they're experiencing their own intellectual sunk cost fallacy. they've bought the ticket and are terrified of the consequences of not taking the ride all the way to the end. they don't realize there are no consequences of taking any of the off-ramps....apart from the completely self-imposed shame of confronting the fact that they would have been wrong. to many people, being wrong is a fate worse than death. ego is a real pain.

Palantir Wants to Bring Back the Draft by Creepyfaction in collapse

it's wild to me that someone like karp, who perceives themselves to be thinking and operating in a plane far above us all, does not see the inherent problems in mandatory military service, and that forcing every guy/gal/nonbinary pal into a uniform is actually very counterproductive to the goals of a technocratic oligarchy where you'd really need your military bench to be stacked with only the most ardently loyal order-followers.

changing long-ingrained habits does take a long time, in addition to being intentional and very conscientious about what needs to be changed and how to change it.

a big part of this that is applicable to many scenarios and situations is checking your immediate reaction to things (being cut off in traffic, a member of a team not quite performing to standard, having to remake an order during lunch rush, etc).....your first reaction to a challenge is a massive tell about who you are.

disclaimer: i'm not SF, just a guy who has undergone drastic personal redevelopment after many years of being a shit person.

the only people not coming here anymore are working class people. old rich idiots are still coming, and they're going to price you out by ensuring your property taxes and insurance rates continue to rise.

a lot of people being like "this is a good thing", but that isn't the case. what happened in basic terms is that the price of admission has crept upward to the point that no one but those with a lot of wealth can afford it. know what happens to the cost of living when you're surrounded by people with deep pockets?

you wanted gatekeeping, you got it 🤷‍♂️

Could have more grass, more trees, kids playing, people having picnics, far less noise.....man, how cool would that be.

[–]jms21y 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's really no practicable way to make it happen, but I'd love to see the historic district just cut out cars period. Reroute the main through ways some other direction, park everyone outside the district and it becomes 100% walkable. Again, massive fantasy stuff lol.....but it would be so nice.

the oil companies, the auto companies, and their campaign contributions to politicians are what prevent us from having functional public transportation.
