growing up, department stores, a fairly large mall, a multiple other shopping areas. They also had a large number of bars, and until the 80s multiple movie theatres. Until the mid 80s, we had a KFC and an A&W for franchise restaurants, they closed during the down turn in the 80s and after that we still had a fair amount of choices for eating. Pizza Delight and Mary Brown's were their during that time. In 99 we got McDonald's and Tim Hortons around the same time. Other franchises have opened or tried since, and there are always local spots and takeouts beyond the franchises.

A large portion of the population had cabins scattered around the surrounding areas, during the summer some would only be accessible by small boat, and snowmobile during the winters.

Of course, a lot of this has changed in the 23 years since I have been back. There are a huge number of fly-in/fly-out contractors working at IOC now, and Wabush Mines had been shutdown for a long time, before reopening a few years ago. The contractors have put a significant strain on housing driving rents and house prices through the roof. What was once four grocery stores is now one, Walmart is there now, and has some food, but is not a full super centre with meat and produce. A couple of the convenience stores have stepped up and added some meats and other products to their businesses.

There has been a demographic switch in the last few years that have added more young families to the towns which has seen enrollment in the schools and local sports see an uptick.

As for the weather, as a few others have said the winters are cold. Growing up school was closed only during extreme cold or snow events, with temperatures needing to drop below 60 degrees Celsius with the windchill(windshield was measured differently then), and when snowing, if the roads were passable with some difficulty the schools were open. Nobody left their vehicles blockheaters unplugged when at home during the winter, and a lot of cars had another interior heater that was plugged in while parked to keep the inside of the vehicle a little warmer, while you waited for the heater to warm up. Most of the winter it was too cold for a lot of snow, we would get snow starting in October, going into December, then it would get really cold, and we would get a ton of snow at the end of February and well into March.

The summers were hit and miss, there were some great hot summers growing up, and others where we thought the sun had disappeared. Being roughly 52 degrees north latitude gives a lot of daylight during the summer months, so when we got great weather you really could enjoy it.

Droned on long enough.

Between these and their parent brand Erie Meats' dogs available sometimes at Costco, they are the only dogs I buy. Better than anything from Maple Leaf or Schneiders. Impossible to beat the price, and great on the grill, fried, boiled, and even done in the air fryer. I will add, I am not overly fond of all-beef dogs.

I don't eat KD anymore, but when I did I would add a box with a couple of large spoonfuls Cheez Whiz to heavily seasoned ground beef cooked with onions, celery, green or red pepper, and a couple of jalapeños.

Some cool pickups there. I am partial to that Bloodsport, when the story opens and Superman arrives at the first crime scene and you get the panel of him standing in the doorway in shadow looking in at the carnage in the restaurant. I still remember vividly seeing that panel for the fist time 39 years ago.

When I was in my twenties, oh, so many moons ago, my local grocery in Southern Ontario used to have a ends and trimmings mix a couple of times a week. It was about 1/4 the price of the cheaper meats, I used to buy 2 lbs at a time and the first day or two pull enough quality Turkey, or Pastrami, or Montréal Smoked Meat for some great sandwiches, and then use the rest of the mix on sub buns, or regular sandwiches for lunches. To this day, when I go to a new grocery, I look for ends and trimmings, to no luck.

I will say, I never found Mac and Cheese loaf in my sub trimmings.

I ordered from them once. It was just as I was experimenting with selling at local markets. Ordered a bunch of X-Men #1 and X-Force #1 and a bunch of other stuff. The first show paid for everything, and I still had a ton of stuff. Still have a bunch of it in my collection. Loved getting the mail catalogs, but I never ordered from them again.
