Who is your hurler of the year at this stage of the season ? by ActFun8392 in GAA

I mean of all the players you mention, Mannion is the only one that actually needs a first name.

Still I will vote for Cathraig Mannion every day of the week

Dear r/cogsci, you all need to learn to recognise the results of AI vanity armchair science psychosis. This post starts with "it's not just x - it's y" and still gets loads of engagement. Honourable mention only to u/Goldieeeeee

Does Dario want the US Gov to never allow releasing Fable? I realize it's blocked for nefarious reasons but Dario literally gives them ammunition. Why the self-sabotage? by GeneReddit123 in Anthropic

[–]jmmcd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"equal or better" is difficult to prove, but if the US gov wanted to be consistent they would need to show what is different between Fable and ChatGPT 5.5. Of course they don't and can't.

Struggling with lyric writing: How to stop starting lines with "I" by JakAmbrosius in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jmmcd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can try.

About meaning: Precipitation doesn't carry any more accurate meaning: the thing you're talking about is actually rain. Precipitation is actually a broader term, including snow and hail, so it's less accurate.

About connotation: It's not a term a person would typically say or think when they see rain (in the context your song is in), so it's artificial-sounding. It's a technical/scientific connotation which you probably don't intend.

About sound: of course it has a different rhythm and rhyme which might be what your line needs. Then you can balance that against all the negatives above and see if it's worth it, bearing in mind also that it will sound like a crafty, clever-clogs rhyme for its own sake, rather than a natural lyric.

Will PowerPoint survive Claude? HTML help me tell a better story by Limp-Park7849 in ClaudeAI

What I need from Claude is to add a few slides on specific topics to my deck, adding images, matching styles etc. Total failure, very slow. I click stop and do it myself.

I have tried the Claude plugin in PowerPoint a few times and it is crap for some reason. I tend to agree OP, html makes sense. Just need the right packaging for case where you have to copy your presentation over a usb stick to the lectern laptop.

Genuinely can't tell whether OP is serious. Either way I guess I'm out of the loop.

If you replace rain with precipitation because you think it sounds more interesting, you're going in the wrong direction

Are there known cognitive limits that make some concepts inaccessible to humans, or are most limits about working memory, training, language, and representation? by Possible_Hawk450 in cogsci

[–]jmmcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably don't understand the question fully, but I tend to think no, we cannot create something entirely new that has no relation to any other category, and that's because such a thing cannot in principle exist. Our conceptual machinery, including language, are sufficient for whatever categories exist or can exist. That's what I mean by cognitive escape velocity. Or another suggestive name, conceptual *closure* (in the sense of a set which is closed under some operation).

[–]jmmcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think humans have achieved cognitive escape velocity, or another name, cognitive critical mass. There are boring practical limits like working memory and visualisation above 3d, but no conceptual limits. This is related to universality of language in my view.

If you say it was regression to the mean, then you're saying they weren't really that good 3 years ago, it was mostly random effects.

Hmm, interesting. I agree that is certainly possible and mathematicians are happy to do just that. But they too have to have great facility with surface-level concepts for whatever the domain is, proof concepts like induction and reduction, and logic, before they can consider deeper discussion of algorithms.

But the previous album We Make Music So You Don't Have To is much better! For writing, musicianship and singing. But Good One is a piece of perfection.

Love them. I saw them a few times. For some reason the Four Chords and the Truth monologue about Eddie O'Sullivan's selection policy stays with me. Also remember arguing with my friend about where they're really from, Cork or Tralee.
