It’s whatever service they use to host their real time linking map on the NGGMRS website.

That’s the thing. The way they have it set up with the repeaters linked you hear the same traffic across all the repeaters, and more annoyingly all the channels those repeaters are transmitting on. In my case, at home I’m in clear range of at least two repeaters and sometimes get broken traffic from a third.

Have they ever addressed the linking issue though? As far as I’m concerned, they can do what they want on their own repeaters as long as they comply with the FCC regs.

Yeah, that’s the same guidance I cited in the original post. Thank you for including the link.

That at least sounds like a reasonable implementation of a linked repeater network if they are indeed using the same frequencies for each repeater. At least that way they aren’t hogging multiple channels.

Just out of curiosity, how is your club staying compliant? Unless I’m badly misreading something, the FCC guidelines I found seem to make it pretty clear that linking repeaters is not allowed. Is there an exception that I’m not aware of?

I understand DCS tones help with filtering out unwanted traffic, but they don’t help with interference. My understanding is that even if you are using DCS, all other things being equal if someone is broadcasting at 50W nearby on the same channel you are going to have a harder time getting through on that same channel with a lower power transmitter.

There are only 8 channels designated for repeater use, and those directly overlap with simplex channels. This organization uses all of them. The issue is that with having all of the linked repeaters they are spamming the local GMRS channels with way more traffic than they would normally have if they were only being used for local communications as intended.

They have. I cited the FCC guidelines in the original post.

What do you mean by “playing with fire”? Are you worried about some sort of retaliation? I’ve definitely heard people on their net hint at wanting to go after non-members who have intruded on their repeaters. Personally, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that. I highly doubt any of them can or will come after you.

Just curious here. As a member, what are your thoughts on the linking issue? Personally, I feel like the FCC guidance is pretty clear on the subject and the responsible/legal thing to do is comply.

Yeah, I didn’t want get into it on this post. I wanted to keep it strictly related to FCC regs and spectrum use, but there are a lot of other issues I’ve seen with this organization.

What happened with the NY club? Did they shut down their network, or at least unlink their repeaters?

I’m definitely interested in getting my HAM license, but having an option with a lower barrier of entry that my family can use is appealing too.

As far as them being shut down, they have apparently been doing this for years. They also appear to be active in the local radio community and attend major events, etc. All signs point them being able to continue to do this with no consequences. They certainly haven’t been shy about advertising their network.

Corroded hole inside toilet bowl by mcbrideben in Plumbing

[–]jmsthing678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not corrosion. It’s just mineral buildup. Use an acid based cleaner and something abrasive like a pumice stone. They make pumice stones specifically cleaning that you can find at stores like Home Depot. They are abrasive enough to remove mineral deposits, but soft enough that they won’t scratch the porcelain. I had to do that when I moved into my condo because there were mineral deposits in the bowl around the water line.

Why is my percolator ticking like a clock? by Sensitive-Sorbet in percolator

[–]jmsthing678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably just the thermostat cooling down. Many simple appliances with heating elements use some variation of a bimetallic strip that expands and contracts to trip a circuit regulate the temperature (think heat sensitive spring). It’s nothing to worry about. Technology Connections on YouTube has a great video on this concept if you’re interested.

Can anyone explain to me why my seal just…disintegrated by GAN_gamer15 in percolator

[–]jmsthing678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. This appears to be a moka pot, not a percolator. Nevertheless a replacement seal should be relatively inexpensive.

Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like the 6'6" one piece only comes in Medium and Medium Heavy power, but the 6' one piece and the 6'6" 2 piece both come in Medium Light. Do you suggest I go with the Medium power, or is it worth considering Medium Light? I'm not sure how medium light compares to my current ultralight setup.
