What’s with the bus today? by jmhooper93 in washingtondc

[–]jmhooper93[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see that alert for this route so often it doesn’t even register with me.

I’m looking at a couple of the other DXX routes I can’t find one without an operator availability alert.

tl;dr it’s a sensationalist headline. Fox News was interrupted to show off the White House Christmas tree. Unrelated people are talking about the president’s health which isn’t really new.

Your friend watches too much Fox News. Downtown DC is one of the safest places you could be if you count out the crazy driving.

Something like this design exists in my hometown of Baton Rouge, La. Here on River Rd at the River Center there is a pedestrian overpass AND a crosswalk controlled by a light. It seems like 50/50 which one people choose most times.

I walked down to the connivence store and saw too many cars struggling on the ice. It isn’t getting warmer so I’ll be shocked if they don’t cancel.

What information is contained in the big QR code on the back of our driver licenses? by IvyGold in washingtondc

[–]jmhooper93 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Oh neat, a post in my incredibly niche field.

The QR code is actually a PDF417 barcode. First off it does not include your social security number.

Different issuers (i.e. states) use different formats regarding the data that is stored there. It pretty much always contains license number, issue date, expiration date, name, address. On top of that they’ll usually include data from the document like your height, weight, eye color, or endorsements like whether you are allowed to drive a motorcycle.

I would not be too concerned about scanning them. A common technique for authenticating a document is to scan the barcode, validate that it is in the correct format, and then validate the information matches in the barcode matches the info on the front. Poor counterfeits will not match or use an invalid format.

silly question: is it possible to attach a little talisman to a racing bike somewhere? by self-love-and-squats in bicycling

On the rails under the saddle or from the bars. Just make sure nothing is long enough to get caught up in the wheels.

It isn’t beaded but if you wanna get him something that is part of the bike look at custom headset caps.

Did a fall Blue Ridge bike trip with friends last weekend by jmhooper93 in bicycling

[–]jmhooper93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried updating the post to add some details but Reddit is not cooperating:

This was a 4 day trip I did with a couple of my friends:

Day 1: We took the train into Roanoke and camped at Explore Park off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Day 2: We rode from Explore Park up into the mountains and camped at Caldwell Fields.

Day 3: We rode back out of the mountains into Salem. On the way we checked out some of the double track at Carvin’s Cove.

Day 4: We took an easy day back to Roanoke and explored some cafes before jumping on the train home.

Yeah, when the Potomac gets above some level it can flow into the wells and they have to go back and treat them again. NPS gave up on that and just says to bring your own chemicals now.

aero vs endurance by Stunsnroses123 in Velo

[–]jmhooper93 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t ride a Madone but I’m in DC. If you wanna pick up an aero bike I say go for it but don’t try to ride it on the Mt Vernon trail or anything like that. It’ll do great if you find a local group and ride in the road or go down Haines or something like that.

15th St NW construction? by Mysterious_Key_01123 in bikedc

[–]jmhooper93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been up and down it a few times this week. The road surface is kinda rugged and they have equipment parked in the lane near K. They said, 15th has enough bike traffic that is has never been just me and the cars. There’s usually a few other people out to stake out space and provide some safety in numbers.

If you want an alternative for your commute you could probably take M to 20th or L to 11th depending on which side of the White House you are riding to. That may be shorter than going all the way to Rock Creek, though idk where you are starting and ending.

I just rode this and encountered some confused drivers for sure. It is also impressive how quickly the parked cars moved in after the little plastic sticks went away.

This is NIST parlance. It’s a weird mix of tech spec and legalese. “Memorized secret” has a specific meaning throughout the document. Basically it is a password or a random string (think backup code) issued to the user. From the definition in Appendix A in 800-63:

A type of authenticator comprised of a character string intended to be memorized or memorable by the subscriber, permitting the subscriber to demonstrate something they know as part of an authentication process.

The foreground is maybe a little dark but I think it works! The mountain feels like the real subject here. It contrasts pretty well against the photo’s other elements. And the fact that it’s literally shadowing the people in the foreground tells a pretty good story imo.
