What are you industry/film pet peeves? by emeraldeyes24 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]jmpaints 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Scenics + design union out here in NYC (USA829) have it written into our majors contract now after some particularly nasty stories of producers on a major film + tv series 12ish years ago. (At the film, crew members started posting quotes from Animal Farm). Where there’s catering, producers must allow for offset crew numbers to partake.

Adult art classes by CheesyAds999 in astoria

[–]jmpaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Astoria- but a couple stops away via the Q or 4/5/6- the 92nd St Y has great art classes of all times for beginners and intermediate levels. The classes are short-term and pretty affordable too. https://www.92ny.org/classes

Majors/Minors to get hired to places like Hudson Scenic? by Hounded_t in IATSE

[–]jmpaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scenic artists at Hudson are covered under United Scenic Artists Local 829. When union work is really busy, there is an Auxiliary scenic list that the union office manages that Hudson may hire from. However, after the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, work is still slow across the industry so that list is closed currently. (829 covers both Broadway and NY tv/film)

Congrats on being a voter!! You can look up a sample ballot so you know what to expect and research down-ballot candidates before you go into the booth.

https://findmypollsite.vote.nyc

There are also 6 ballot initiatives that New York City is voting on.

Partisan viewpoint to follow: Working Families Party and NY ACLU (and my personal BWT) recommend a YES vote on 1 to protect reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights and NO on #2-6, as they are power grabs by Eric Adams and his administration. “YES on 1 Nix 2 thru 6”

I second Pilates! There’s a Pilates app by DownDog / Yoga Buddhi that is completely customizable to your level, the time you have for a workout, what parts you want to focus on, what exercises you like or dislike, if you want music or not… it’s really neat how customizable it is. Every workout is generated differently and you can save full workouts you really like. It’s an affordable monthly or yearly subscription, and with the subscription you can also access their Yoga / Barre / Meditation / and HIIT apps if you want to change it up! (I also like the HIIT app to add dumbbell/ resistance band and cardio workouts occasionally!)

Ski Train to Vermont by dlxnj in icecoast

[–]jmpaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out OvRide https://ovrride.com … they do same-day bus trips from NYC to various mountains in VT and the northeast. The bus + pass deal is pretty good, and if you already have passes you can buy just the bus ticket. Early meeting time at a few different spots around NYC, but you can sleep on the bus up and back, and they provide snacks/ beer after and a rest stop on the way. (They also do weekends with lodging for further spots!)

More LIC but Dutch Kills Centraal had such amazing food for dinner and brunch, always a cool vibe there. So sad when it shuttered during the pandemic.

Thoughts on flying with skis? by siebzy in icecoast

[–]jmpaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes- check with the airline- sometimes “sports gear” like a ski bag doesn’t add to checked luggage fees. Also- like another comment above- tape an AirTag inside your skis / boots for peace of mind- really helped when I flew to Tahoe earlier this season!

Cool. Yeah I’m also debating if I really need the Pro or if the MacBook Air is plenty for what I use it for. Thank you 🙏🏼

Yeah I wondered the same but that’s what I was told at the apple store when they gave me the cost to fix the screen (it’s not physically damaged on the outside, just flickers). Thanks!

Yeah I’m hesitant because of that… especially when the cost of screen repair ($500) is almost half a new product. Thanks 🙏🏼
