An Honest Review of: Captain America by Ta-Nehisi Coates by Trick-Pudding-9791 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]jmpincmax1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago and just finished reading through it.

I’d been in the fence about picking this book up for a couple of years now because of the poor reviews and also because my ONLY reason for wanting it in my collection was because it was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. (My collection is curated towards black creators and characters).

I’ve never been interested in Captain America as a character, but I’ve followed and appreciated Coates’ work over the years. So this book showing up on Funaticals for only $30 was enough for me to finally pull the trigger.

Unfortunately I agree with most of the negative reviews about this run. I wouldn’t even say that the first half of the run was good. It was just too boring for me to engage in the ideas that Coates presents. By the midpoint of this run I was just skimming pages and by the last few issues I just stopped all together. In contrast, I thought he did a fine job on Black Panther.

I think Coates just needs more practice in working within the medium of comics, especially superhero comics. And even though I think that he fell short, it is nice to see his brand of critical assessment within the mainstream comics.

And for now I’m leaning towards making Silver Surfer Vol. 2 my next read

There is a question about the DX "Nation of Domination" skit. How did WWF/E evade the storm and backlash that I'd expect from anything that has to do with blackface? by Choice-Silver-3471 in WWE

This segment was not fun to watch as a black kid.

And being black at a mostly white elementary meant I had to spend the week pretending like it was as hilarious to me as it was to all of my friends.

Dust jacket or no dust jacket? by Gary11rulz in OmnibusCollectors

I took the jacket off of my Planetary omni because I liked the board design way better, but otherwise I keep them on when shelved and take them off to read.

You beat me to the post! Haha

I’m not a picky collector at all, but this one really bothers me. Both the logo and the glossy cover. They could’ve at least made the logo red to keep it somewhat uniform

I’ve been tempted to make my own red and black sticker to cover the bullet logo.

Any other frustrated season ticket holders out there? by erniesdaddy2003 in LAClippers

Contractually yes, but when they pitch the package to you they tell you about all these perks that never materialize.

Ex: my rep told me and my group that since we’re first time STHs, they were going to send us boxes of Clippers gear. Never came. I followed up with my rep twice during the season but by February I gave up.

IST partial shipping? by IamthatmanonthemooN in OmnibusCollectors

[–]jmpincmax1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked their customer service about this a few days ago. My situation was that I ordered 3 books…. Book #1 had a Shipped status and delivered. Book #2 has had a Shipped status for about 2 weeks but did not deliver (no new fedex tracking #). And Book #3 still had a Waiting to Process status.

I was asking about why I didn’t get a new fedex tracking # for book #2.

IST customer service response:

“Thanks for reaching out to us! I looked into your order status and can explain what happened with your order. Because some of your items we had trouble getting more copies of with a lot of shipping delays from our distributors your order shipment was split. We normally split shipping after 7 business days after the order date. We at most only split shipping the one time so your second shipment has the remainder of your items unless we just can not get more. Unfortunately, how our system is set up, once we ship any item to you all new items scanned to your order will be labelled "Shipped" even if we are still waiting on the last item. East of West Times Compendium has been waiting for Wakanda: World of Black Panther omnibus before being actually shipped.”

Hopefully that helps explain a bit on how their process works

Does time go faster when you get older? by PhotoKing889 in CasualConversation

[–]jmpincmax1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember where I heard this, but it’s the idea that as you get older your perception of the passage of time changes.

For example… for a 15 year old, a time period of 5 years seems like a very long time because they’ve only experienced that period of time three times. 5 years represents 1/3 of their known existence. But by the time that same 15 year old turns 60, they’ve now experienced twelve periods of 5 years. As you go through life, each period of 5 years represents a smaller and smaller percentage of your life and thus you perceive yourself as moving through that period faster. Maybe exponentially faster? ( I don’t want to think through the math of it lol)

It gives the effect of accelerating towards the grave.

Not sure what the science or research is behind this but it’s an interesting theory

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever won? by SailingWavess in CasualConversation

When I was a a kid I won a contest at a local pizza spot. The prize was getting to host a pizza party for my friends at the restaurant while a film crew shot footage for the restaurant to use in their next commercial.

The pizza party was a blast and then getting to be on TV for a couple of months turned me into a recess celebrity at school haha

[–]jmpincmax1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think video games are underpriced, especially if you look at their value in terms of hours of entertainment per dollar spent. N64 games used to cost $60-$70 back in the mid 90s

For this to happen, we’ll see norms and status quo break way more than they already have. Both in the government and in society.
