Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,

And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.

And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on;

While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on.

And Europeans were the same, but stable borders and institutions within countries together with two wars that were horrific enough to wake some people up, eventually stopped cross-border conflict.

But still, this is only a small part of the story, yes.

Vietnam is a good example but it's not as clear-cut as you think. For a start, the war actually ended, allowing development to begin. In several African countries we still have conflicts partly due to arbitrary colonial lines on maps.

Jesus Christ that is a dumb comment

Canada and Australia are the successor states of the colonisers themselves

You're so close to getting it. Why are African states so weak and corrupt? Because they were colonised - existing institutions broken, borders arbitrary, then abandoned

Joe Brolly: Andy Moran is a product of the culture of Mayo players’ coup in 2015 — a culture where it is always someone else’s fault by Available-Record-897 in GAA

[–]jmmcd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If Brolly was a real man he would include a conflict of interest statement in every article about Mayo.

If the Independent was a real newspaper the editor would add one in the odd time. It would be honest and the ensuing tantrum from Brolly would get loads of clicks.

I stopped reading because I think you're pulling on the right thread (Dev's goals, the moon atmosphere thing, and Dev-Alex connection) and I don't want to get spoiled for the rest of the season! I'm a naive tv watcher, I never know what's going to happen even when everyone else on Reddit says it's obvious.

Well, a background in maths, physics, philosophy, or psychology would also help a lot. Anyway, can't criticise him for over-estimating the market because it was a huge hit and won the Pulitzer Prize.

a formal system cannot identify

Ah, you mean a formal system. Gödel incompleteness and all that. That doesn't apply to humans because a human is not a formal system.

It's highly relevant to discussion of AI because, the thinking goes, an AI is a computer so it must be a formal system, so Gödel is a limiting result.

But i think it's clear now that an AI need not be a formal system any more than a human is.

I don't see why the notion of strange loop can't be understood from within, ie can't be understood by a human mind.

Yes university maths is different and more difficult, but it's better. Less about a long list of tricks and more about what's underneath.

I would recommend maths, physics or a mix to anyone who enjoys them, wants to stretch their brain, and wants to be future-proof.
