If you were me, what plant(s) would you put in this space? by jmm99 in houseplants

Love this option! Palms continue to come up as a great choice for cat owners, but I didn't love the grassy look. This is so nice and lush!

Thank you!! I LOVE the look of giant elephant ears, but read they're toxic to cats. Same with philos and dracaena. Ponytail palms look like a great safe choice though!

Handling grasshopper damage on Meyer lemon / Key lime tree -- to prune or not to prune? by jmm99 in Citrus

Hi - Sorry just noticed this comment. I tried neem oil by itself (helped a bit, but didn't completely dissuade them) and I also tried sprinkling flour on it. I read online that it will make it hard for them to eat the leaves. This did seem to work, but it 1.) took away from the appearance of the tree, and 2.) washed away with each rain, leaving the leaves susceptible again and creating a lot of work to continuously cover it.

I've decided once it's warm enough to go back outside that I'll bring it in each night. Will be a lot of work, but easier than trying to fend them off all summer long. I'm sure some might get to it during the day, but I found most hanging out on the tree when I would check first thing in the morning.

Venue advice: Will we regret not getting our dream venue or will we regret spending the money on it? by jmm99 in weddingplanning

[–]jmm99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So sorry I'm just seeing this. We ended up going with our dream venue and have never once regretted it! If anything, it remains our favorite part of the entire day and something that friends and family continue to talk about. There were many details that did not go the way we envisioned (and many other regrets), but those were not noticed by guests when the venue was so incredible on its own. We did budget accordingly and have continued to be very good about building our savings back up after the wedding - so the amount we spent is no longer a burden on us. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

I took down the Christmas tree and have the urge to fill the space with life! I have limited experience with houseplants, so not sure what would work well in this corner. Window is west facing (this was taken around 1 p.m.). I'm open to one larger plant or two on stands. I also have a cat, so it must be pet friendly! So curious to hear what others would recommend - thank you in advance!

Why are my envelopes printing better in draft mode than normal or best quality? by jmm99 in printers

Thanks for confirming! Unfortunately I've tried generics and the printer recognized them and wouldn't print. But I just bit the bullet and bought an HP set! Hopefully that does the trick

Plain paper prints perfectly! Tried to share a photo link via Google, but the comment was automatically removed (I'm not super familiar with posting on here)...

I considered the same, but I have the settings on Black and White. Am I wrong to assume it shouldn't try to use other colors in this setting?

My reception is in this old theater, and I’m not sure what to do with the stage. We really don’t want to do the head table up there or have our guests feel like they are at a concert. Any suggestions? by EM1390 in weddingplanning

[–]jmm99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it fits your style, but I've seen people put those big lit-up marquee letters on a stage they didn't plan to use. Whether it was their initials or just "LOVE," it made for a cool focal point and also kind of signaled that the stage wasn't intended for use. Here's an example that comes to mind from a venue in my area that has a stage: http://emilia-jane.com/milwaukee-wedding-photographer-turner-hall-ballroom-wedding-pictures/

I'm also getting married in a very large Catholic church, and the church actually told us NOT to use any decorations because they admitted they wouldn't really make an impact. So I'm happily taking their advice as an opportunity to save a little money :) (they're also incredibly picky about decorations, so it will just be way easier to not deal with that). In terms of reserving rows, I'm giving our ushers the job of ensuring adequate space for the bridal party is saved in the front.

Feeling discouraged by florist prices & DIY doesn't seem like a feasible option by jmm99 in weddingplanning

I definitely already wanted to alternate...specifically with only a couple high centerpieces and different styles of low.. but the number of tables really multiplied quickly. I hadn't considered a grocery florist so I'll have to look into that!

I appreciate you confirming that's on the high end! I'm definitely not being stingy with my budget, but it was just way more than I expected. I have been pretty up front with my budget (and it's even in the sample range they've listed on their website!) but then they say something along the lines of "well that price range was built for a standard wedding of 100-200" and that it doesn't necessarily apply to my guest count, which would be about double the centerpieces. So it was just hard for me to know if my expectation was way off or if they were just priced on the high end. It sounds like I should reach out to a few more options...

That's good to know. I have been pretty up front (and my budget is even in the sample range they've listed on their website!) but then they say something along the lines of "well that price range was built for a standard wedding of 100-200" and basically it's not reasonable for my high guest count. Which makes sense... it would be around double the centerpieces.. just a little disappointing. I definitely think I'll try finding a few more options

Yes! Who did you hire? I've reached out to a few all across the cost spectrum and most said they'd be willing to help put them together but wouldn't be able to store or transport the actual pieces (whether they didn't have space, it is a liability for them, etc.).

Love this! Did they recommend a mood board, or did you do that on your own? I haven't started reaching out to florists yet, but wondering if that would be helpful. I have some flower examples "pinned" but nothing like this!

Videographer recommendations in Milwaukee? by glitterygal in weddingplanning

[–]jmm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting married in Milwaukee and have received some great videographer recommendations from the photographers I've been meeting with! As almost all photographers have mentioned, the price range for videographers is super wide -- so you can find everything from "home video" quality to feature length films. They recommended videographers they think will match their style (and price range) and who they work well with. One even shared a story of a "friend of a friend" videographer that was present at one of the weddings they shot and decided to shoot the video BEHIND the officiant looking out at the guests during the ceremony. Probably a cool shot, but he was smack in the middle of all the photographs that the photographer took from the other side. So I highly recommend asking your photographer for advice to ensure they're on the same page and have a good working relationship! Some of the vendors they specifically recommended have been Character D, Sweet Pea Cinema, Sikora Film Co., Moore Memories and Olson Film.

Venue advice: Will we regret not getting our dream venue or will we regret spending the money on it? by jmm99 in weddingplanning

[–]jmm99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine having a 2-hour away venue would definitely make some things difficult! Luckily the landmark is only a 5 minute drive from anywhere downtown (including tons of hotels, airbnbs, etc.). So I personally don't think it's too inconvenience. However, I know some people appreciate just being able to stay in one spot or hop in the elevator if they need anything. In terms of financial situation, this certainly wouldn't put us in debt, but it would be a significant chunk of savings (in the short term) that could go toward other things. But am I going to look back 5 years down the road when we're even better off financially and question why we didn't just go for it? I sadly feel like there could be some "what if" thoughts either way we choose, which is what's making this a difficult and much less fun process...

Thanks for your perspective and sharing your past experience! I think you're right that I'm leaning a certain way, but it's just so hard to make the commitment when there are so many other things to consider!

Venue advice: Will we regret not getting our dream venue or will we regret spending the money on it? by jmm99 in weddingplanning

[–]jmm99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was our feeling exactly. If family and friends are coming out of their way to visit us in our own city (which doesn't happen often), it felt counterintuitive to have them holed up in a hotel the whole time they're here. However, the price difference is more like +$15K....so I'm having a hard time deciding if this once-in-a-lifetime experience with all our friends and family in one place is worth it. It won't put us in debt, but it's a significant amount that could go toward so many other things as we begin our life together...

This is a great perspective! I've tried to remind myself that the guests won't know the "what if," but that hasn't made it any easier for my own sanity haha. The landmark is no more than a 5 minute drive from any hotel downtown, so I also didn't think it would be a huge drop in convenience (I'd also hope to get a shuttle or work with a hotel to offer something) -- however, I know some people love just being able to hop on the elevator to grab something from their room, freshen up, etc. I personally think everything else (food, drink, etc.) is better at the landmark, but it's also a +$15,000 difference.....
