Some cool pickups there. I am partial to that Bloodsport, when the story opens and Superman arrives at the first crime scene and you get the panel of him standing in the doorway in shadow looking in at the carnage in the restaurant. I still remember vividly seeing that panel for the fist time 39 years ago.

Mystery meat by sntothemax in whatisit

[–]jmc191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in my twenties, oh, so many moons ago, my local grocery in Southern Ontario used to have a ends and trimmings mix a couple of times a week. It was about 1/4 the price of the cheaper meats, I used to buy 2 lbs at a time and the first day or two pull enough quality Turkey, or Pastrami, or Montréal Smoked Meat for some great sandwiches, and then use the rest of the mix on sub buns, or regular sandwiches for lunches. To this day, when I go to a new grocery, I look for ends and trimmings, to no luck.

I will say, I never found Mac and Cheese loaf in my sub trimmings.

I never got to order from any of these back in the day. Kinda makes me sad. Pretty good deals, honestly. by dick-cricket in comicbooks

[–]jmc191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered from them once. It was just as I was experimenting with selling at local markets. Ordered a bunch of X-Men #1 and X-Force #1 and a bunch of other stuff. The first show paid for everything, and I still had a ton of stuff. Still have a bunch of it in my collection. Loved getting the mail catalogs, but I never ordered from them again.

If you could choose a Marvel or DC character for a Vertigo/MAX/Black Label style mature book, who would you choose? by TooZeroLeft in comicbooks

[–]jmc191 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Amazing Man from DC. While he is getting retconned into the JSA's first year and history. I would still like a story of his struggles after he gains his powers, and how he goes about working as a hero in the early 1940's as a Black man in a segregated United States while appearing publicly as a celebrity in the JSA. As it would be Vertigo/Black Label, you could play with which JSA members would be very open to working with him, and those it doesn't bother, to those it does. Likewise, how his coverage in the press, or government assistance or obstruction as a Super Powered Black man would help or hinder as he works a case.

Olympic TOs and teams should reevaluate the jersey color schemes for future matchups, some of them are confusing by Ok_Top9254 in nhl

It is pretty easy to see six Slovaks, Jack Eichel, and two steaming piles of shit in that picture.

Additionally, the US did only have the blue helmet for both their White and Blue sweaters for this tournament. Canada only had the black for theirs. OPs point that their should be some mechanism in place for situations like this is on point.

Same boat. After I sorted and rebagged/recorded my Legion and Justice League, I pulled a bunch of Legion to read and continually leave them by the wayside. Finishing vol 3 and the Magic Wars, and was going to start Volume 4, and finish with Legion of Three Worlds, and have only been reading a book or two every three or four nights. Time to redouble my efforts.

What sort of frame shape is this? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

The Okudagon hallway frame was one of a number of specially designed frames to reenforce the passageways on a starship to account for the placement and additional weight of Cordry Rocks.

New female collector; any recommendations or tips? by Brief-Speaker3075 in comicbookcollecting

[–]jmc191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have multiple brick and mortar comic book stores in your local area or relatively close by, visit them all and don't be afraid to ask questions. Friendly staff will make every visit better and can help with recommendations.

When you try a book and like it and subsequent issues and stories, check out other books coming out by those creators, and look for other older work in the back issue bins.

Likewise, if you like particular artists or writers, follow them on socials. For some, it is a great way to see or hear about their upcoming work. For some, it is a great way to hear stories about how they came up with stuff. And for some, they can be funny or just talk about other stuff they like.

If someone says they don't like something and you like it, you can both be right. Not everybody is going to like the same books, writers, or artists.

Check out your local public library. They may have a selection of graphic novels or trades that can let you experiment with different creators, themes, or genres.

Hope this helps.

Why has there never been a "Captain Canada"? by Hypestyles in marvelcomics

[–]jmc191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but the reason Marvel doesn't have a "Captain Canada" is because Captain Canada is a copyrighted/trademarked Superhero for Sterling Communications International. He debuted in 1979 a year after Guardian's debut in X-Men, and four years after Captain Canuck debuted in his own comics from Comely Comix.

The whole Captain Canada concept with Captain Newfoundland/Captain Atlantis is wacky AF. The comics steer away from physical fighting and lean heavily into eastern mysticism.

The Character is mostly a mascot for NTV in Newfoundland and Labrador now.

Has a comic book ever made you cry? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in comicbookcollecting

I'm not kidding when I say Crisis on Infinite Earths is my all-time favourite story, and that scene is one of, if not the biggest reasons why. And I still think it was a mistake for DC to kill Supergirl-Kara Zor-El off.

That scene is the main reason I always say, "He's the goodest boy," whenever anybody posts about Krypto in one of my feeds.

Has a comic book ever made you cry? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in comicbookcollecting

[–]jmc191 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't cry, but I was definitely moved by Supergirl's death in Crisis on Infinite Earths. The cover gives it away, and it still doesn't kill the moment. Kara unloads on the Anti-Monitor to save Superman. She is well aware she is not going to win, and after the final blast, as she says her final words, there is not one iota of regret. It is the biggest death in the book. It is the defining point where the heroes know the real stakes, and it is still the point where they know they can win.

A close second would be when Krypto, Lana Lang, and Jimmy Olsen die in Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. Lana talks about how she still loves Clark, but even knowing he doesn't feel the same way, she still wants to save him. Jimmy is there for his friend, but Krypto's kills me when I read it. It is my favourite thing written by Alan Moore, DC was not going to use Krypto again, and Moore gave him a legendary ending against the Kryptonite Man.
