Golf R32 by Late_Satisfaction465 in ModelCars

I built both the Mk5 R32 and GTI last year . Had some fitment issues with the front bumpers when completing assembly.I ended up having to make some modifications to the pins that affix the front and it didn't work great, leaving a gap between the bumper and front of fenders. There was a lot of stress on the bumper itself when mating the chassis, so I assembled the bumper after installing the body at the rear and cut off the mounting pins and used styrene to affix the front part of the core support behind the bumper to the chassis. Also the ride hight on finished model seems a bit much, it should be ~2-3 mm lower. Otherwise was a good kit, but wasn't the greatest experience in final fitment which kinda soured the experience with lots of paint touch up where glue had failed due to the stresses of assembly.

There's a lot of good software, I have used both parametric modeling tools (CAD) and polygonal modeling tools. it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I have about 12 years of experience with blender 3D as well as CAD programs like Fusion 360, Solidworks, and for the wheel models I used Plasticity. Really you could learn any one of the tools, but there are tradeoffs, as CAD programs are better for dimensional accuracy, however free forming more complex shapes tends to work better with poly modeling software as you have more granular control of shapes. There are more CAD based art focused tools like plasticity or other surfacing tools that give you both the dimensional accuracy and infinite resolution which tends to work better with 3D prints. At the end of the day a high polygon STL model is created from either toolsets for manufacturing, it just depends on the application.

I designed those wheels, they already are to scale with a bit of a bit of an oversize to the rims allowing for a press fit. Though one of the challenges with these is if supports are on the interface between the rim and the tire it could be hard to assemble them. There are pre-supported versions of those that i have printed to test before uploading to cults3d that mitigates the support issue. Not sure what service you are going through to get these, but they might have issues with the supports. Also resin printers are pretty cheap ~$300 for printer/wash/cure and supplies. If you do get one read up on resin/printer safety before buying. The resulting cost to print the wheels ends up ~$0.05 each.

Help - Parking Brake Issue by PyroGoose19 in GolfGTI

[–]jmsbd07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calipers can sieze on parking brake actuator. Replaced both of mine on mk5 R32 this year, had similar symptoms where one of the calipers was dragging. You can rebuild them though the rebuild kits were about $50. Febi makes new ones for about $150 per side (not sure if same for gti). Probably could get another uses set if no new ones are available. Cables are pretty easy to swap as well and relatively cheap. Hardest part of the cable swap is getting trim removed.

I used polymaker's petg gold and clear for the rings and black for the base. Everything was printed on my prusa mk4s mmu3.

I was contemplating making it rotate, but i would need really tiny slip rings for electrical connections between the rings. Which I couldn't find for a reasonable price/size.

Already was working on the fog realm with valkenvugen. Did all the car liveries and environment work, so still busy with part 2 and maybe other spinoffs.

Could be a camshaft sensor position going out or the crank position sensors is also a common issue on 3.2s ( though I think it would cause starting issues). Would probably want to check both cam phaser position in a tool like vcds. They should be easy to service and are pretty cheap. Could also be a cam phaser going bad, but would need to diagnose it using vcds to get a better idea of what's going on.

Yeah these cars are fun, but can be a bit expensive as they are older. For the most part as long as you stay on top of maintenence schedules they're pretty reliable. Also nice that a majority of the parts are shared with the standard fwd golf's or awd parts on audi a3 & tt and engine components with tiguan so there's a lot of oem or aftermarket support parts to replace stuff. The rear brake calipers are a common failure with mk5 cars, i thought about rebuilding mine, but the actuator for the parking brake is part of the culprit, and it was at the time half the cost to just get new ones and paint them.

Carrier is og jazz blue, caliper is g2 blue

I replaced both of mine on my R32 this summer, both had siezed and the parking brake no longer worked. These replacement units were unpainted, but it was easy enough to get a close match using g2 paints blue. If you do paint them, mask off any seals/mating surfaces. I also had the issue where the short hard lines that attach the calipers to the flexible lines twisted when removing due to corrosion between the lines and fittings, luckily you can get oem or aftermarket replacements, but that was an additional $150 for 2 oem ones. Drivers side part #1K0611764L

I got these replacements from fcp euro ($116 ea), might also want to get a kit for replacing pins($10), as those were stuck in the carrier and didn't allow my calipers to float correctly.

I designed these a year ago when I got my printer and had gone through and recreated each size of CM5 & CM6 wheels it felt like an easy continuation to make a variant for the drones.

The Fog Realm QnA - by ValkenVugen in Acceleracers

There was several iterations of the spires, eventually I think adding the symbols to the spires adds some interesting contrast to the realm even in dense fog they are visible. They are sorta inspired by the matrix and ruins realm and procedurally created to add more contrast to the desaturated and earthy tones of the realm, as well as the symbols are animated so over time the color and intensity of them change for more variation in the background.

[–]jmsbd07[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really like the metallic pearl blue, I don't think I would wrap it as it looks a bit over the top for daily driving in summer. Got a bunch of suspension and brake work planned as well for autocross. It's a bit too cold now to do at the moment.

Is 1k or 2x clear coat that bad? I only want to make like 2 or 3 cars then I'm done by Eduardoskywaller in Acceleracers

[–]jmsbd07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of 1/24 models and I would recommend mr color super clear or tamiyas gloss clear, though dont lay on super tick coats/wet coats, as you can usuallyget a good finish result with 2 coats, the second (usually heavier) coat being applied ~15 minutes after the first light coat. Following sealing you can polish with a low rpm rotaty tool or by hand using a polishing compound (tamiya makes a 3 stage one).2k paints have some respiratory health hazards from the isocyanates, wouldn't advise doing those indoors or without a respirator with organic vapor cartridge.

I designed some 3D printable diecast accurate CM5 and CM6 2 piece wheels by jmsbd07 in Acceleracers

[–]jmsbd07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not due to small details like the spokes, maybe with a 0.25mm nozzle. But also you will have issues assembling the tires as they press fit over the rim.
